womack's across 110th st. is listed under 1973 on AM

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

but i think you're right, fred...the movie definitely came out in '72, and it looks like so did the soundtrack

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Is "The Modern Lovers" a 1972 (recorded) oder 1976 (released) album?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Yes. Looks like 1972. 16th of December...earliest release date or single date is a matter of taste imo. But what do you do when a song is released later on as a single or in a different version? Ref to last years Gil Scott-Heron - Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Across 110th street will be changed to 1972 in the next update (I don't know how you want to handle it here). The Modern Lovers should be regarded as a 1976 album IMO.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Charlie. I believe we go after release dates. Joy Division - Dead Souls was recorded one year, 1979 and released as a single 1980. Like many releases. JR & ML is quite extreme when it comes to period between recording and release. He didn't get a contract til later, the sucker (JR) :)

For future reference... The Modern Lovers' "I'm Straight" was released on CD reissues of The Modern Lovers' album. I can't find out from wikipedia when the song was recorded, but should I just throw that song into the 1976 list? I know I'm going to need some more quality music to fill up that year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Pretty much every year from 1967-1975 is a great year in general. 1972 is no exception.

One thing I don't understand is why Harvest is so highly rated among Neil Young albums. It's not without it's gems, but I find it one of the least inspired of his efforts. Compared to Gold Rush, Tonight's the Night, On The Beach and Rust Never Sleeps, I just find it kinda boring. Perhaps the most commercial album he ever released.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

1975 is ok, but CHEEZY. I propose a de-cheese filter when we arrive at 75...no wonder punk broke out next year...

I believe 1972 marked a great change in the music world. Exile on Main St. marked the last great album of rock era, and David Bowie started a new era all together with Ziggy Stardust. Lou and Stevie both made great albums, but I feel like too much of their weight lies within the strength of their singles. Machine Head is the best hard rock album not by Led Zeppelin, and I enjoy but am not overly enthusiastic about the other albums on the list.

Songs
1. Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
2. Stevie Wonder - Superstition
3. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
4. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
5. David Bowie - Starman
6. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
7. David Bowie - Suffrgette City
8. David Bowie - Rock and Roll Suicide
9. The Rolling Stones - Tumbling Dice
10. Deep Purple - Highway Star
11. Stevie Wonder - You Are the Sunshine of my Live
12. Elton John - Rocket Man
13. Elvis Presley - Burning Love
14. Lou Reed - Satelite of Love
15. David Bowie - Five Years

I'm surprised Walk on the Wild Side isn't getting more love. The song is so amazing, cliche bassline or not.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Keep in mind my biases when looking at this:
1) I tend to dislike double albums...they tend to be full of "filler" in my opinion.
2) It takes a lot of "time" in my ears before I can really judge an album accurately. Therefore, some of these I haven't heard all that often are still being assessed, i.e. "Exile" and "Ziggy".

1) Bread “Baby I’m-a Want You”
2) Steely Dan “Can’t Buy a Thrill”
3) Paul Simon “Paul Simon”
4) Elton John “Honky Chateau”
5) Neil Young “Harvest”
6) David Bowie “Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”
7) War “The World is a Ghetto”
8) Al Green “I’m Still in Love with You”
9) The Eagles “The Eagles”
10) Michael Nesmith “And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’”

HONORABLE MENTION

Rolling Stones “Exile on Main Street”
Todd Rundgren “Something/Anything?”
Stevie Wonder “Music of my Mind”
Al green “Let’s Stay Together”

Still working on cutting my songs down from 83 to a usable number...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Since no one has questioned it,I assume the inclusion of 'The Harder They Come' is fine?

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: JIMMY CLIFF "The Harder They Come" (in AMG, RYM and AM is not listed as a compilation, but I don't know why)

