Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Same rules as before.

Vote for up to ten albums ranked 1001-1100 on AM. Maximum points you can give are 20-17-15-13-11-10-9-8-7-6. You can give fewer points, but you can't redistribute points.

Top five point getters move onto the elimination round. You have until next Tuesday midnight board time to submit a ballot.

I actually have 28 albums to choose from for this round, more than last round, but only a few I really like. A few of my favorites from the last few years, though.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Based on several people's comments, this already seems to be a most owned albums poll rather than a most loved albums poll. As I don't think that was the purpose, this bothers me a bit. How do you feel about only giving points to our top 5 albums in the coming polls?

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

I've been able to come with 10 albums I really like everytime so far, in fact, I've had to make cuts everytime. So I guess I'd be for sticking with 10.

Why are people voting for one Animal Collective album and not the other? Don't be afraid to voice your support for both Animal Collective albums! Where's Kevin?

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

How far down the list does game last? I was looking at 1801-2000 and I still can definitely find 10 albums that I like in that range. I don't consider all of my top 10's to be great albums but they are all good albums that I still listen to once in awhile.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Kevin has probably passed out from over excitement after seeing Merriweather make the Clash magazine list. Just kidding.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

I agree that, maybe for the entirety of this, the results may have ended up being "most owned" results. Not trying to be judgmental, as I'm not sure how to avoid this. Maybe only by scoring Top 5's?

Anyway, here's my Top 20 from this group. Top 2 are both in my All-Time Top 30; quality between each 100 has stayed relative stable IMO.

[01] Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes
[02] Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
[03] Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures
[04] Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at the Star Club
[05] Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Only scoring top 5 is one idea. Another is going back to the original top-heavy scoring scheme.

I'd be happy to hear other suggestions. First, a little non-binding straw poll to see how people feel.

A) Switch to only top 5
B) Switch back to 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1
C) No change
D) Other idea

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Since it seems I made more counting errors in the 901-1000 poll, here are some changes:

Hold Steady is in, PJ Harvey is out.

Wild card leaderboard:
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One 105
Pulp - This Is Hardcore 102
PJ Harvey - White Chalk 101
Beck - Midnite Vultures 101
The Cure - Seventeen Seconds 98
The Kinks - Face To Face 98
TV On The Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes 96
Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antarctica 94
Beach Boys - Sunflower 93
Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man 93

D) Top five: 15,12,10,8,6

Score 20 points with the number 1, with 1 point and the number 10, it makes little sense. One point is almost the same as 0 points. That is, a rate almost equal to that album you like an album that you hate. In addition, the number 1 you give a 20 times greater than the number 10. I do not seem fair.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

The problem with this poll was that the farther down the list you go the harder it was going to be be for people to participate with the same degree of ease as it was at the beginning. Why not keep the scoring system the same (20,17 15...) but expand the voting groups. For the albums between 1001 and 2000 vote for groups of 200 (after we reach 1200) and once 2000 is reached vote for groups of 250. I think that by expanding the number of albums it will reduce the likelyhood that the poll is just a most owned contast and it will hopefully not have too much of an impact on the wildcard list.

I'm generally 20 times more passionate about my #1 selection than my #10 selection. There's a few albums I love, then a bunch of albums I only like.

And next time you say something like 'It understands what I mean', I'm going to stop even reading your posts. It's fine to disagree with me, but keep it civil.

I like the suggestion about expanding the window to 200. Of course then, we'd have to find a new way to finish at a power of 2.

500-1200 at 100s + 1200-2000 at 200s + 2000-3000 at 250s = 5 x (7 + 4 + 4) = 75.

I suppose we could finish at 81 and go by powers of 3. Or find other ways to get it below 64.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

eh...i'm having a hard enough time narrowing it down to 10 as it is...doubling the number of albums to choose from is gonna make my head swim

so yeah, C, let's stick with what we're doing...i've been kinda disappointed that the winners are leaning heavily towards the recent, but whatever, that's just my taste...if people haven't heard enough albums for a particular set, they can just list fewer albums, right?

and i don't think otisredding was being uncivil, i think he was just asking if you understood what he meant

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

And next time you say something like 'It understands what I mean', I'm going to stop even reading your posts. It's fine to disagree with me, but keep it civil.

