Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Welcome to the first part of the '70s acclaimed music forum poll. This month we will focus on 1970, the year the Beatles broke up and, most importantly, Mariah Carey was born.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 28th of February. For the scoring, rules and other details check here

You should have a look at the 1970 album and song lists before voting, I will check for each song and albums if they have been release in the good year anyway.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

nj, great first choice
At last, I know the major part of your list...
the 70s... feels like being back home after a long journey

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

and Nick, don't worry about your list being close to AM's...
Maybe you should try to listen to a maximum 1971 new albums for the next vote

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

By the way, does it bother anyone if I make up a few lists to make War Pigs reach the top 10 ? ^^

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

This might be a helpful reference as we're coming up with our lists (in addition to what's on AM):

There's a branch of there for each individual year....

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I don't know how I ranked 1970 in the years countdown we did sometime back, but I think this has to be close to #1. The list of songs could go on and on. 1970 looks like the year of the perfect side-length songs. At least 4 on my list are over 15 minutes and are not the least bit tedious. Good thing progressive rock and fusion didn't get too excessive and ridiculous in later years!!!

1. The Who - A Quick One, While He's Away (Live)

2. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - The Little House I Used to Live In

3. The Velvet Underground - New Age

4. Pink Floyd - Summer '68

5. The Moody Blues - It's Up To You

6. Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Carry On

7. Frank Zappa - Sharleena

8. The Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin'

9. John Lennon - Mother

10. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves the Sun?

11. The Moody Blues - Question

12. The Beach Boys - Slip On Through

13. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

14. George Harrison - Wah-Wah

15. Frank Zappa - Chunga's Revenge

16. Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention - My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama

17. Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother

18. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord

19. Miles Davis - Spanish Key

20. Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind

I really look forward to see what makes the cut for this year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

OK, I need a call on this one.

My #1 is the Live at Leeds version of A Quick One, While He's Away.

But I just checked and that song was NOT on the original Live at Leeds 1970 release. The version of Live at Leeds I came to know and love was the 1995 CD remaster which included a lot more extra tracks. So this song was definitely performed and recorded in 1970, but no one could own a legitimate copy of that recording at that time. I'm actually not sure how much bootlegging might have happened back then.

So, should it count?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

1970 is my second best year of all time (along with 1972 and after 1969) in my top 200.
So it's gonna be tough, especially for the top slot (Gold rush or Cosmos) ?
And there are tons of albums I haven't heard. Guess that 4 weeks won't be too much.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Comments galore!

netjade: Brilliant lists...Minnie Riperton! Os Mutantes!! Exuma!!! Eugene McDaniels!!!! The Stark Reality!!!!!

Jonah: Tough call on "A Quick One"...have you heard the Rock 'n' Roll Circus one? (You can find it on The Kids Are Alright soundtrack and the Maximum R&B box set.) That's always been the definitive version for me, and I believe it's a 1968 recording. The original from '66 is swell, too.

Anyway, you could also just swap in "Young Man Blues"! (hint, hint)

Fred: As always, brilliant stuff. But, "Move On Up" No. 2 and no Curtis in the albums list? Also, are you referring to the full-band version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (a 1971 release) or the starker version from Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (which was indeed 1970)? I plan to vote for the '71 version next month. (Weirdest of all, it's listed as bubbling under for 1973 on AM, which I'm pretty sure is incorrect.) Anyway, any publicity is good publicity for Gil!

Final pedantic note - "Three Hours" should likely be voted for in 1969.

Sorry to be so picky!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Wow...1970 after 1989...it's like being thrown into civilisation or into the fire out of the ashes or similar.

Sorry, SonOfSam...I always FELT Curtis would be an interresting artist for me, thus I tried ALL recommendations for him, but no...but don't give up on me, who knows what future might bring :) I have his first in my hands soon...

"Revolution" with orchestra? You know what release? "Small Talk" track is accapella?

"Three Hours" is from 1969. Thanks! Warning lamp should have been litted when including Drake songs from different albums...

