I'll wait on my album list because I have a CD that has collected dust for years (I think my Dad found it on sale) that I have never listened to all the way through. BUT I have heard 7 out of the 8 songs on the album many many times, 2 songs of which first entered my ears as newer rerecorded versions. What album have I shamefully never completely heard???

* year of release uncertain
There is a lot of excellent African stuff around this time, but i'ts difficult to find the exact year of release. For example Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars - Yabis (Nigeria) or Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex & Guests - Musicawi Silt (Ethopia) would be in my Top 10 of every year in pop history.
After much agonizing over the top few spots, my albums and songs

Comments:
I really like What's Going On. It's my father's favorite album/song, and we listen to it together frequently, often over a game of pool. Behind Marvin, we have two of the greatest hard rock albums of all-time, with LZ IV barely edging out Who's Next in my book. Then the depths of amazing music in 1971 continues with some of the best albums by someo f the greatest artists in the history of music. If my top albums look a lot like AM, it's because music was so good this year, it's pretty easy to agree upon.
Also, in the early 70's most of the best music was still fairly mainstream. There was no huge broad divisive underground scene like there was starting in the 80s.

Very cool to see that Moody Blues album at #2 John!
It's quite good I suppose - I was just surprised to see it on someone's list.
Greg, Desertshore is a 1970 album.

I'll give my definitive list at the end of the month
Lots of additional albums I'd love to (re)listen to if I have the time until then : Can, Funkadelic, Janis, Allman Bros, Shaft, Ohio Players...
Recommendations welcome
Is Neu! really a '71 album? Every reference I've seen has it as '72 (including RYM, Allmusic, and Wikipedia). Can we consider it for '72 then despite AM's listing? 'Cause I want to vote for it, but there's no room this year.
Neu! is another error. Recorded in December '71 but released in '72. I suggest we vote for it next month since it hasn't got many votes here yet.

1971, the best year ever, IMO. 3 of my Top 10 albums are from this year, and 15 of my Top 100. Songwise, 16 or so in my Top 100, 26 or so Top 200, ~67 in my Top 1000.
That's pretty ridiculous.

Just realized I didn't get Colin Blunstone's One Year in my album list -- it'd be about #25, so no bearing on the results. Just wanted him to get the props.
I hereby claim bonus points for the song top fives of Fred, Sonfosamiam and that nejade guy... say 200 points per entry instead of 50 down to whatever..
signed,
yr greatest ventilator
(ps_as usual, SOS, your list does mighty Sting!! sounds..
..with the exception of Docteur Faust, that's a rather mumblin hmmmm in me.. maybe I should give him another listen or so..)
*reads: great
**(concerning adjectives or nouns like mighty and sting..)
..with the exception of Docteur Faust, that's a rather mumblin hmmmm in me.. maybe I should give him another listen or so..)
I'm shocked! And you should!
I must admit that the rest of the album can't really compete with the mightiness of "Materia Prima", what with its weird porn-funk transmogrifying into Messiaen-meets-Penderecki and giving way to disturbingly mesmerizing chanting (though that maddening siren sound does have its addictive qualities after multiple listens).
Either way, you still have the cover art.
Songs
1. John Lennon - "Imagine" (8)
2. Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven" (10)
3. The Who - "Won’t Get Fooled Again" (14)

19. Carole King - "It’s Too Late"
20. The Temptations - "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"
2nd spin report:
agreed, SOS, "Materia Prima" is one epic triptych (emphasize trip in that) of alphaville sleaze, hysterical vertov-o-scope and hellenic sulphur bath. yet also gripping is the Carnival Of Souls retrieve "Matines" with that snaky gasping proto industrial pattern underneath. I guess it's the rest that rather left me cold with all it's _Look Mum, I've baked an avantgarde pie for you/hope you don't mind that I threw everything in it I found in the kitchen_
eitherway, I have the cover art.. and as an LP cover a true kid magnet I might add..

I have two requests (but I'm the only one concerned so far)
2 albums in AM 1971 lists are dated otherwise by RYM and I think the latter is right :
- The Maytals Monkee Man, given as 1971 by AM and 1970 by RYM(and that I have included in my 1970 list)
- JJ Cale : Naturally, which is from 1972 (at least the copyright on the CD sleeve says so) and that I intended to include on my '72 list.
Nassim, unless you object, I will base my votes on RYM's dates.
nicolas, I'm not so sure about "Naturally". According to Wikipedia it was recorded in September 29, 1970–June 9, 1971 and released in December 1971.
After some more searching, I'm pretty confident that it was released on Shelter in 1971 and Mercury in 1972.
Ok so I have to listen to that album for the 1971 poll

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: BOB DYLAN “Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II”
About my usual section for my favourite Spanish song of the year I wrote about it some months ago, you can read it here. My favourite Spanish song of 1971 is, no surprises here, Joan Manuel Serrat’s "Mediterráneo". Many thanks to all the people that vote for that sensational song so far.
"Mediterráneo" is really a gem. In my opinion, is not only a great song, is also a great poem. Possibly the best lyrics of pop songs in Spanish.
Honorio, so "Sun Is Shining" made it into 14th place! This was a bit surprising to me, as I didn't think it sounded so great when we listened to it in the Tower of Song. Mixed up with other music, Lee Perry's production does sound a bit thin...
Also, I notice that "Sticky Fingers" has overtaken "Hunky Dory" during the last few days!

