Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

A great year.

Albums
1. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
2. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
3. Patti Smith - Horses
4. David Bowie - Young Americans
5. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
6. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffity
7. Eno - Another Green World
8. Bob Marley - Live!
9. Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey
10. Parliament - Mothership Connection

I wonder who'll take first this year; Bruce or Bob. Both albums are incredible, but I've got to give the nod to Bruce. Born to Run might be a little less consistently good as Blood on the Tracks, but the two singles are a deal breaker.

Songs
1. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
2. Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
3. Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue
4. David Bowie - Fame
5. Bob Dylan - Hurricane
6. Patti Smith - Gloria
7. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
8. David Bowie - Young Americans
9. Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
10. Bob Dylan - Idiot Wind

Not too much to say. The year is a little weak on singles, but the album cuts are brilliant.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Here are the lyrics to my no. 1 song entry :

STEELY DAN - DR WU

Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow
All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me Doctor

Don't seem right
I've been strung out here all night
I've been waiting for the taste
You said you'd bring to me
Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day
I went searching for the song
You used to sing to me
Katy lies
You could see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise
When I saw you

Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
She is lovely yes she's sly
And you're an ordinary guy
Has she finally got to you
Can you hear me Doctor

The lyrics MAY be about a man coming to peace with himself. And that true love lies within.

Steely Dan are interresting psychologically! On the next couple of albums they took rock as far as possible when it comes to one aspect of narcissism, lifelessness...even if the songs "Aja" or "Gaucho" or "Third World Man" (those songs all have non-western themes) did the best it could to prevent that. "Here At The Western World" is another song with a similar theme. Anyway, they feel like outsiders, looking in through the window of western life or life in general...just like me. Took a while to find out.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Songs

I had a really tough time ranking 3-5.

1.) Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
2.) Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
3.) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
4.) Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue
5.) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
6.) Bob Dylan - Hurricane
7.) Led Zeppelin - Trampled Under Foot
8.) Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
9.) Kiss - Rock 'n' Roll All Nite
10.) Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
11.) Bruce Springsteen - 10th Avenue Freezeout
12.) David Bowie - Young Americans
13.) The Eagles - One of These Nights
14.) War - Low Rider
15.) Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion
16.) Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
17.) Jonathan Richmond - Roadrunner
18.) Aerosmith - Walk This Way
19.) Donna Summer - Love to Love You Babe
20.) Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone

Fun Fact: M.I.A. samples "Roadrunner" in "Bambo Banga", and I think that's the only reason I like that song.

Talking 'bout Roadrunner, Jonathan Richman released his best known (and best) song on single in 1975, but it is a significantly different version than the more familiar Roadrunner version you'll find on the Modern Lovers album (1976-the one with the rolling organ sound). Therefore, I think it is legitimate that Roadrunner can be included in the '75 poll as well as the '76 poll.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Albums:

1. Dylan - Blood on the tracks
2. Neil Young - Zuma
3. Springsteen - Born to run
4. Patti Smith - Horses

8. Tom Waits – Nighthawks at the Diner
9. Willie Nelson - Red headed stranger
10. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
11. Richard & Linda Thompson – Pour Down like Silver

Honorable mention: Basement Tapes, but honestly CBS left too many excellent tracks off it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Mahmoud Ahmeds "Era Mèla Mèla" appears on a certain number of lists. It is my #3 song of 1975 (you will easily guess the first 2 if you know me)

For those who haven't given their lists yet, consider that beautiful piece of Ethiopian music : a real outsider from the third world with chances to get to the final round

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Only 3 days left to vote, I'm on time this month so you won't have any additional time to vote !

7 albums seems already qualified but 8 albums are still fighting for the 3 places left.
Votes are much more spread for songs so everything seems still possible (even though 4 songs seems already out of reachà

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Great year for Spanish music. In fact, a great year for Spain in general. Franco died and democracy came at last.

ALBUMS:

1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Born to Run" (#18 in my all-time list)
2. PINK FLOYD "Wish You Were Here" (#59)
3. NEIL YOUNG "Tonight's the Night"
4. BOB DYLAN "Blood on the Tracks"
5. PATTI SMITH "Horses"
6. BRIAN ENO "Another Green World"
7. QUEEN "A Night at the Opera"
8. LED ZEPPELIN "Physical Graffiti"
9. THE ROLLING STONES "Metamorphosis" *
10. LLUÍS LLACH "Viatge a Itaca"
11. SISA "Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol"
12. CAMEL "The Snow Goose"
13. BOB DYLAN & THE BAND "The Basement Tapes"
14. NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "Zuma"
15. THE WHO "The Who By Numbers"
16. PAUL SIMON "Still Crazy After All These Years"
17. JONI MITCHELL "The Hissing of Summer Lawns"
18. PARLIAMENT "Mothership Connection"
19. EARTH, WIND & FIRE "That’s the Way of the World"
20. DAVID BOWIE "Young Americans"