Netjade. Doris are from Sweden!...great song. I often planned to do an invention over swedish rock music. And "Loffe" is playing drums! Cool. The worlds best acting drummer. Better at drumming than acting that is. Or maybe Phil Collins, I don't know...

Rodriguez...Lee Hazelwoods little brother? "Hoax" made my day today.

I like a lot of stuff from 1970, and would even place it in the top half of the deck. However it doesn't really do it for me like other years in the 70s, so I find myself falling back on Beatles stuff. If I had had to assign a "winner" of the year, it would be John Lennon. I think Plastic Ono Band is on par with a lot of the beatles stuff, and Instant Karma is a fantastic song.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

The ones I haven't heard that seem to be coming up over and over again are Starsailor and Sunflower.

What sort of albums are they? Is Sunflower sans Brian Wilson? How does that affect the music, is it more poppy like the early BB stuff?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

BillAdama, I think there are a couple big fans of Beach Boys Sunflower / Surf's Up around here and maybe they would like to chime in.

About a year and half ago I picked up the Sunflower/Surf's Up combined CD and it's really wonderful. It's hard to wedge 1970's Sunflower from 1971's Surf's Up, because they seem meant to be heard together. All over Sunflower you can hear their sound maturing to a balance between gorgeous poppy harmonies and experimentation, which culminates in the last Brian Wilson tracks on Surf's Up.

Just about every acclaimed early 70s album is summarized as somehow a reaction to the shallow elements of hippies and flower power as violent events wrapped up the sixties. While many artists responded with justifiably cynical and frustrated music, the Beach Boys, in these records, seemed to have found solace in the basic beauty of the harmonies that made them so popular when they were just singing about surfing and girls. But in their often uneasy and often sad delivery you can sense something under the surface that makes the beautiful songs and lyrics more intriguing.

As for the Quick One, While He's Away "controversy" that song actually climbed to the top because it was the only 1970 song on my top 100 songs of all time list. I think, however, that I was combining my appreciate for both the Live at Leeds version AND the studio version from the album A Quick One. So I'll have to think about this some more. Unless other people say something contrary, I'm going to assume that the full concert at Leeds must have been bootlegged at the time and that someone, somewhere, was able to get that version of the song on the black market circa 1970. But I'll listen to those other versions when I can!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Fred: i love that song "little green bag"! thank goodness for reservoir dogs or i would probably never know that song.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Michael. A friend of mine thinks it's the ultimate party song! And I'm bound to agree. I don't remember where in "Resevoir Dogs" the play it...probably before the robbery...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

it's during the credits after the conversation about madonna's "like a virgin"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLZ5AVHfnCs

anybody who has not seen Quentin Taratino's Reservoir Dogs, I highly recommend it. It was his first film and it's just as cool as Pulp Fiction.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Okay after not finding AMF until well into the 90's poll, and feeling un qualified to join in the 80's fun, I dip my toe into the 70's warily and with respect for the broader knowledge of my borthers and sisters on this forum. I'll try not to merely parrot the consensus, but in many cases, the consensus is all that I am familiar with. Generally this means there are a dearth of albums that I am truly familiar with. (I'll be frank, a number of those picks are based upon long ago listens.) However, I'd like to think I can throw a few curveballs into the discussion, particularly on the song side.

Albums:

1) After The Goldrush -- Neil Young (Easy choice. My #3 of all time.)

2) Historic Performances Recorded At The Monterey Pop Festival -- Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding (The strangest (and soon after its release most pothumous) double billing to be released on record. AM has it listed as a 1970 album, so who am I to argue. It's the performance that vaulted Hendrix into superstardom, but man-o-man do I love Redding at Monterey. Best experienced not on vinyl, but by firing up those old clips from the documentary on You Tube.)

3) Deja Vu -- CSN&Y (Yes, Neil Young had quite a year.)

4) Sex Machine -- James Brown (Vintage, Bootsy-era, live JB)

5) Workingman's Dead -- The Grateful Dead (As "end of the dream" 1969 gave way, probably the least likely band of the era pointed the way forward, certainly business-wise, but also musically to a certain extent. For the first time, the songwriting and performances actually deliver.)

6) Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround -- The Kinks (Not as strong of a collection as they had previously delivered, but a few powerful songs.)

7) Bridge Over Troubled Water -- Simon & Garfunkel (Overrated, but bolstered by 1969 single The Boxer)

8) Loaded -- The Velvet Underground (See my comment for Lola Versus..., but even more so)

9) Curtis -- Curtis Mayfield (I'm still kinda upset he left the Impressions, but I suppose it was for the best.)

10) Company -- Original Soundtrack ("Oh Shit! He did not go there on this rock/soul-centered forum!" You better believe I did. Look, it suffers from some of the sins of its genre, as well as the sins of it composer, but Sondheim is beginning to really reach now.)

11) All Things Must Pass -- George Harrison

12) Cosmo's Factory -- CCR

13) Let It Be -- The Beatles

14) Fun House -- The Stooges

15) Moondance -- Van Morrison

16) American Beauty -- Grateful Dead

17) Funkadelic -- Funkadelic

Songs --

1) Get Up (Sex Machine) -- James Brown (This is the time period when James Brown moves from icon to something even greater. This song is the tightest example of how he blew up soul and created the funk revolution.)

2) Sweet Jane -- The Velvet Underground (In the great Lou Reed canon, this song is head and shoulders above the rest.)

3) Only Love Can Break Your Heart -- Neil Young (You're wrong, Neil. Your songs (and their gorgeous harmonies) do a pretty damn good job of it as well.)

4) The Love You Save - The Jackson 5 (The greatest bubblegum pop song of all time? If "I Want You Back" is not in the discussion... then yeah, maybe.)

5) Rock And Roll -- The Velvet Underground (A founding mythos for many suburban kids.)

6) We Can Work It Out -- Stevie Wonder (A sweet reworking of the ultimate Lennon/McCartney dichotomy tune. Wonder halves the difference and declares, "Let's groove on this mother. 'Hey!'"

7) Helpless -- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (As nice as the other, non-Young tunes are on Deja Vu are, this song (which could have been an After the Goldrush outtake) bores most deeply.)

8) Tell Me Why -- Neil Young (I don't know what this song is about. It's still beautiful.)

9) Instant Karma! -- John Lennon (Lennon's best solo output.)

10) I Can't Get Next To You -- Al Green (The interplay between Al and his backup singers, with lots of spaces for the groove, is delicious.)

11) Move On Up -- Curtis Mayfield

12) Rubber Duckie -- Ernie/Jim Henson (If 1970 was the year of Neil Young (with the Jackson 5 also making a run at the title), let's not forget what a huge year 1970 was for the folks at the Children's Television Workshop. Premiering two months before the start of the new decade, one can't underestimate the importance the show has had in shaping popular culture by shaping the young minds that watch it. Musically, that shaping was in large part accomplished by Joe Raposo, the great songwriter responsible for so many recognizable tunes from the show. Pair this song with the second greatest voice actor of his generation (sorry, but Frank Oz is even better), and you get a delightful tune. And yes, it actually charted.)

13) In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed -- The Allman Brothers Band

14) Super Bad - James Brown

15) Get Back In Line - The Kinks

16) Ripple - Grateful Dead

17) We Gotta Get You A Woman - Todd Rundgren

18) Pressure Drop - Toots and the Maytalls

19) Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder

20) Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) - The Delfonics

21) If I Were Your Woman -- Gladys Knight and the Pips (Gladys Knight is the most underrated of all soul singers. The song is actually pretty pedestrian, but damn can she sing.)

22) The Only Living Boy In New York -- Simon & Garfunkel

23) ABC -- The Jackson 5

24) Apeman -- The Kinks

25) Two of Us -- The Beatles

26) Take Me To The Pilot -- Elton John

27) Who'll Stop The Rain -- CCR

28) Cry Me A River (Live) -- Joe Cocker

29) Truckin' -- Grateful Dead

30) If There's A Hell Below... -- Curtis Mayfield

31) Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps

32) Funky Drummer - James Brown (Possibly the most important song of this year?)

