Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

The qualifiers last round were:
Beck - Sea Change
The Beatles - Help!
Elliot Smith - XO
The Beatles - Let It Be

There was a 5th place tie between The Cure - Seventeen Seconds and Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent, The E Street Shuffle. In addition to your ten favorite albums ranked 701-800, vote for one of those.

The scoring method proposed by Otisredding, 20-17-15-13-11-10-9-8-7-6 won out in a close vote 14-11.

I vote Seventeen Seconds, and here is my ballot:

Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards
My Morning Jacket - Z
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
Lucinda Williams - Lucinda Williams
Echo and the Bunnymen - Crocodiles
The Go Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

In the case of ties, wouldn't it make sense to have the tied song get at automatic bid to the wild-card slot? I don't know if for "seeding" the winners we'll need to have a tie breaker, but if we do I'll vote for Seventeen Seconds, since it's the album I've listened to.

1. The Cars - The Cars
2. Beck - Mutations
3. Board of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children
4. Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
5. The KLF - The White Room
6. N.E.R.D. - In Search Of...
7. Horace Silver - Song For My Father
8. Devenandra Barnhart - Rejoicing In The Hands
9. System of a Down - Toxicity
10. At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command

Only 10 albums in this range that I've heard all the way through.

1. The Blue Nile - Hats
2. Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear
3. Burial - Untrue
4. Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

7. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son
8. The O'Jays - Back Stabbers

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Giving an automatic wild card bid for tied albums could be a problem, because what if it happens in the 2901-3000 block, and that nudges more deserving albums out?

I haven't quite figured out the wild card system yet. Some ideas I've been tossing around:
-3 highest point getters that aren't in top five
-Top X (1-5) from each group have an additional voting round at the end
-Top X (10-50) point getters have additional voting round at the end
-I have been considering an automatic bid for Yo La Tengo, because it would have made it with the scoring system that won.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Bill ! As I told you few days ago Yo La Tengo should have made the cut with both systems but you counted Stephan's ballot twice.

6. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
7. Cat Power - You Are Free
8. My Morning Jacket - Z

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

1) The Beach Boys “The Beach Boys Today!”

10) N.E.R.D. “In Search Of”

Honorable mention:

Beck “Mutations”
Soft Cell “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret”

And my tiebreaker vote goes to The Cure SEVENTEEN SECONDS.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

This was the "easiest" one for me so far since I only had 15 contenders to start with. Haven't heard a lot of the albums in this range yet.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Hmm…my choices aren’t doing so well so far.

From the last batch, I’ll stick with E Street Shuffle.

701-800:

1. R.E.M., Lifes Rich Pageant (there are days when I think this is their best album)
2. Laurie Anderson, Big Science
3. Marvin Gaye, Here My Dear
4. Midnight Oil, Diesel and Dust
5. Tom Waits, Orphans: Brawlers Bawlers and Bastards
6. Bo Diddley, s/t
7. Wire, 154
8. Charles Mingus, Pithecanthropus Erectus
9. Sleater-Kinney, Dig Me Out
10. The Jam, In the City

This is a tough group; after the top 4, there’s a whole mess of albums which I like but have a hard time ranking…I’m voting for the ones above, but could just as easily have gone with albums by the O’Jays, X-Ray Spex, Thelonious Monk, Stiff Little Fingers, Gorillaz, Bad Brains, Billy Bragg, U2, the Pogues, ZZ Top and Frank Sinatra.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Tie-breaker vote: The Boss.

701-800:
1. The Soft Boys, UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT
2. Steely Dan, KATY LIED
3. Guided by Voices, BEE THOUSAND
4. X-Ray Spex, GERM-FREE ADOLESCENTS
5. THE CARS
6. R.E.M., LIFES RICH PAGEANT
7. Sleater-Kinney, DIG ME OUT
8. Elvis Costello and the Attractions, BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE
9. Tom Waits, ORPHANS: BRAWLERS, BAWLERS & BASTARDS
10. Beck, MUTATIONS

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Tie-breaker: Springsteen

Votes:
1. Guided By Voices – Bee Thousand
2. The Go-Betweens – 16 Lovers Lane
3. U2 – Boy
4. Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac
5. Cat Power – You Are Free
6. Gorillaz – Demon Days
7. My Morning Jacket – Z
8. Neil Young – Zuma
9. Aztec Camera – High Land, Hard Rain
10. The Cars – The Cars

I thought that this was a pretty weak group. It's getting harder to find 10 albums that I even listen to, let alone like (I was unfamiliar with most of these albums)...

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Nassim: What makes you think he counted my list twice? The two first places for Boxer are from BillAdama and myself.

01. Dub Housing. Pere Ubu

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Wow this is a very good segment, to me. I love all of these 10. The reason I took so long was just to narrow it down.

The Cure

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Nassim: If you look down the 501-600 list, there are two albums I missed in the original ballot and added later, before counting up the scores. Boxer at #1, and Van Lear Rose at #3.

With the first 15 votes counted, there aren't as obvious frontrunners as there were in the first two lists. There are six albums between 62-72, and then a huge list of albums that would only need one or two high votes to get right back in the thick of things.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Heh, the current tiebreaker score: 8-8!

