nobody else quite stirs me up like the truckers. and re: late for the sky - it's just one of those albums. it spoke to me a great deal in high school, and it still does. browne's lyrics are disarmingly honest and lindley's slide guitar - don't even get me started. i'm assuming you've seen taxi driver? when trav bickle kicks over the tv and the title track starts playing? magic.
I'm not sure who you're responding to regarding Late for the Sky, but I agree--a remarkable album. I have seen Taxi Driver and the song is used to great effect.
Since no one is actually doing bands, I'll present my T20 artists, based on work from 1989-2009. Interestingly enough, the allowance of 89 albums allow Pixies and MBV to slip in.

My 1 and 2 are pretty obvious, but whatever. Maybe I have R.E.M a bit too low, but I'm not as huge a fan of their mainstream stuff.

I think the original poster wanted to limit it to bands with their *first* release post-89. I would have definitely had both Pixies and MBV in if it was based on any albums released after 89. Maybe Tom Waits, Nick Cave.

And that's my list. Some of these artists released albums BEFORE 1989, but I figured I'd only count them if they got famous after 1989. So R.E.M., and the Pixies don't count, because they achieved success BEFORE 1989, but bands like Pulp, Flaming Lips, and Red Hot Chili Peppers count because their music they're remembered for came after 1989.
Mine is more of a "here are 20 of my favorite artists who debuted in the past 20 years."