My favourite Spanish song of 1972: Jordi Soler's

Before talking about Liebeslied please let me seize the opportunity of exposing my own (little) theory about the four different types of music that could include all the music in the world:
a) %%bbCodeItem_1%%. Main feature: sheet music. The importance here relies in the composer. The musicians are "only" allowed to play exactly the music the composer wrote, they can't change a single note and only slightly modify the intensity and tempo (the composer even noted "forte" or "adagio" too).
b) %%bbCodeItem_2%%. Main feature: stage. The importance here relies in the actual performance that is never exactly the same. It can be included here the music based on improvisation (jazz and avant-garde) that only not tries to reproduce written music but not even the performance of the recording sessions. The jazz musicians usually base their performances in a standard melody or in a chord pattern but the main body of their music are the improvised solos.
c) %%bbCodeItem_3%%. Main feature: record. The importance here relies in the artist and the product (single, album) that one can actually buy. The sound, the arrangements and the vocal performance determine even the sub-classification. Of course there are covers too, with a "freedom" of reinterpretation intermediate between the complete of the jazz artists and the absent of the classical ones. 90% of the AM list can be filed under this group, including rock, vocal or rhythm and blues.
d) %%bbCodeItem_4%%. Main feature: oral tradition. The importance here relies in the ground, the traditions of a country that are transmitted from parents to children. I'm not talking about the singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar, I'm talking about real roots-music like flamenco, where the musicians don't play an actual "song" but they aren't really improvising too because they follow strict patterns, like the chord sequence that the tocaor plays or the couplets of popular poetry that the cantaor sings. Many of the so-called "world music" can be filed under this group.
Of course many musicians have build bridges between these four styles (well, not that many, think about it), but no one has been as equidistant as Jordi ‘Toti’ Soler. Toti had a classical music education (a), his father was a classical guitarist and director of an orchestra composed by doctors-musicians, but like many other young men at the time his first music experiences were in pop (c). He was part of bands like Pic-Nic (a sunshine pop band lead by sweet Jeanette) and Om (a prog-rock band that backed Pau Riba in the groundbreaking "Dioptria" album). But in the middle of this pop period Toti's father insisted to adapt musically some poems by some notorious Catalonian poets with the only release of a single with "Petita festa" ("Little Feast") in 1968. With Toti immersed in works with Pau Riba and Om his father feared of this work remaining unreleased and insisted in recording it again, with the result of the album "Liebeslied" (German for "Love Song"), a delicate work only for guitar and voice recorded in only one session. After the release of this album in 1972 as a debt with the past, he moved away releasing since then only instrumental works based on his mastery with the guitar. In 1973 he became more and more interested in flamenco (d), taking lessons from Diego el Gastor and releasing albums with a strong flamenco influence as "El gat blanc" ("The White Cat", 1973) or "Lonely Fire" (1979). During the 70s he also teamed with Jordi Sabatés approaching to jazz and avant-garde (b) and with folk-singer Ovidi Montllor on many albums (this fruitful team delivered masterpieces like "04/02/42" in 1980). After his particular journey through the desert during the 80s (all the ex-hippies like him were severely punished during the yuppies decade) he created his very particular style during the 90s and 00s with albums that mixed tightly and easily the apparently disparate four styles that I previously mentioned, always with his (deeply Mediterranean) unique sound.

LIEBESLIED
Composers: Joan Vinyoli - Jordi Soler
Performer: JORDI SOLER
First release: 1972 ("Liebeslied"album)
Length: 1’55”

LIEBESLIED

Solitude floating around me,
you must listen a complaint at night,
awake silently like a star.
Never the sky was so distant,
but suddenly so near, so near…

No escape from my heart, no escape,
round and round outside at night.
Maybe hers sing like that too
and has mine so near, so near...

I've done a you-tube video selecting 4 songs representative of the deep involvement of Toti into the four styles: a) classical (“Dona’m”) b) jazz (“La mariposa de la muerte”, edited) c) pop (“Liebeslied”) d) folk (“Lonely Fire”). Please take a look at it, it supposed quite a lot of work for me.

Yeah,I was wondering about that. But should it disqualify the album?

Re: My favourite Spanish song of 1972: Jordi Soler's

Honorio: I like your classification, but I think it's worth noting that lately a lot of folk and jazz sounds are getting released within the 'pop' sphere.

'Indie' or 'Hipster' folks in the last four or five years are basically people who like listening to pop music but want it to sound like everything else.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

I'm sorry that only the top 20 count. I've never bothered listing more than 20--what's the point, I thought--but there were so many good albums in '72--maybe not as many great ones as '70 and '71, but a very large number of very good to almost great ones--that I just can't stop at 20.

Albums:

1) Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything?
2) Randy Newman - Sail Away
3) Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill
4) Paul Simon - Paul Simon
5) Original Soundtrack - The Harder They Come
6) Roxy Music - Roxy Music
7) Big Star - #1 Record
8) Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment
9) Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St
10) Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
11) David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
12) Nick Drake - Pink Moon
13) Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
14) Al Green - I'm Still in Love with You
15) Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
16) Keith Jarrett - Expectations
17) Joni Mitchell - For the Roses
18) Miles Davis - On the Corner
19) O'Jays - Back Stabbers
20) Al Green - Let's Stay Together
21) Ornette Coleman - Skies of America
22) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
23) Deep Purple - Machine Head
24) Archie Shepp - Attica Blues
25) Neil Young - Harvest
26) Lou Reed - Transformer

And there are several others, were I to get to know them better, that are probably worthy of being up there. It's been great getting (re)acquainted with these albums.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Grrr, now the order of the posts is messed up again. Nassim, please don't forget the recent posted lists by me, Vgrd, SuperFurry and maybe others as well.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

With much persuasion and repeated listening these pieces of work are making their way up among my favourite tunes.

