Films of the '80s: 1984

You can post a list of anywhere between 5 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is July 24th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1984, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

A good year for films. 1985 In comparision seems pretty weak and cheesy, though.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

1985 has Ran and Vagabond, but beyond that, I agree it's looking pretty weak. (Although I need to see Purple Rose of Cairo which I hear is very underrated.)

I suppose I should watch Amadeus in addition to the other ones I mentioned. The only reason I was avoiding it is that I know the entire plot already, and I'm aware it's not entirely accurate.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

Brazil and Back To The Future as well. Also, the best part of the Up series by Michael Apted, 28 Up, is from 1985.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

My favorite movie (Back to the Future) is from '85.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

Any chance of any brat pack movies making an appearance here? What would a top 80s list be without the breakfast club or pretty in pink? An acclaimed music movies list - that's what

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

I do plan to vote for The Breakfast Club in 1985.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

I'm not a fan of Brat Pack movies.

The Breakfast club has a small chance of making my 85 list, depending on the overall quality of the other movies.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

Paris, Texas
Once Upon A Time In America
Blood Simple
This Is Spinal Tap (15 pts)
The Terminator (5 pts)
Nausicaa (1 pt)

Unless Klassenverhaltnisse or Love Streams suddenly get votes I don't think I need to look for anything else to add.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

My own list:

1. Once Upon a Time in America (Sergio Leone)
2. The Terminator (James Cameron)
3. Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders)
4. This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner)
5. Stop Making Sense (Jonathan Demme)
6. Ghost Busters (Ivan Reitman)
7. Amadeus (Milos Forman)
8. Blood Simple (Ethan Coen / Joel Coen)
9. Balkan Spy (Dusan Kovacevic / Bozidar 'Bota' Nikolic)
10. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (Steven Spielberg)

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

The results for this decade consistently have the winners end up with more total points than in the '90s; we do have a voter more in most years, but I think there's also more of an established set of classics. Also, a record 9 films in the top 10 have at least 1 #1 vote.

#. Title (Director) - Points/Voters/#1s
1. Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders) - 382/12/2
2. This Is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner) - 301/12/1
3. Blood Simple (Joel Coen) - 285/12/1
4. Stop Making Sense (Jonathan Demme) - 267/9/1
5. Once Upon A Time In America (Sergio Leone) - 257/8/2
6. Amadeus (Milos Forman) - 255/10/2
7. The Terminator (James Cameron) - 215/10/1
8. Stranger Than Paradise (Jim Jarmusch) - 184/7/1
9. Ghost Busters (Ivan Reitman) - 141/7//0
10. Repo Man (Alex Cox) - 137/6//1

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

I'm surprised Once Upon A Time In America didn't finish first or second.

Anyone know a good way to see Balkan Spy? It doesn't seem to be on Netflix.

Re: Films of the '80s: 1984

I used a torrent to get it, seems rather rare. I think I'd change my list to have it at #6 instead, but since I was the only one to vote for it, it doesn't really matter.