33) Ain't No Mountain High Enough -- Diana Ross (A bloated, beautiful mess)

34) Layla -- Derek and the Dominos

35) Lola -- The Kinks

Also, in no particular order: Southern Man (Neil Young); Oye Como Va (Santana); So Long Frank Lloyd Wright (Simon & Garfunkel); Cecilia (Simon & Garfunkel); 25 Or 6 To 4 (Chicago); Run Through The Jungle (CCR); Our House (CSNY); Ohio (CSNY); T.V. Eye (The Stooges); Cracklin’ Rosie (Neil Diamond); If I Were A Carpenter (Johnny and June Carter Cash); Midnight Rider (Allman Brothers); Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (Jackson 5); God (John Lennon); Dig A Pony (The Beatles); The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie); Into The Mystic (Van Morrison); Mama Told Me Not To Come (Three Dog Night); Joy To The World (Three Dog Night); Have You Ever Seen The Rain (CCR); The Seeker (The Who); Stage Fright (The Band); The Shape I’m In (The Band); Panis Et Orcenses (Os Mutantes); Desculpe Babe (Os Mutantes); Ike’s Rap I (Isaac Hayes); High Time (Grateful Dead); Bein’ Green (Kermit the Frog/Jim Henson)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

..guys, thanks very much, you embarrass me - guess I have to hold some kind of acceptance speech now...

nicolas: why that surprise? look at the critics lists on AM: Germans are simply bound to adore Curtis (really... reminds me a bit of the John discovery, you know, the Scott Walker phenomena)..
..but, again, nooo, I'm kidddinnnng -
just be assured that in the pre-punk era we'll both have a lot more musical preferences in common than you might have assumed... well, at least a tad more than one bit from Les Rita Mitsouko, I think..

sonofsamiam: wow, look at THAT J.J. Abrams amount of authentically detonating exclamation points... I'm literally overwhelmed. but don't worry, I'm going to repay them soon enough, "next year" at the latest, when your recommendation of the superbly charming Paint America Love will have marked its saccharine (or should I say seraphiccharine) footsteps on my spreadsheet..

Fred: yeah, Doris were one of my lucky picks at the iTunes store, on one of those days where you just skip through the samples of the latest recommendations and suddenly get struck by one of these "waitwaitwait... what was that?!" epiphanies... and Did You Give The World Some Love Today stills grows on me - simply put: Swedadelica rocks...

ps: Suzanne is my definite Stalker song. I's my best friend's name, too. I fking hate her..

(...kiddddinnnnnng..)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

and Brigitte Fontaine too...
I only know the title song but I borrowed the album at the library but haven't heard it yet
What a weird woman... I saw her a few years ago in a restaurant in Paris, she had almost compeleely shaven her hair and she was like 65 or something
You should googleimage her if you haven't seen her looks
One day she was invited on a TV show and she kept getting up from her chair and walking all around the set mumbling bizarre things with her shaven hair..
But she's great, she's a poet and she made very good songs

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

indeed - paradoxically she seems to be the dignified version of "our" much more predictable yet more in(s)ane Nina Hagen... and don't try to google for that one.. how's Desireless doin' btw?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

and how does the drumming talent of your kid advance?
no, no, sorry, that's a rather stupid smiley

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

... but an earnest question!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

That was a very appropriate smiley...
Sometimes I feel like my kids do that do me (My daughter : "Mummy, why do the big ones love sleeping ?")
And Basile my drumming son, loves to bang on my head with his hands (especially after eating with these same hands)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Every month it's the same thing : I like when you post your lists early but I can't post mine because I want to listen, and re-listen to a maximum albums to give a "fresh" list
But I guess I found a way. I'm gonna make myself a RYM list that I'll update all month long until the last day, and I'll give the link so you can see it.
For the moment, my list is quite classical : all Am stuff. As for the number 1, I listened to Gold Rush the other day and, unless there's a miracle, it will be first (and probably still in my all-time top 10)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Not that I mind early lists, but I thought they would be fewer with the 1970 recommendations thread. Those of you who have already posted your lists, are you already working on your 1971 lists?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I've mused over my 1971 list, however it will be very hard for me to make, as '71 is my 3rd favorite year of all-time, and my number 1 non-60s year. The one thing I'm sure of is that What's Going On will be topping both songs and albums.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Hey to each his own preference, but there are songs and albums that I heard early in my music-appreciating life that have stood the test of time and help evoke timeless memories of where I was when I first heard it, when it played at a perfect moment, etc.

