Yeah, I was ready to get going with this too, though no rush on 1973, I'm willing to wait.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

I’ve noticed some people put up a great effort listening to stuff they don’t know already before putting together their monthly list. I’ve not been doing much in this department myself, but remembering that Robert Wyatt’s Rock Bottom received great acclaim in a not-so-distant AM poll, I’ve gotten hold of the thing and look forward to immersing myself in it (with luck, I may get around to King Crimson’s Red as well before the month is over).

If anyone is similarly inclined, I have one suggestion: If you’re able to get hold of Bruce Cockburn’s Salt, Sun and Time (and if you’re the kind who likes e.g. Nick Drake), do give it a listen.

One more thing : Contrary to what RYM says, Confusion by Fela Kuti is a 1975 album.

So if anybody intends to pick this album, please put it in your 1975 list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

A rather weak year, compared to the previous (and the following), and despite the number one (which is my all time favourite). Or maybe it is that I didn't listen to the right albums. Randy Newman, Jackson Browne and Jorge Ben sounded very good but I had no time for them. Too bad.

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE BEACH BOYS "Endless Summer"

My favourite Spanish song of 1974: Lluís Llach's "Que tinguem sort"

If we talk about Spanish music during the 70s it's inevitable to talk about politics. Spain was living for almost 40 years under the ferocious yoke of Franco's dictatorship, isolated by the European democratic political regimes (but not by the USA!) and suffering a tremendous cultural delay and lack of basic freedoms. The young musicians at that time could not ignore these facts, but the most visceral opposition to Franco did not come from pop or rock bands but from the singer-songwriters. They were then included into the Nova Cançó (New Song) movement, but inside this pack we can find roughly two main subtypes of these political singers. One, exemplified by Raimon, with a straight combative message at the forefront somehow hiding the musical content and the second one, exemplified by Lluís Llach, with a strong political content too but as part of a more complete set of lyrical themes and with a careful attention to the musical aspects. He added to the common ground of his peers (the anti-fascism and the French chanson influences) the American singer-songwriters introspective attitude and a vast array of music influences, from Nino Rota to Mahalia Jackson, from Mikis Theodorakis to Sergey Prokofiev, with a firm commitment with the Mediterranean sounds. Llach’s "intimate anthems" about love and fight plucked the heart strings of the young audience at the time. But unfairly after Franco's death his legacy tends to be overlooked, probably because of his refusal of singing in Spanish and his strong compromise with left Catalonian nationalism (not precisely a popular option right now in Madrid). Well, not in Catalonia where he's considered almost as a myth.
I've selected a love song from the excellent 1974 album "I si canto trist" ("If I Sing Sadly") because I can't think about another song that showcases so well love and compromise. He told to the loved one that "if you come with me / don't ask for a plain road / nor silver stars / nor a tomorrow full of promises / just a bit of luck / and that life gives us a long long way". He advances here what it will the main theme of his next album "Viatge a Itaca" ("Journey to Itaca", 1975), life as a long road where the important thing is not the final destination but the road itself, the struggle to get by. And as I told before, it's impossible not to talk about politics. It may not seem as a first glance but lines like "in spite of the fog we must walk" didn't left any space for doubt for the young people of the 70s, Llach was referring to Franco's regime in a subtle but firm way. Musically the arrangement is spare, with Llach's voice and piano backed barely by guitar, upright bass and drums, with a (beautiful) harmony vocal by Llach himself. The strong point here is the songwriting, like Jordi Bianciotto for Rockdelux defined as a "fortunate melodic line in crescendo" for this "love song that uses dialogue to raise open and defiant vital horizons".

QUE TINGUEM SORT
Composer and performer: LLUÍS LLACH
First release: 1974 ("I si canto trist"album)
Length: 3’55”

i així robar
temps al temps de un rellotge aturat,
que tinguem sort
i que trobem el que ens va mancar ahir.

I així pren,
i així pren tot el fruit que et pugui donar
el camí que, a poc a poc, escrius per demà.
Que demà,
que demà mancarà el fruit de cada pas;
per això, malgrat la boira, cal caminar.

Si véns amb mi
no demanis un camí planer,
ni estels d'argent
ni un demà ple de promeses, sol
un poc de sort
i que la vida ens doni un camí ben llarg.

I així pren,
i així pren tot el fruit que et pugui donar
el camí que, a poc a poc, escrius per demà.
Que demà,
que demà mancarà el fruit de cada pas;
per això, malgrat la boira, cal caminar.

MAY WE HAVE LUCK

If you say goodbye
I want a day clean and clear,
that any bird
breaks the harmony of its chant,
may you have luck
and may you find what you have missed in me.

If you say I want you
may the sun makes the day much longer,
so we can steal
time from the time of a frozen clock,
may we have luck
and may we find what we have missed yesterday.

And so, take,
and so take the fruit it could give you
the path that you are slowly writing for tomorrow.
Because tomorrow,
because tomorrow it will lack the fruit of every step;
that’s why, in spite of the fog, we must walk.

If you come with me
don't ask for a plain road,
nor silver stars
nor a tomorrow full of promises, just
a bit of luck
and that life gives us a long long road.

And so, take,
and so take the fruit it could give you
the road that you are slowly writing for tomorrow.
Because tomorrow,
because tomorrow it will lack the fruit of every step;
that’s because we must walk despite the fog.

The only You Tube link I've found from the mid 70s is incomplete and badly synchronized. You may prefer to listen to the studio version with English subtitles (with a translation quite different than mine).