22. LOLE Y MANUEL "Nuevo día"
23. FLEETWOOD MAC "Fleetwood Mac"
24. EMMYLOU HARRIS "Pieces of the Sky"
25. BRIAN ENO "Discreet Music"

* I don’t know why everyone considers this a compilation and albums like “The Basement tapes” or “VU” not. All the songs in “Metamorphosis” were demos for other artists or outtakes previously unreleased. And it’s a beloved album for me, the very first one Stones albums I bought when I was 12-years old (the ones who know the album can imagine that I got a “wrong” first perception of what the Stones were).

SONGS:

1. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Born to Run" (#5 in my all-time list)
2. SISA "Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol" (#76)
3. NEIL YOUNG "Tired Eyes" (#89)

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: ELVIS PRESLEY "The Sun Collection" (#19 in my all-time list)

My favourite Spanish song of 1975: Sisa's "Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol"

As I told in my comments for 1974, the nova cançó (“new song”) was a music movement raised in Catalonia that used the Catalan tongue instead the Castilian and had a strong protest content during the dark years of Franco’s dictatorship. But Jaume Sisa was always an outsider within that movement. His alignment was more with stateless individualism than with left-wing nationalism. In Vázquez Montalbán words, Sisa’s work supposed “a precarious affirmation of a fragile me amidst an insufficient we” in times when “nobody design paradises on earth but individual shelters”. And his music background was different too, half underground (he was part of the seminal band Música Dispersa that released an experimental album in 1970 completely ignored at the time and now a minor cult album) and half popular (with influences of pre-rock styles like cabaret, traditional folk and Latin styles like bolero). He defined himself his particular and bizarre style as “cabaret galáctic” (no need to translate this, isn’t it?). “Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol” (“Any Night the Sun Could Rise”), his second album, released in 1975 a few months before the dictator’s death, is still considered his masterpiece.
The title song is a kind of lullaby, a children’s song, in which all of us are invited to a party whose guests are the childhood heroes of the singer. Cradled by a sweet arrangement of piano, violin, triangle and vocals (and champagne) the guests are entering one by one in Sisa’s party. You can meet there guests coming from literature (Grimm and Perrault classic characters like Cinderella but also terrifying characters as Count Dracula or Moby Dick!), from the movies (Disney characters -of course- like Bambi or Peter Pan), from the TV (Popeye, Tom & Jerry) or from the comics (being American -Snoopy-, European –Obelix- or Spanish –Capitán Trueno-). But let me point to the most likable of these characters, the Caganer (shitter). During the Christmas period on every Spanish home the families make a representation with figures of Jesus birth that is called Belén (nativity scene, literally Bethlehem). And among the figures of the shepherds that come to adore Jesus there was the Caganer, a squatting child having a shit that, no need to say it, it was the favourite of every child. Another interesting character on the dark side is l’home del sac (Bogeyman), a fictional character used by the parents as a threat (if you’re not good the bogeyman will come to take you), but it seems that Sisa considered him as another child hero too.
Sisa invites us to his home (with the gentle anarchist touch “if there’s anybody’s homes”), a place where “time doesn’t matter, neither space”, where “any night the sun could rise”. And the result is a song that more than 30 years from its release still floats as a bubble ahead of time or space, “turning sadness into smoke”.

QUALSEVOL NIT POT SORTIR EL SOL
Composer and performer: SISA
First release: 1975 ("Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol"album)
Length: 6’50”

Fa una nit clara i tranquil•la,

Els convidats van arribant

de colors i de perfums.

Heus aquí la Blancaneus,
en Pulgarcito, els Tres Porquets,
el gos Snoopy i el seu secretari Emili
i en Simbad,

¡Oh, benvinguts! Passeu, passeu,
de les tristors en farem fum.
Que casa meva es casa vostra,
si es que hi ha cases d’algú.

Hola Jaimito i Doña Urraca,
en Carpanta i Barba Azul,
Frankenstein i l’Home Llop,
el Comte Dràcula i Tarzan,
la mona Xita i Peter Pan.

La senyoreta Marieta
de l’Ull Viu ve amb un soldat,
els Reis d’Orient, Papa Noel,
el Pato Donald i en Pasqual,
la Pepa Maca i Superman.

¡Oh, benvinguts! Passeu, passeu,
de les tristors en farem fum.
Que casa meva es casa vostra,
si es que hi ha cases d’algú.