I appreciate the recommendations, but there is no way a song new to my years can compete with my old favorites. With the 80s it was a little different because I could hardly get to the minimum 5 for each year. The least the recommendations could do is remind me of some songs I might have forgotten.

I know I could wait a little bit longer, but I'm a list-making addict! This forum doesn't help treat that addiction. At least 3 lists this week!

Yes, I'm already taking notes for 1971, so in a way I do think about this far ahead of time, I'm just on a different listening schedule then some of you.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Yep, Henrik, I like to work a month in advance. Knowing this was coming up, I delved into 1970 during January. Although I've still got to figure out the order of my songs.
But this month I'm reliving 1971. OK, maybe not reliving, since I spent the latter part of the year in the womb; but I'm sure my mom listened to some of this music while she was pregnant.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

this is my list in progress

Nassim, this is not my definitive list. I'll post it at the end of the month.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Michel, The Boxer is a 1969 song according to AM. I almost included it in my list.

Unless The Boxer on the 1970 Bridge album is a significantly different version?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I've narrowed it down to 16 albums I'm considering. I'm working my list through the program I wrote. Only, I have it 'suggest' 6 albums, then listen to them and rank them, suggest 6 more, listen and rank, etc.

It should be fun to see how this works out.

I've decided not to include Bitches Brew, because while I consider it an awesome album, I find that I judge jazz and rock so differently it's impossible for me to rank them side by side.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

John:

Unless I'm mistaken the song and album Zombie by Fela Kuti are circa 1976-1977. Did you mean a different album? Maybe that one with Ginger Baker, which I think was released in 1970.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Why is everyone voting so early?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

167 songs to hear?!?!

You guys are killing me

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Rhapsody must have mistook the title Fela Kuti and Afrika 70 to mean 1970.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Is it cool if I make a change in order? (no new songs, I promise). I just forgot how great "Lola" is. The only songs effected are 14-19. Also, Nicolas, I'm surprised not to see either of the Grateful Dead's 1970 albums on your list. It seems like the type of rootsy, folksy music you like.

14. The Kinks - "Lola"
15. Santana - "Samba Pa Ti"
16. The Beatles - "Get Back"
17. Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
18. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - "Ohio"
19. Elton John - "Your Song"
20. The Grateful Dead - "Casey Jones"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Get Back is a great song but its AM 1969.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

OK, here's the updated bottom of the list:

14. The Kinks - "Lola"
15. Santana - "Samba Pa Ti"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Stephan:

Is there a 1970 version of Smoke on the Water? Because it's listed as a 1972 song on AM. I'm only familiar with the Machine Head version of that song.

Puente sobre aguas turbulentas

You can find interesting (and probably quite bizarre) this thing about the Spanish release of S&G “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. My mum bought the album when I was a child and, although the years has tempered its influence on me (I put only on #7 on my 1970 list and even I prefer “Bookends” now), it was one of these albums that shaped my music taste. But this post is to point the level of sophistication of Spanish censorship at the time (during Franco dictatorship).
I endorse a scan of this release and you can see how the word “Turbulentas” (Spanish for “Troubled”) is displaced on the cover art to the right with the purpose of hiding some lyrics. What lyrics?:

“Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia
Up in my bedroom
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place”.

So the Spanish censorship were very “troubled” about that ideas of free love coming to the immaculate minds of Spanish youth. Even Simon & Garfunkel were dangerous then! This is not the only case, I own a copy of Lou Reed’s “Berlin” without “The Kids” and a friend of mine own a Spanish release of “Sticky Fingers” without “Sister Morphine”.
But you have to admit that the way of censoring displacing the words on the title was quite smart, isn’t it?

