Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

It must have been someone else who had '3 Feet High and Rising' at #12 - I didn't rank it. Damn that album is hard to get,it's not on itunes or in any stores. I thought I was in luck a few weeks ago when I won it in an auction but the seller never sent it and refunded me...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Hey, Toni, I’m glad that the confusion with the comment about “Swordfishtrombones” can give it a second chance for you. When I read that you put that album on #100 (being my #1) I thought: “Oh, God, when Henrik makes the calculations Toni and me are going to have the lowest possible degree of correlation!” Anyway, Toni, we still can be friends, can we?

Great list, everyone. The remaining Top 10 is absolutely glorious. Probably "Doolittle" got the best chances for the #1, but I hope that Mozzer can reach a honourable position.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Yes, my bad. That was Nicolas. I seem to credit Nicolas' efforts to other people a lot.

Biggest fans:
otisredding (#1), Adrian (#2), Sonofsamiam (#2), Rocky Raccoon (#5), Harold Wexler (#6)

This album is growing on me. I bet that in a year it will be higher. Chuck D has a great great voice, the power is really amazing. (Nicolas)

Place in the 1989 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 1

#8

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (198

Score: 1506 points

R.E.M. - Murmur (1983)

Score: 1533 points

Biggest fans:
Andre (#2), Toni (#3), Jonah (#4), Snusmumrik (#5), Harold Wexler (#9), Michel (#9)

Comments:
I wish R.E.M. had preserved this folky, delicate spirit in their next productions. The thing about this record is exactlly the fine acoustic guitar arrangements added to Buck' simple and unique guitar textures. There's not a significant number of great tracks, but the conjoint is surely much more than the sum of the parts. (Toni)

Place in the 1983 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 10

#6

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (1985)

Score: 1572 points

Biggest fans:
Nicolas (#2), Adrian (#3), tremolo (#3), SuperFurry (#4), Netjade (#5)

Comments:
When Tom Waits the Californian meets New York and digs into the underbelly of the Big Apple and in the bowels of American music. Thanks to Mark ribot, it's Wait's most guitar-oriented album, with some of his very best songs ("Time", "Jockey Full of Burbon", "Hang Down Your Head) (Nicolas)
From polka to tango, from country to cabaret, from blues to power ballads, the strong music personality of Waits could effortlessly stick it together. (Honorio)

Place in the 1985 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 22

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Great list again, I love the remaining Top 5. The high position of “Rain Dogs” is a (nice) surprise, but the biggest surprise for me is not to find the albums #8-10 in the final Top 5.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Haha, Honorio, I had also noticed that my exact last spot (#70) was your #1! But, on the other hand, I'd given Rain Dogs quite a good place. I think I was expecting so much to hate it before the first listen that it became a very good surprise for me!

Well, I thought Murmur would make at least the top 5 (don't know why, I was imagining it would be number 3), but it has had a good position anyway. My only real disappointments so far were the low placements for The Stone Roses and The Joshua Tree.

And now it's time to root for Sign O' the Times! Go, Prince!!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Let's see again who's still in the game. I said before that we had our top 20 albums all from the AM top 22, but for our top 5 there is somewhat less correlation with the critics.

AM #2 Sign O The Times
AM #3 The Queen Is Dead
AM #6 Remain In Light
AM #9 Purple Rain
AM #12 Doolittle

Wow, two Prince albums left!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

#5

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead (1986)

Score: 1623 points

Biggest fans:
Midaso (#1), Honorio (#2), BillAdama (#3), Greg (#4), Fred (#6), tremolo (#6), Mo (#6)

Comments:
It’s not by chance that we have in the final Top 100 the complete discography of The Smiths, the best band of the 80s in my opinion. “The Queen Is Dead” is their peak, with Morrissey going from anger to humour, from self-pity to mad romanticism and with Johnny Marr providing the best backing possible with his prodigiously delicate guitars. (Honorio)

Place in the 1986 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 3

#4

Talking Heads - Remain In Light (1980)

Score: 1670 points

Biggest fans:
Andre (#1), Michel (#2), Honorio (#5), Greg (#5), otisredding (#7)

Comments:
The confluence of the angular pop of their first offerings and their peculiar brand of cold-funk created this groundbreaking work of art. Influences of world music, synth-pop, goth rock and ambient music (courtesy of producer Brian Eno) added more interesting textures to the mix. Music for dancing with your brain. (Honorio)

Place in the 1980 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 6

#3

Prince - Sign 'O' The Times (1987)

Score: 1696 points

Biggest fans:
Harold Wexler (#2), Toni (#2), Nicolas (#4), Rocky Raccoon (#4), BillAdama (#5), Sonofsamiam (#5)

Comments:
One of the few perfect double albums in the history of pop music. Every song could be a single. (Nicolas)
After years helping to develop the '80s style of pop-funk, Prince abandoned all the commercial interests to make an all timeless album. From minimalistic (Sign O' the Times) to the most grandiloquent (The Cross), he showed 16 different ways of making grove based on all the black music styles (and other genres either!). Lighter (Adore) or sexiest than never (Slow Love) R&B; enchanting romantic pop (Starfish and Coffee); flerts with jazz (The Ballad of Dorothy Parker) and with hip hop (Housequake); funk of primer quality (It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, Srange Relationship); dancing guitar-synthesizer pop (I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man); and also the already known Prince's style of music (U Got the Look). Delightful. (Toni)
A succulent banquet of contemporary music, displaying a varied amount of delicacies cooked with inventiveness, craft and inspiration. (Honorio)

Place in the 1987 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 2

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

I'll leave the last two for tomorrow morning.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

My two favorite albums of the 80's at 4 and 7, that's alright.

