Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Because we've clearly gotten to the point where a lot of people can't even vote, this time we're voting with a 200 album block instead of a 100 album. In these blocks however, the top ten will qualify instead of the top five.

Since more people will probably be able to fill out full ballots this round, the time frame will go back up to a week, now ending on Monday.

My ballot:

The Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day
The Kinks - Lola
Live - Throwing Copper (10)
Tool - Lateralus (10)
Jackson Browne - For Everyman (5)
Sleater-Kinney - Call The Doctor (5)
Madonna - Madonna (5)
Smashing Pumpkins - Gish (1)
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World (1)
The Band - Stage Fright (1)

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

1) Radiator - Super Furry Animals -- My second favorite album from the most underrated band of all time.

2) Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. - Bruce Springsteen -- My favorite Bruce album. I had this above Radiator in the 2008 album poll. I really like them both, and they are so different, it's hard to figure out how to rank them.

3) Terror Twilight - Pavement -- I've noticed that in the past number of years, a number of songs on this album have gotten some play in pop culture. I never thought a Malkmus song, particularly one called "Spit on a Stranger," would get played underneath a romantic scene on a network sitcom... but there it was. I like this a fair amount better than Wowee Zowee.

4) Wowee Zowee - Pavement -- But I still like this mess of an album pretty well.

5) Central Reservation - Beth Orton -- When I see all these interchangeable female singer songwriters that seem to pop up every ten minutes on VH1 in the past two years, I think a fair number of them could take a cue from Beth Orton on how to retain some individuality and potency...

6) Call the Doctor - Sleater-Kinney -- ...Or if they really had any cajones they'd take a cue from these gals. (Or from PJ Harvey, who only had one misfire of an album (Uh Huh Her), which will not make this list.)

7) Jesus Christ Superstar - Original Concept Recording -- I suspect I could justify this vote until I'm blue in the face, and none of you would buy it. I'll just say in my defense: a) there is still a hidden part of me that is a big musical theater geek; b) I bow to no one in my hatred for all that A.L. Webber did after this album; and c) just be glad I didn't vote for Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down, because a perverse part of me was tempted to do so.

8) Volume 1 - Traveling Wilburys - Another fun album.

9) Zooropa - U2

10) s/t - Madonna

John
So can we pick 20 now?

I'd rather avoid having 20 albums given points, just because that number might be intimidating to people who haven't heard as many albums as you. People might not vote because they feel obligated to have a full list.

Maybe I can say any ties are broken with 11th-20th place inclusions, or something like that.

The toughest thing in running this game is balancing the fact that some people have really heard almost everything and some people haven't heard much lower down on the list.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Standings so far:

Narcissus & pals: 74
Good places to kick: 68
Indie icons: 63
Board darlings: 59
Same indie icons: 58
Southern rock shredders: 50
Girl rock trio: 47
Xenomorphic pop icon: 44
The date of the apocalype: 40
Hurling metal: 37

A couple dozen albums currently within one first place vote of the top ten.

Rune: Did you mean Show Your Bones? You said Fever To Tell.

sonofsam: A lot of the ones you voted for, I haven't heard them, but I've heard other albums by the same group.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Are Harold Wexler, sonofsamiam and netjade the only ones who have heard Da Capo by Love or is it just so much worse than Forever Changes? I haven't heard it. Forever Changes was my #15 (or something like that) last time we had the best of all time album poll so maybe it's time to finally get that cd (da capo).

So far I'm the only one who has voted Sung Tongs. Come on! The breakthrough album (and my favourite) of one of the most influental band of the decade.

I noticed that I forgot to vote Neu! 75. It should be in my top 10. If it's possble let's put in into #6 (I hope it doesn't harm chance of Radiator to the next round).

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

I thought that "Da Capo" was pretty mediocre. I love "Forever Changes" (it's in my top 100 albums), but I don't have the same love for "Da Capo." It just seems less interesting and less melodic to me.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

whoa.. less melodic?? only in your dreams, young chordato... no, seriously, try a decent lop ear on it, pop elton, it definitely won't fail you

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

You only reduced Radiator's point total by 1. You reduced The Coral's by 6. Don't worry about Radiator.

Vote ends tomorrow midnight board time. It should be noted that the previous count did not include Netjade's vote.

Votes are more spread out this round, so a single vote is the most likely yet to have a huge impact on the results.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

1. Pet Shop Boys – Introspective
2. Beth Orton – Central Reservation
3. Jill Scott – Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

If the second half of DA CAPO had actual songs instead of an aimless 18-minute jam, I would have placed it at #1 for this round. As it is, the songs that comprise the first half are uniformly brilliant and more than justify the high ranking I did give it.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

1. Procol Harum: Procol Harum/A Whiter Shade of Pale, 1967
2. Fine Young Cannibals: The Raw and the Cooked, 1989

4. Love: Da Capo, 1967

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Assuming nobody's trying to sneak in an entry in the last 20 minutes, here are the results.

19 votes, exactly 100 albums voted on.

1. U2 - Zooropa (85/8/1)
2. Pavement - Wowee Zowee (73/5/2)
3. The Shins - Oh, Inverted World (68/6/1)
3. Super Furry Animals - Radiator (68/5/1)
5. Pavement - Terror Twighlight (58/4/0)
6. The Millennium - Begin (55/3/2)
7. The Drive By Truckers - Decoration Day (50/3/2)
8. Sleater-Kinney - Call The Doctor (47/5/0)
9. Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecat (45/3/0)
10. Madonna - Madonna (44/4/0)
--
Love - Da Capo (43/3/0)
Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ (41/3/0)
The Coral - The Coral (38/3/1)
Live - Throwing Copper (38/4/0)
The Cure - Wish (35/3/0)
Pet Shop Boys - Introspective (35/2/0)

At this point it's more than safe to say the wild card standings won't change any, so here are the final wild card standings, three of which will make the elimination round:

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One (#588, 105 pts)
Pulp - This Is Hardcore (#659, 102 pts)
PJ Harvey - White Chalk (#914, 101 pts)
Beck - Midnite Vultures (#617, 101 pts)
The Cure - Seventeen Seconds (#648, 98 pts)
The Kinks - Face To Face (#586, 98 pts)
TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes (#972, 96 pts)
Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antarctica (#653, 94 pts)
Beach Boys - Sunflower (#908, 93 pts)
Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man (#991, 93 pts)

Voting for that round you will only be able to vote for 3 (Because only 3 move on), and points will be 10/7/5. I'm ruling because it came before the scoring change, all tiebreakers go to Yo La Tengo.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Usually I'm not one to get irritated by these results (or I try not to show it), but it pained me greatly to see the rather mediocre Terror Twilight just edge out one of the great sunshine pop albums ever (Begin).

All you Beach Boys fans, and I know there are many, you owe it to yourselves to check that album out.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Don't despair, son. Ten albums qualified from this batch.

"Begin" is one of the albums that I'm really interested in but haven't heard yet. If it had been available at Spotify I would definitely have given it a few spins during the last week. I'll definitely get it somehow for the elimination round.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

I just heard "Begin" for the first time yesterday. I would need some more listens to have it break my top 10 for this bracket.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1601-1800)

Begin is something I intend to buy next time I see it in the store. (At least, I don't think it's one of those albums rare enough that I won't eventually find it cheap used. Not like freaking Starsailor which is $75 used on Amazon.)

I don't think Pavement was ever *not* going to make the top 10. I think it's great that albums like Begin make it in too that fewer people have heard.

The albums I myself am most interested in are the ones not so many people have heard but everyone who has heard puts it right at their top.