Click here if you want to see a partial scan of the cover art. You can see also the many times it’s been played for the erosion of the cover.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

nj, that Kevin Ayers album sounds gorgeous ! I've listened to a couple tracks and I like it (the one about the oyster with Nico)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

In my ongoing list (unfinished) I have rated Ike and Tine Turner's "Workin' Together" album;
RYM and other sources have it as 1970, but for Allmusic guide it's 1971.
It's not in AM 3000, but I think Henrik always takes the RYM date, so according to this site it is 1970.
So if you have already voted and you think this album that you thought was 1971 derserves to be part of your 1970 list, please don't forget to submit a new one

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Rocky Raccoon

Sorry I hadn't seen your post on G Dead.
Well... I don't know these albums very well in fact
If I have the time, I'll give them a listen. 1970 is so rich...

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: SLY & THE FAMILY STONE “Greatest Hits”

My favourite Spanish song of 1970: Pau Riba acompanyat per Om’s "Noia de porcellana"

Pau Riba was (is) capable of the best and the worst. He’s probably the best songwriter of his generation but it’s also its worst singer. His lyrics are able of creating suggestive images (he’s grandson of two great Catalonian poets) but frequently he’s victim of his own verbosity. Musically he’s responsible of many inspired and brilliant moments but occasionally his songs sound lazy and unfinished. But “Dioptria” (“Diopter”), his first album and his unsurpassed masterpiece, was (almost) completely filled with brilliance. It was conceived as a double album, but it was released separately (but with a double cover that included the credits for both albums). In Riba’s own words: “I planned to debut with a double album, with a LP dedicated to the women and the other to the men, mother and father if we consider the piece as a whole as a ferocious rant against the petit bourgeois family as the “basic cell of society””. The first album (the one about the women) was released in January of 1970 with Pau Riba backed by Om, a folk-rock band including splendid musicians as Toti Soler on guitar, Jordi Sabatés on piano or Romà Escales on flute. The second album, released in 1971 within a simple paper bag, featured a completely different approach with a sound that today could fit perfectly into the “weird folk” scene. Pau Riba again: “The second album was almost completely played only by Albert Batiste and myself (… I had a leadership crisis then and I was looking for a more hippie sound too”.
The first album was filled with caustic lyrics about the conventional way of thinking of the women/mothers of the Spain of the sixties but, in Lluis Lles words for Rockdelux “amidst the material of Riba’s first album there was a resplendent jewel that shined brighter than the others, and it was “Porcelain Girl”, a delicate melody that wrapped poetry as bittersweet as the best defeat”. “Sweet” for the music performance (especially the flute arrangements) and “bitter” for the acid (but poetic) view on the porcelain girls, so delicate on their surface but so empty on their inside. I strongly recommend you to read the lyrics, with such brilliant lines as “I was searching for a soul inside you / but it was like chasing white butterflies on the snow.”.

NOIA DE PORCELLANA
Composer: Pau Riba
Performer: PAU RIBA acompanyat per OM
First release: 1968 (“Noia de porcellana” single, but I’ve chosen the 1970 album version for its richer arrangements)
Length: 4’03”

Noia de porcellana
buscava una ànima dintre teu
i això era com buscar
papallones blanques damunt la neu.

Noia de porcellana
la teva entranya es plena de vent
una brisa de maig
amb pètals de rosa és aire innocent.

Noia de porcellana
tot el teu cos és un recipient
a punt per ser omplert d’aigua
i posar-hi un lliri quan ve el bon temps.

Noia de porcellana
buscava força en el teu parlar
i això era com buscar
papallones blaves damunt la mar.

Noia de porcellana
d’una mirada et van trencar un braç
semblaves indignada
com una santa sense beats.

Noia de porcellana
tota ets fràgil que t’has tancat
sota d’una campana
que sona dolça i és de cristall.

Noia de porcellana
buscava llum en la teva pell
i això era com buscar
papallones d’aire allà on bufa el vent.

Noia de porcellana
tens la mirada ben transparent
la pell de celofana i
la carn translúcida i repelent.