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Oops, actually Otis is right. I somehow missed Jonah's and slush's ballots for the last round, and slush voted for Springsteen. So, Springsteen does just get through.

I wonder if I can get Otis to do all the ballot counting for me, he seems to be counting them all anyway.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

I get the votes because it is fun for me, but I do not correct for BillAdama. If you are publishing the results and I have different outcomes, then send the message to my tally. Ok?

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

I thought The Cure had a chance.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

There are only 15 albums that I really can list; the others : either I never heard them, or too long ago

1. Neil Young - Zuma
2. A Tribe Called Quest People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
3. Beck - Mutations
4. Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards
5. The Soft Machine - Third
6. Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
7. The Pogues - If I Should Fall from Grace with God
8. Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
9. The Waterboys - This Is the Sea
10. The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane

First 5 are in my top 200.
Zuma is very underrated.
Mutations is my favorite Beck. When he writes normal stuff, he's a master

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

oh, and you really need to know about the ties or do you guess ? Of course : Bruce Springsteen.
1the other one is also a fav to me though

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

1. At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
2. Gorillaz - Demon Days

7. My Morning Jacket - Z
8. Billy Bragg - Talking with the Taxman About Poetry
9. The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane
10. The Gun Club - Fire of Love

4 albums in my top 100, even though 2 are quite close to the bottom of it. But Relationship of Command is an awesome album, almost the only decent successors to the Stooges trilogy.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

A tough one for me -- I guess unsurprisingly, there is not much difference in this group from 3 to 17 or so...

01. Horace Silver | Song for My Father
02. The O'Jays | Back Stabbers
03. The Beach Boys | The Beach Boys Today!
04. Charles Mingus | Blues and Roots
05. Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown | Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown
06. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers | Moanin'
07. Laura Nyro | Eli and the Thirteenth Confession
08. The Soft Boys | Underwater Moonlight
09. X-Ray Spex | Germ-Free Adolescents
10. Boards of Canada | Music Has the Right to Children

11. Ornette Coleman | Change of the Century
12. Sleater-Kinney | Dig Me Out
13. The Gun Club | Fire of Love

16. N.E.R.D. | In Search of…
17. Bad Brains | I Against I
18. Wire | 154
19. Marvin Gaye | Here, My Dear
20. Laurie Anderson | Big Science

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Oh, my bad, I'd also vote for Springsteen

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

1) Gorillaz - Demon Days
2) Neil Young - Zuma
3) U2 - Boy
4) R.E.M. - Life's Rich Pageant

7) Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
8) ZZ Top - Eliminator
9) The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
10) Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

And it seems like we don't need the tie-breaker anymore, but if we do.. Springsteen.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Sad to miss the previous thread, here’s my list:

1. AZTEC CAMERA “High Land Hard Rain” (#35 in my all-time list)
2. JAPAN “Tin Drum” (#36)
3. THE POGUES “If I Should Fall from Grace with God” (#78)
4. R.E.M. “Life’s Rich Pageant”
5. ERYKAH BADU “Baduizm”
6. MORRISSEY “You Are the Quarry”
7. THE BLUE NILE “Hats”
8. NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS “The Good Son”
9. GENESIS “Selling England by the Pound”
10. LE MYSTÈRE DES VOIX BULGARES “Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares”

I’m glad that the tie-breaker is no longer necessary, the decision was too difficult.

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

With all the votes cast so far (I count 29), there are three albums that pretty much have it locked up, the 4th place album has 101 points, then the 5th through 10th have 87, 85, 81, 76, 71, 68.

It looks like Springsteen would have won the tiebreaker vote anyway. Seventeen Seconds is probably a heavy favorite for one of the wild card spots, judging by how well it did in the 80s poll.

The reason I started this game is because I feel I have most of the albums I'm going to want from 1-500, but I think there's probably a lot of hidden gems in the lower reaches of the list. I've already gotten some good ideas. (That's also why my original point scheme was to heavily weight the ones near the top, because I want to find the ones few have heard but all who've heard love.)

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

Looks like board-midnight has past, and nobody has pushed Z into the top 5.

Qualifiers:

1. REM - Life's Rich Pageant (143/11/3)
2. Beck - Mutations (124/11/2)
3. Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear (118/7/1)
4. Gorillaz - Demon Days (101/7/2)
5. Neil Young - Zuma (87/7/1)

Runners up:

The Blue Nile - Hats (85/6/1)
My Morning Jacket - Z (81/7/1)
U2 - Boy (76/6/0)
The Cars - The Cars (71/6/1)
Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children (68/6/0)

Fun fact: Marvin Gaye didn't get a single vote lower than 3rd place.

I'm thinking now for the tie breaker, we take the top ten point getters that didn't qualify, and have a final vote between them where you only rank the top three.

Wildcard leaders:
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One 105
Pulp - This Is Hardcore 102
Beck - Midnite Vultures 101
The Cure - Seventee Seconds 98
The Kinks - Face To Face 98
Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antarctica 94
Weezer - Pinkerton 90
Cocteau Twins - Treasure: 89
Johnny Cash - At San Quentin 88
The Blue Nile - Hats 85

Re: Best moderately acclaimed albums (701-800)

My recount:

1 R.E.M. - Life's Rich Pageant/143/11/3
2 Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear/118/7/1
