Re: Movies of the 00s: RESULTS

Excellent job BillAddama, really enjoyed the presentation.

This poll really highlighted my complete lack of cinematic knowledge; something I intend to rectify. I've purchased several of the listed movies recently and so far I have been completely blown away by the stunning 'Let the Right One In', a truly remarkable movie

Re: Movies of the 00s: RESULTS

You know what we should do?

After we get through the 70s, 80s, and 90s polls we should have a short bracket competition with the top 8 from each poll.

We normally can't do bracket competitions with movies because people don't have time to watch all the movies. In this case, people have almost two years to watch 32 films.

Good idea, I'm in.

Re: Movies of the 00s: RESULTS

This isn't the reason I wanted to get a factor analysis tool, but I decided to test it on this data. So here's what I came up with: 6 factors, that explain 63% of the variance.

Factor 1 seems to be mostly relationship to the overall list.

Factor 1 highest 10:
Mulholland Drive
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
No Country For Old Men
Cidade de Deus
There Will Be Blood
Amelie
The Lives Of Others
Donnie Darko
Children Of Men
Talk To Her

Lowest 10:
Borat
The Bourne Identity
The Royal Tenenbaums
Juno
Thank You For Smoking
Million Dollar Baby
A.I.
O Brother Where Art Thou
Eastern Promises
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

Factor 1 highest ballots:
Gillingham
BillAdama
Romain

Lowest:
Greg
John
nj

Factor 2 seems to most be a 'LOTR factor' for the positive scores, and a 'Social issue drama/Ang Lee' factor in the negative scores.

Factor 2 highest 10:
No Country For Old Men
Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers
Wall-E
Ghost World
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King
Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring
Yi Yi
Le Meglio Gioventu

Le Gout Des Autres
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Up

Factor 2 highest ballots:
Greg

Factor 3 seems to be a Coen factor in the positive scores and a Fincher factor in the negative scores.

Factor 3 highest 10:
No Country For Old Men
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring
Kill Bill, Vol 1
Let The Right One In
Mulholland Drive
Punch Drunk Love

Factor 3 lowest 10:

Le Meglio Gioventu
Zodiac
In The Mood For Love
Traffic

Factor 3 highest ballots:
nj
Petri
Guy

Lowest ballots:
Stephan
Antonious
Harold Wexler

Beyond factor 3 it gets harder to explain. Positive factor 4 seems to combine LOTR and anti-mainstream anti-authority films, and negative factor 4 seems to have dark-themed mainstream films and popular indie comedies. 5 and 6 don't seem to have much of any running trends.

Factor 4 highest 10:
Mulholland Drive
O Brother Where Art Thou
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
Sideways
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
Ghost World