I don't think he did that on purpose. otis probably uses a translator on some website and that's what came out.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

If that's the case I apologize. I've just noticed a continuing tone in his posts. He seems really rude and impatient when he doesn't agree with the scoring methods I'm using.

It seems not many people want to reduce the number of albums voted on to 5 because there are a lot of people on this board who really have heard almost everything on the chart. But, people are also noticing that albums more people own have too big an advantage.

In the 1100-1200 thread I'll hold a vote between keeping things as is, going back to the original scoring method, and expanding the window to greater than 100.

There really are good albums all the way down. The 2800-2900 block has three of my top 200.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

There's no clear domination in this block like there was in the previous block. Here's the scores of the leaders:

118
92
89
79
75
-
71
70
(9 more with at least 55)

This is also the first block where two of the current top five are albums I've never heard of.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

That sounds fine, Bill. I'm going to vote for the original scoring method. I actually think it's better than my suggestion to vote for 5 albums. I just didn't want to suggest something that we had already voted against.

Otisredding
D) Top five: 15,12,10,8,6

Otis, now I understand your view on this, that you compare the points for #10 with the albums you hate. I had never thought about it that way, but rather that the points for #10 should not be much higher than the points for #11 (i.e. just above 0).

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Yeah, after all this I think it's just best to continue in the same way -- otherwise there are inconsistencies, it gets confusing, etc. Hopefully for those that are truly trying to find diamonds in the rough, the top several of specific user lists can help point in new directions. Apologies if I helped derail anything!

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

I can't really decide what to go with for scoring. I guess I'm for keeping it as it is. By its very nature, this was going to be a top heavy game, and those early albums are likely to blow the later ones out when we get around to brackets. That's fine though... the nature of the game.

I'm not making any sense. Whatever everyone else wants is fine with em.

Okay. Now I'll vote.

1. De La Soul Is Dead - De La Soul
2. Tigermilk - Belle and Sebastian
3. The Crane Wife - The Decemberists
4. Music of My Mind - Stevie Wonder
5. Rooty - Basement Jaxx
6. Perfect From Now On - Built to Spill (I like two other albums of theirs much better, when do those come up?)
7. Mad Dogs and Englishmen - Joe Cocker
8. Trompe Le Monde - Pixies
9. True Blue - Madonna
10. Dream of the Blue Turtles - Sting

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Honorio.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Wow, a French guy trying to explain english grammar in spanish... my spanish is bad, I will have to train a lot in Benicassim !

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Ok Nassim. Thank you.

Gracias Nassim.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

I didn't interpret this as being "most owned" because that WOULD greatly shrink the # of contenders for me. I own around 3000 CDs and probably another 400 or so albums (vinyl) but that doesn't mean that all of what I own is on these lists. If I had to guess, I'd bet I probably only actually OWN 500-600 of the top 3000. That doesn't mean I haven't HEARD a big chunk of them...but I don't have enough $$ to own everything I like. For the record, on my last top 10 list I only actually own 4 of them (and neither of the 2 honorable mentions).

I'd like to stick with the original premise..but if we're gonna tinker, I'd rather go with "make each group 200" over "only 5 albums" or some variety of adjusting the point spread for each list.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Results:

1. Decemberists - The Crane Wife (133/11/1)
2. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam (92/7/1)
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell (89/7/1)
4. Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk (82/6/1)
5. Jerry Lee Lewis - Live At The Star Club (79/5/2)

Runners up:

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (75/5/2)
Tindersticks - Tindersticks (71/5/2)
Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall (70/7/0)
Animal Collective - Feels (68/5/2)
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me (65/5/1)

No change to the wild card leaders.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Sorry, Otis, but I’m late for the translation. During 20th April I was on my way back from holidays (a wonderful “viaggio in Italia”). Anyway Nassim did an excellent job!! My (humble) opinion is that maybe Bill was not only angry for the mistake (the pejorative “it” was unintentional as you stated) but for your intention on changing AGAIN his rules.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (1001-1100)

Thank you very much, Honorio

I apologize to BillAdama. I assure you that was not my intention to insult or annoy. As for the scoring system, I proposed the other because BillAdama said we could do other sugerenicas. I remember:

A) Switch to only top 5
B) Switch back to 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1
C) No change