Not counting Georgie's coming (?) list these are my discoveries from 1972:

Curtis Mayfield - Little Child Runnin' Wild (a sleeper of mine)
D.R. Hooker - Forge Your Own Chains (definitive Hooker song)
Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye (have avoided this one)
Ben Jorge - Taj Mahal - Fio Maravilha - Pais Tropical (do all brazilians sound this self sufficient? :) )
Syreeta/Stevie Wonder - To Know You Is To Love You (tireless song)
Matching Mole - O Caroline (sentimental. best line in rock belongs to the group Silver Jews, though: "sentimental as a cat's grave". song unknown)
Popol Vuh - Kyrie (calm)
Ornette Coleman - Skies of America (there really is someting about that sky)
Fred Åkerström - Jag ger dig min morgon (off course, a swedish classic that stand repeated listening)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Okay, so first here is the list of the voters for songs, just to check if I have not forgotten anybody (given that the topics is not completely upside down)

Alex D, brose, Charlie Driggs, Chris, Fred, Greg, Greg Rumpff, Harold Wexler, Henrik, Honorio, John, Jonah, Michel, Midaso, Miguel, Mindrocker, Moonbeam, Nassim, netjade, Nick, nicolas, Otisredding, pop elton, Rocky Raccoon, Schwah, sonofsamiam, SR, Stephan, VanillaFire1000, Vgrd

And here are the results :

1 - Stevie Wonder - Superstition
2 - Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
3 - David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
4 - Big Star - Thirteen
5 - Lou Reed - Perfect Day
6 - David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
7 - Temptations, The - Papa Was A Rolling Stone
8 - David Bowie - Starman
9 - Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years
10 - Rolling Stones, The - Rocks Off

Random fact of the month : Lady Stardust and Star are the only two songs not getting points in Ziggy Stardust, but Exile on Main Street has even more song ranked with 13 songs (upon 18).

And the songs that almost made the cut, all from less to one #1 vote to the top 10 :

Bobby Womack – Across 110th Street
Neil Young - Heart of Gold
Rolling Stones, The - Tumbling Dice
David Bowie - Suffragette City
Elton John - Rocket Man

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Anyone want to take bets on how many songs Bowie will have in the top 100? He's at 5 now, and I wouldn't be surprised if he makes double digits.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

And yet 'Heroes' would be the only sure-fire one left. Maybe one of 'Young Americans','Fame' or 'Sound + Vision'. I'll guess 7.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Midaso
And yet 'Heroes' would be the only sure-fire one left. Maybe one of 'Young Americans','Fame' or 'Sound + Vision'. I'll guess 7.

Add two: 9 (not counting Pop collaboration).

Still believe the most powerful Bowie song will break through in this poll. He has a few real good covers that deserves mentioning as well.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

I think Rebel Rebel and the Jean Genie could also be contenders. Sound + Vision is good but 1977 might just be too tough of a year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Station to Station might make it ('76 is a leaner year).

Sad that Curtis couldn't break the songs Top 10 here -- gotta be some vote-splitting in this case...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Too bad that Across 110th Street couldn't make it to the top 10. The song has for some reason been forgotten by the critics so a revenge here would have been in place.

Nassim, do you have an idea of when the results from the albums poll will be up? And I'd gladly post the spreadsheets of the 1971 and 1972 polls on the web, if you have them.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

And the results for albums :

1 - David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
2 - Rolling Stones, The - Exile On Main Street
3 - Lou Reed - Transformer
4 - Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
5 - Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
6 - Neil Young - Harvest
7 - Nick Drake - Pink Moon
8 - Roxy Music - Roxy Music
9 - Todd Rundgrenn - Something/Anything
10 - Big Star - #1 Record

Highest ranked album not in the top 10 : Original Soundtrack - The Harder They Come (14th of the poll)
Lowest ranked album in the top 10 : Big Star - #1 Record (#16 on AM)
Highest ranked album with no vote : Chick Corea - Return to Forever (#30 on AM)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

spreadsheet please (i'm very curious)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

I've sent them to Henrik, I guess it should not belong before you can see them !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Spreadsheet!

Sorry it took me so long.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1972

Wow, that's a positively crushing win for Bowie. I expected Ziggy to top Exile, but not by that large of a margain.