And please let me add my second Spanish song of the year. I always considered it a guilty pleasure but seeing at #6 in RYM charts (really #3 if we exclude the 1973 songs) now I consider it at least a massive guilty pleasure. That's Jeanette singing with her angel face and her delicious American accent "Por qué te vas" ("Why Are You Leaving?").

It could be that Rock'n'Roll Animal ought to be up there, but I haven't heard it in years and don't trust my memory; I wish I'd gotten around to relistening. Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom seems to be impossible to get in the US for less than $30, so I've still not heard it. Those are probably my two biggest 1974 regrets. That and not kissing Autumn Tampa at my 8th grade dance in May 1974.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Ack! Somehow I forgot about Heart of Saturday Night! Ah well, I think it just misses my top 20 anyway, though on some other day it could well replace Clapton on my list.

Btw, I'll check again, but I believe Rock Bottom is not available on iTunes in the US. If I'm write, Nicolas, you may be getting an e-mail from me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

I got my copy of Rock Bottom on Amazon used for, if I recall, $14.

Copies are out there of most albums, you just gotta be patient. I got Lucinda Williams s/t for like $25, and my dad used a bootleg connection of his to get me a Blue Afternoon/Starsailor import combo for like $15.

Now, everyone download Phaedra and vote for it before the vote closes!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

I just checked Amazon and there is a used copy of Rock Bottom for a reasonable price, so even though it's too late for me to include it in my list, I think I'll pick it up. If it's Nicolas' all-time favorite, I think there's an awfully good chance I'll love it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

well it's different from the rootsy music I usually love

Don't be afraid of being lost for the first listens, for it is a very different album, almost alien

The vocal performance is divine

well it's different from the rootsy music I usually love

I got to agree with everything Nicolas has said about the album. I was actually listening to it a couple of hours ago on a flight back from Paris of all places (Is it always that hot Nicolas?)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

no Beans, it's not always that hot, but it can be in the summer... hotter than Ireland, for sure

Talking about the weather, not of rock Bottom

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

I'm late as usual, I was in London this week-end to see Blur in Hyde Park (the first gig, Thursday) and it was awesome ! I'll try to send the results tomorrow or Tuesday !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Here are the results of the albums poll :

1) Robert Wyatt – Rock Bottom
2) Joni Mitchell – Court And Spark
3) Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic
4) Neil Young – On The Beach
5) Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
6) Big Star - Radio City
7) King Crimson – Red
8) Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel
9) Roxy Music – Country Life
10) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Natty Dread

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

1. Rock Bottom

Cool.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Cool - only 2 I don't have. I might actually be able to get the whole final top 100 this time...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

With the exception of Natty Dred and Rock Bottom, I think every one of those albums may very well end up in my bottom 30.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Its great to see Natty Dread make it in, although by the skin of its teeth I,m guessing. Had it not made the top 10, I think there might have been a real possabilty that we could have a decade top 100 without any Bob Marley albums. I,m basing that comment on the fact that the remaining 2 albums most likely to recieve votes (Live! and Exodus) are in tougher years, particularly Exodus.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Maybe, just maybe, Kaya will get in. It's not as good as Exodus, but hey, 78 isn't exactly 77.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

a best of the '70s without Bob would have been absurd
let's vote for the live! album next year

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

And the songs poll results :

1 - Bob Marley & the Wailers - No Woman, No Cry
2 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
3 - David Bowie - Rebel Rebel
4 - Big Star - September Gurls
5 - Robert Wyatt – Sea Song
6 - Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough for The Both of Us
7 - King Crimson – Starless
8 - Steely Dan - Rikki Don't Lose That Number
9 - Joni Mitchell – Free Man In Paris
10 - Millie Jackson - If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right

Quite a surprising top 10 with 2 songs not included in the AM3000 (Starless and If Loving You Is Wrong...), making the top 10 with only 4 votes (among 21 voters), twice less votes than the unfortunate Autobahn, 11th with 7 less points than Millie Jackson.

Those are the only 10 songs to have more than 100 points (Autobahn finishing with 99 points !), the votes are really spread for that year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

Maybe we spoke to soon about the demise of Bob then. 2 songs and an album isn't bad for a half way point I guess.

Bowie clocks in his seventh song. Once Heroes comes in he'll have eight. Could Heroes be our song of the decade? Regardless, Bowie is sure to dominate out polls.

The sting of #2 and 3 was quickly assuaged by the glee of 4-10.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1974

The only one I don't have is Country Life. I do however have Roxy Music, Stranded, Siren, Avalon, For Your Pleasure.

I'm not sure I feel like shelling out for a 6th album by the same band while I'm trying to amass albums from the moderate albums poll.

Unless it's one of those albums which a band made in a completely different sound from their other albums like Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. Is it one of those?

Well, no; it's got pretty much the same sleek-but-propulsive aesthetic as the albums on either side of it. But if you have all the other early Roxy albums, and you like them, you absolutely need COUNTRY LIFE. If nothing else, it has "Out of the Blue", the last minute or so of which - thanks to an amazing phased electric-violin solo by Eddie Jobson and some of Paul Thompson's most explosive drumming - is just about as exciting as rock has ever gotten, in my humble opinion.

Well, excellent news in fact. I’m glad of having contributed for the high (and deserved) position of Starless. And we must blame mainly for the success of Millie Jackson to our beloved nj (well, and Charlie Driggs too). I can see that I’m not the only one thinking: “Wow, I must listen to what netjade put on number one…”
