Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

A single vote can still change the results ! And with only 9 points separating #11 and #14, every point may count !
Now, with the sudden rise of an album which white quite low in the list, 8 albums since already qualified... 2 places remain !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

What a great year:

1) John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
2) Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
3) Aretha Franklin - Spirit in the Dark
4) Neil Young - After the Goldrush
5) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
6) Led Zeppelin - III
7) Van Morrison - Moondance
8) Grateful Dead - American Beauty
9) The Beatles - Let It Be
10) Bob Dylan - New Morning
11) Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
12) Randy Newman - 12 Songs
13) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

16) Velvet Underground - Loaded
17) The Stooges - Fun House
18) Joni Mitchell - Ladies of the Canyon
19) Santana - Abraxas
20) The Byrds - (untitled)

I hate having to leave off many albums that I greatly enjoy (e.g., Pendulum, All Things Must Pass, Sex Machine, Morrison Hotel, and the two Black Sabbath albums, both of which I'm rather ambivalent about, but both of which have undeniable power); I also regret that, after nearly four decades, there are some potentially excellent albums that I still haven't heard (e.g., Duke Ellington's New Orleans Suite).

Since 1970 was such a great song year I want to give an honorable mention shout-out to All I Wanna Do by the Beach Boys, and Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time by the Delfonics. I went back and forth between these two and the end of the list. It was a very close margin.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

And here are the albums qualified to the final round :

1 - Neil Young - After the Goldrush
2 - Van Morrison - Moondance
3 - John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
4 - Velvet Underground , The - Loaded
5 - Stooges, The - Fun House
6 - Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
7 - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
8 - Nick Drake - Bryter Layer
9 - Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
10 - Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

There is the tie on the 11th position between Black Sabbath and Curtis Mayfield, closely followed by CSNY, the Beatles and the Beach Boys, all which might have been qualified with a single more or less vote.

Lowest AM ranked albums qualified : Nick Drake - Bryter Layter (#13 of the year) and I love you for that
Highest AM ranked album not qualified : Black Sabbath - Paranoid (#8 of the year) and I hate you for that

Our selection is quite close to the AM rank as you can see, the main difference between Santana ranked 25th in our list, quite far for the top 10.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Nice, good results, though I'm a little surprised to see Moondance edge out Plastic Ono Band for 2nd. Anyway, when does voting for 1971 start? I've already started thinking about my list, and it's not easy. The year is just absurd.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Art Ensemble Of Chicago - Theme de Yo-Yo (tx, sonofsam)
David Axelrod - The Sign, Part 1&4(tx, georgie)
Lee Hazlewood – Hey Cowboy (beware, bubblegum)
Lee Hazlewood – No Train To Stockholm (tx, Swedish Rail)

Thankyou Academy, Thankyou Pencil, Thankyou Robot...2008 Japanese Oscar winner (cartoonish)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Thanks Nassim for the album results! Perhaps there will be room for some more surprises in the songs list? The individual lists had a lot of less-acclaimed but indeed interesting choices, but to reach the total top 10 requires a lot of points, especially for albums.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

1971 is a ridiculously good year.

I still say 1971 should get one or two of the spots allocated to 1976.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

1976 is the 1981 of the 70's. I think I have about 5 from that year...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I may be the oldest person posting on here--I'm 48--but I'm learning new things from you all. Curtis didn't make my list, but if I'd had some more time with it, it might have eventually made it. I'd known "Move On Up" for as long as I can remember, but the rest of the album was new to me until less than a weak ago. That's why I love reading this forum!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

There is the tie on the 11th position between Black Sabbath and Curtis Mayfield

The fact that these 2 just missed saddens me deeply.

Can't wait for the songs results!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Damn, did I miss the boat? February is way too short a month for such a glorious year as 1970.

Anyway, here's a lucky 13 of 1970 albums. I give up on selecting songs ... although for once I have no doubt which would be no. 1 -- hearing "My Sweet Lord" on the radio still has that same effect on me as that guy swallowing a mouthful of some cake in Proust's "Remembrance of things past"

1970 albums

1) Pearls Before Swine – The Use of Ashes
2) Neil Young – After the Gold Rush
3) CSNY – Déjà vu
4) Simon & Garfunkel – Bridge over Troubled Water
5) Nick Drake – Bryter Layter
6) CCR – Cosmo’s Factory
7) The Band – Stage Fright
The Doors – Absolutely Live
9) The Gratefuld Dead – American Beauty
10) Spirit – The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
11) John Cale – Vintage Violence
12) Dylan – New Morning
13) The Pretty Things – Parachute

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Damn those smilies

I see the results are up already ... and that it wouldn't have changed things for me to be on time.

Hey, Mike Kelly, good to see a fellow old geezer. and yes, you learn as long as you're willing to.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

And here are the songs that made the cut :

1 - Derek & the Dominos - Layla
2 - Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
3 - James Brown - Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine
4 - Black Sabbath - Paranoid
5 - Velvet Underground, The - Sweet Jane
6 - Velvet Underground, The - Rock and Roll
7 - Kinks, The - Lola
8 - Neil Young - After the Goldrush
9 - Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up
10 - John Lennon - Working Class Hero

Not much competition for those 10, only Moondance, Instant Karma and Let it Be kept slight chance to make the cut.

Most acclaimed song not qualified : James Taylor - Fire and Rain (ranked #5 on AM list for 1970)
Least acclaimed song qualified : Neil Young - After the Goldrush (#44)

Most acclaimed song with no vote : Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter (#16)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Still a lot of listening for me to do.
I did like Mayfield's "Move on Up", and "..Hell Below" and that Eugene McDaniels "Unspoken Dreams.." track so thanks for those suggestions.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Nassim, are we going to get to see spreadsheets listing all the albums and songs that got votes, as was the case for the yearly installments of the previous decade polls? Just wondering.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Yes you will... I'm just wondering how I can post them ^^

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Send it to me (henrik.franzon [at] gmail.com) and I'll upload it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Here's the spreadsheet. Thanks for sending, Nassim.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Damn, I should have voted for Moondance.

Good job Nassim, I know how much work goes into it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Nassim, I don't know how to tell you this, but my album ratings are missing from the spreadsheet. My songs are there, but my 20 albums aren't.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

not even in the Cuddlin' RockyRaccoon 'til I die section? hmmm..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Ok,
With the addition of Harold's vote, here are the new results :

1 - Neil Young - After the Goldrush
2 - Van Morrison - Moondance
3 - John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
4 - Stooges, The - Fun House
5 - Velvet Underground , The - Loaded
6 - Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
7 - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
8 - Nick Drake - Bryter Layer
9 - Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
10 - Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

The only difference is that Fun House is now ranked just before Loaded !
I Will check tomorrow that there isn't any other vote missing but I think it is ok now.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

That section's reserved for you, Netjade.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Yaaay, lots of spikes and candy.... !!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Looks like I won the contest for most unconventional tastes! Only until #29 do my first 3 points go to My Sweet Lord.

Take that, netjade!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

well Jonah you have voted for 5 of the 10 winning albums while netjade only voted for 1 ^^
But well, you are even more unconventional than him on songs... which is hard ! (only in a way, netjade has 16 songs he is the only one to have listed while you only get 13 ^^ )

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

(go, dumbass use of visualization..)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

and thanks, nic... no living space for female pop geeks, that's too bad...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I actually meant to say I had the most unconventional song tastes, for the record. I'm sure netjade will beat me in other years. This is her chance to give some suggestions for 1976, which we've discussed is a very weak year. Maybe with a netjade approved list I can have 1976 in a parallel universe where music didn't suck.
