Which non-default top 100 albums do you recommend?

I would like some recommendations of albums that are not generically considered among the 100 greatest of all time, as I seek to expand my musical collection and horizon. I'll listen to anything. I would like to avoid country, ska, poppy music, and easy listening, but I'm up for anything else, including jazz, classical and good rap

Re: Which non-default top 100 albums do you recommend?

My (and probably many others' on this forum) choice would be "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. It's my favorite album, but it's also relatively well-known for an "underground" albums of sorts. As for something a little less acclaimed than that, The National's "Boxer" and "Alligator" are great as well.

Just take a look at these polls we did:

There are a lot of albums in there that are not the "industry standard" so to speak.

A couple of really great albums that sorta seem to slip through the cracks but are generally regarded as classics are "Odessey and Oracle" by the Zombies and "Village Green Preservation Society" by the Kinks.

Re: Which non-default top 100 albums do you recommend?

I have Illmatic by Nas, which is quite good. I also own Out to Lunch by Eric Dolphy but it has not grown on me yet. I've never been able to get into the Red Hot Chili Peppers either.