Bona nit senyor King Kong,
senyor Astérix i en Taxi Key,

En Pinotxo ve amb la Monyos
agafada del bracet.
Hi ha la dona que ven globus,
la familia Ulises
i el Capitán Trueno en patinet.

¡Oh, benvinguts! Passeu, passeu,
de les tristors en farem fum.
Que casa meva es casa vostra,
si es que hi ha cases d’algú.

I a les dotze han arribat
la Fada Bona i Ventafocs,
en Tom i Jerry,
la Bruixa Calixta,
Bambi i Moby Dick
i l’Emperadriu Sissi.

Mortadelo i Filemón
i Guillem Brown i Guillem Tell,
la Caputxeta Vermelleta,
el LLop Ferotge i el Caganer,
en Cocoliso i en Popeye.

¡Oh, benvinguts! Passeu, passeu,
ara ja no hi falta ningú.
O potser sí, ja me n’adono
que tan sols
hi faltes tu…
També pots venir si vols.
T’esperem, hi ha lloc per tots.
El temps no conta, ni l’espai…
Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol.

ANY NIGHT THE SUN COULD RISE

It’s a night calm and clear,
there’s the moon that shines.
The guests are coming
and fill the house
with colours and perfumes.

Here they are, Snow White,
Tom Thumb, the Three Little Pigs,
Snoopy Dog and his secretary Woodstock
and Sinbad,
Ali Baba and Gulliver.

Oh, welcome! Come in, come in,
we will turn sadness into smoke.
My home is your home,
if there’s anybody’s homes.

Hello Jaimito and Doña Urraca,
Carpanta and Bluebeard,
Frankenstein and the Wolf Man,
the Count Dracula and Tarzan,
Cheetah and Peter Pan.

Lady Marieta de l’Ull Viu
comes with a soldier,
the Three Kings, Santa Claus,
Donald Duck and Pasqual,
Pepa Maca and Superman.

Oh, welcome! Come in, come in,
we will turn sadness into smoke.
My home is your home,
if there’s anybody’s homes.

Good evening, Mr. King Kong,
Mr. Asterix and Taxi Key,
Roberto Alcázar and Pedrín,
the Bogeyman and Patufet,
Mr. Charlot, Mr. Obelix.

Pinocchio comes with La Monyos
holding his arm.
There’s the woman who sells balloons,
the Ulises Family
and the Captain Trueno in a scooter.

Oh, welcome! Come in, come in,
we will turn sadness into smoke.
My home is your home,
if there’s anybody’s homes.

And at twelve they have arrived
the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella,
Tom and Jerry,
Calixta Witch,
Bambi and Moby Dick,
and Sissi the Empress.

Mortadelo and Filemón
and William Brown and William Tell,
Little Red Ridding Hood,
the Big Bad Wolf and the Caganer,
Swee’ Pea and Popeye.

Oh, welcome! Come in, come in,
now there’s no one left.
Or maybe yes, I’ve just noticed
that the only one that’s left
it’s you…
You can come also if you want to.
We’ll wait for you, there’s room for everyone.
Time doesn’t matter, neither space…
Any night the sun could rise.

Fortunately this time there’s a (fabulous) You Tube amateur video-clip of the song. Please please please see (and listen) to it…

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1975

Biggest regrets: Not getting around to the Miles and Kate and Anna McGarrigle albums, though there are probably other very worthy albums that I should have gotten to as well. It's astonishing how many great albums there were in '75 and so few--unless I just don't know them yet--in '76. But maybe next month's listening will change my mind about '76. But now, on to celebrating '75:

1) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
2) Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
3) Roxy Music - Siren
4) Patti Smith - Horses
5) Steely Dan - Katy Lied
6) Tony Bennett and Bill Evans - The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album
7) Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
8) Nils Lofgren - Nils Lofgren
9) Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
10) Neil Young - Zuma
11) Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years
12) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
13) Joni Mitchell - Hissing of the Summer Lawns
14) Gary Stewart - Out of Hand
15) Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
16) Bob Dylan and the Band - Basement Tapes
17) Eno - Another Green World
18) Parliament - Mothership Connection
19) Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
20) Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert

And I regret not having room in my top 20 for such albums as Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here (which I prefer to Dark Side of the Moon), John Fogerty's self-titled, the Spinners' Pick of the Litter (which would be near the top of my list if all the songs were anywhere near as good as the underrated "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)"), and Lynyrd Skynyrd's better-than-most-people-say Nuthin' Fancy.

I'm not sure if you can buy Caganers outside the Christmas period, but maybe. Anyway looking for images on Internet I've found that modernity came to Caganers world too. Today you can find images of Obama or The Pope as caganers.