Noia de porcellana
que vols que et donin no donant res
ets freda i inhumana
et preocupes de cinc a set.

PORCELAIN GIRL

Porcelain girl
I was searching for a soul inside you
but it was like chasing
white butterflies on the snow.

Porcelain girl
you got wind at your core
a May breeze
with rose petals, innocent air.

Porcelain girl
your body is a recipient
ready to be filled with water
for putting a lily when the weather’s good.

Porcelain girl
I was searching for strength in your talk
but it was like chasing
blue butterflies on the sea.

Porcelain girl
someone broke your arm with a look
you seemed outraged
like a saint without devout.

Porcelain girl
you’re so fragile that you’re hidden
under a crystal-made bell
that sounds sweetly.

Porcelain girl
I was searching for light in your skin
but it was like chasing
air butterflies where the wind blows.

Porcelain girl
you got a transparent look
a cellophane skin
and a translucent and repellent flesh.

Porcelain girl
what are you expecting to get if you don’t give
you’re cold and inhuman
you worry from five to seven.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Very nice, Honorio. Even if his singing is grating.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Glad you liked it, Rocky. Yes, I told this, Pau Riba was not a good singer by any means. Maybe he should have opted for writing songs for other artists, but I suppose that his ego didn’t allow him to do that.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Oh, and Charlie Driggs ... fantastic list! Hopefully the 2 #1 placements for "Theme de Yo-Yo" will cause people to check it out.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

The most common version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is from 1971 and I will include it in my 71 list.

I suggest it's eligible both years...or you could only vote for it once...anyway it's a song you want to include wherever possible :)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Sorry, forgot to label them. Pretty obvious anyway...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

In my opinion, Riba's voice is not "grained" at all, but the truth is that my favourite version of "Noia de porcelana" is the Serrat's cover of this song, recorded in 1996 and included in his fantastic double album "Banda sonora d'un temps, d'un pais".

By the way, Honorio. Do you really think your list is "mainstream"?. Maybe, in Spain, we generally use this expression in a different sense...

5) CSNY - Déjà-vu

2 days (and a few hours) left to vote !

So far 25 people have voted for a total of 104 albums.
7 of them seem now out of reach but the battle for the 3 remaining places is tough with 8 albums battling to get in the final list ! And the artist list between #11 and #30 is incredible prestigious !

(no clue for songs, I have not started the spreadsheet at all ^^ )

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Nassim, how do you want to handle Brigitte Fontaine's "Comme à la Radio", which is listed under 1971 at AM (I got the wrong information from AMG) but has already gotten a couple of votes here?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Well I would rather consider it as a 1970 album, but if someone want to vote for it next year to be aligned with AM it's no big deal, I don't think it would make a really big difference !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

Hi, Miguel, I like a lot too the Serrat cover (and his 1996 double album about cançó too!). About “mainstream” you’re right, the list is only mainstream in AM Forum terms, not probably in the usual meaning. And what the hell, I voted for Barrett’s “Dark Globe”, “a first-person portrait of schizophrenia” according to Stewart Manson from AMG! This is not mainstream, isn’t it?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

I discovered and loved "Yo-Yo", but due to the incredible quality of the year '70, I'm afraid it won't reach my top 20

Thanks netjade.
Your list was also awesome. I haven't heard of Essra Mohawk before your post (yeah, I notices her album is in bubbling under). I must check that album too.
You Never Come Close by Doris was also very pleasant discovery. I'm sure I have heard it a long long time ago. Maybe even in the early 90's?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

And about Pekka Streng.
I think his second album Kesämaa (Summerland) is better album. It's more folky than Magneettimiehen kuolema (Death of magnetic man). Both albums are anyway good.
Pekka Streng died of cancer in 1975 at age 26.

Here's the last song of Magneettimien kuolema.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

so, after a primal Magneettimiehen kuolema hook and as enthuastically as can be, lucky nj concludes: Julie Driscoll finally found her finnish male counterpart... very cool..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1970

while I'm reading about his deadly cancer... dims the city lights pretty harshly...