Excellent list, Henrik. And, yes, some of my choices for 1971 are under your direct influence. Particularly “Soul Revolution” and “Pieces of a Man”, that I’ve listened a lot during the last days. Good influence, isn`t it? But I did not include the Mahavishnu song you recommended, although I love it too. Too much competition in 1971.
Some explanation for the AM friends: in my house there’s a little tower where I got my computer, my books and my albums, that’s where I listen to music and I write for AM Forum (I mean that’s where I hide from the world outside). Henrik called that place the “Tower of Song” and we had some pleasant listening there, showing each other songs that were used as samples. He showed me that Mahavishnu song, two Isaak Hayes ones and I showed him “That’s the Way Love Is” from Marvin Gaye that was sampled by Tricky for “Aftermath”. And I found another one doing some re-listening for 1971: “Poet” by Sly & the Family Stone was sampled by De La Soul for their first album!

my guess is 5.08 PM.
OH. I'm not In Finland.
On Iceland, I mean. Btw, I'm Fred trying to figure out the deadline for voting. I was brighter as a kid.
OK. Now I got it. Right now it's 4PM in Sweden, 3PM? in Greenwich? and 2 PM on Iceland. And in the US the NHL players are having lunch. And Sean Average can see his former girlfriend breaking through on the screen. Ha!
PS. Downloading and sharing is illegal in Sweden tomorrow...so I'm done with that for a while now.
I might be luckier because of that. But I did my homework in time so...
1972 is a bit better than 1971. 1975 is real CHEESY and the Buzzcocks were gods in 1978.
Another great year.
The difference between the first three is close to nothing.

In my listening for 1971 I tracked down Surf's Up; paired on the CD was Sunflower, which I hadn't tracked down while doing my listening for 1970. The outcome? I'm not crazy about Surf's Up, but I love Sunflower. If I could redo my list for 1970, Sunflower would probably be in the top 5 or 6. Great album. Now, on to my list for 1971, another great year, and a very difficult one to pick a number 1 for--any of my top 7 or 8 could have ended up number 1:
1) Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
2) The Who - Who's Next
3) Led Zeppelin - IV
4) Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
5) Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
6) Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
7) Joni Mitchell - Blue
8) Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson

11) John Lennon - Imagine
12) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame

14) Miles Davis - Tribute to Jack Johnson
15) Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey
16) Carole King - Tapestry
17) David Bowie - Hunky Dory
18) Pink Floyd - Meddle
19) Charles Mingus - Let My Chldren Hear Music
20) Paul and Linda McCartney - Ram
PS Over half an album's worth of Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol II was new, and I wish we could make an exception to the "No collections" rule so I could put it on my list; it'd definitely be in my top 10, just on the basis of the new stuff.
PPS I'm a bit embarrassed including Ram in my list. Linda's backing vocals make it nearly unlistenable at times, and the almost smug silliness grates on my nerves, but the melodic and instrumental inventiveness win me over despite the album's very real vices.
Bit late, but better late than never!

Nicolas:
Thanks for mentioning the Prine song. I always knew I liked his tune "Angel from Montgomery" from Bonnie Raitt's cover of it, but hearing "Hello in There" means I'll have to make it a priority to borrow some of Prine's stuff from the library.
and you're lucky because finding Prine stuff in France at the library is a no-go

I'm currently moving from an apartment to another (smaller but with no flatmates this time ) so I might be a bit late for the results !
Too bad, Hello in There only got 3 votes (Greg, nicolas and myself), so it won't make it to the decade's 100.
I got to know this song via a cover by R.E.M.. Well, actually when they performed live under the name Bingo Hand Job, sometime early 90's. For me, this Prine song is the best of its year ... no need for a stairway ...
Greg Rumpff, if you can't find the original version, try Joan Baez' cover, pretty nice too.
Can we get the results? I assume T5 is Who's Next, IV, What's Going On, Sticky Fingers, and Hunky Dory, but I don't know after that.
SR, be patient please
Read the previous posts
We'll get the results be all we need is just a little patience (like Axl Rose would say)
Nassim, if it's not too late

I’m wondering how it could happened that the votes that Georgie sent on April 3rd finally showed in this thread between a nicolas comment from March 27th and the votes of VanillaFire1000 from March 27th too. Something similar happened with a netjade post on my “too bland, too soft” thread. Some problems with bravenet maybe?
Honorio, I think this is how it happened:
If you do a search in the forum, your search result may give you a link to a reply-post. When you open the link you will not see the thread's original post. If you then post a reply from that page, I
think that this reply will be "nested" right after the reply-post you found through your search.
Oh, yes, I understand. Thanks, Henrik.
i'd like to change my song list, because Hello In THere grew on me so much (you'll see why in another thread)