Doolittle and Purple Rain left. Nice combo to ever perform together ...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

There was nothing quite like Prince in the 80s :) For a few weeks even "Around The World In A Day" was the best album ever made...

"Doolittle" is still good.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Way to go Prince! Given the love for SOTT and PR, I'm surprised that 1999 didn't fare better. It's a better album!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

These polls are a bit like reliving music history -- with the added bonus of having the chance to listen to stuff you didn't pay attention to back then (well, as the polls move back in time, increasingly fewer of us will have paid any attention to the majority of albums when they first came out). Enjoyable ride, Stephan!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

i'm so happy for Rain Dogs (especially to hear that a few people were converted)

and for Prince as well. Moonbeam, i guess the reason why 1999 is not so high is that it is too funky, while the other two are inspired by a variety of styles.

Before I discovered this site, I was very reluctant about '80s music with all the prejudices you can expect from a roots oriented music fan : the synthetizers, the cold sound, the unexpressive voices. I went back on that, except for the Smiths. I still can't get into their music except for a few songs (There Is A Light, Girlfriend In A Coma). I really tried, but couldn't, even if 2 of my best correlated partners (and friends)on this forum, Honorio and Greg, are big fans.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Jeff Buckley - "the 60's are bullshit, the 70's almost big, big bullshit, the 80's - I don't even need to tell you - except for The Smiths maybe"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Stephan said: these changes gave us a new #1
So… if after recounting the Moonbeam (And other people)votes the #1 changed, maybe “Purple Rain” was the new #1? Well, “Doolittle” was higher on my list, but “Purple..” is an excellent choice for #1.
Suspense, suspense…

About Nicolas & The Smiths, no problem. As I said sometimes, Morrissey is a polarizing artist, you love him or you hate him, and I can perfectly understand the reasons of the second group. Anyway it’s great that you approached to the 80s music trying to forget the usual prejudices and you truly enjoyed that trip. That's the greatness of this forum (and forums in general): share the joys and pains of music.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

I'm feeling good that my Purple Rain prediction is going to come true. But I have inside information.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Moonbeam, for sure you are the expert on Prince, but after all your praise for 1999 I have tried again but always failed (by Prince measures). If I want funky Prince I go to "Dirty Mind", which is much more to the point.

My Prince positions in this poll:
#1 Purple Rain
#9 Dirty Mind
#13 Sign O the Times
#30 Parade
#68 1999

Go Purple Rain!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Sorry for being completely self-centered, but I looked at my positions for all other artists with at least three albums in the poll, and couldn't resist posting.

Remember: I like almost all of the albums in this poll, but some move me more than others.

#57 Imperial Bedroom

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

#2

Prince - Purple Rain (1984)

Score: 1799 points

Biggest fans:
Sonofsamiam (#1), Henrik (#1), Rocky Raccoon (#1), Nicolas (#3), otisredding (#5), Midaso (#5), Jonah (#5), Greg Rumpff (#5)

Comments:
Although a lot of his fans prefer 1999, I agree with AM that Purple Rain us Prince's best album. Why ? Because it is his most consistent and cohesive album, with this pop-funk crossover that became his signature. Because of its intensity (just check out the first song), and because of the title track and "When Doves Cry". (Nicolas)
Prince's Thriller (a much more freak one, for sure). Not his best album, but still an incredible collection of inspired songs which, don't know why, give me always a scientific fiction movie climate while listening to it, although I have never watched the real "Purple Rain" film, and have no idea of what its about. (Toni)
Prince went straight to the top with “Purple Rain”, following the successful path he was traveling with “1999”. He approached to classic rock (he built his own stairway to heaven with the title track) gaining a massive audience mainly white. But in fact he continued doing the best black music possible, solidly founded on funk and soul. (Honorio)

Place in the 1984 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 9

#1

Pixies - Doolittle (1989)

Score: 1812 points

Biggest fans:
Fred (#1), Jonah (#2), Michel (#3), Harold Wexler (#3), Midaso (#3)

Comments:
Indie rock can’t get better. The loud-quiet-loud dynamics, the noisy guitars and the bizarre lyrical themes (mutilation, bleeding, “Un chien andalou” were still here, but the band showed in their second full-length album a complete command for pop hooks, with special mention to Kim Deal, to her melodic bass lines and to her delicious backing vocals. (Honorio)

Place in the 1989 poll: 1

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 12

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

And there we have it. Prince did indeed get the top spot for a while, but then I realized I completely fucked up Mo's list, which brought Doolittle back to #1.

Hope you all enjoyed the trip.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Well, there was no surprise at the end, but the list has been (as usual) excellent. Many thanks, Stephan.
Henrik, we share the same #100, “New Day Rising”, the longest 40 minutes ever.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Thanks Stephan! Great show!!!

Will you post any correlations in this thread, or will we see them in the spreadsheet? If you've got Excel 2007, I just found that it has an automatic cell-colouring function.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Damn, I just colored them all manually.

I hope I did these correlation things correctly. Well, here's the 10 biggest (and a few of the smallest) correlations:

Rocky Raccoon and Harold Wexler: 0,68
Andre and Honorio: 0,56
Stephan and Honorio: 0,53
tremolo and Netjade: 0,49
tremolo and Sonofsamiam: 0,48
Sonofsamiam and Netjade: 0,47
Fred and Netjade: 0,42
Greg and Midaso: 0,42
Stephan and Andre: 0,41
Stephan and Greg: 0,41

...

Stephan and Netjade: -0,20
John and Netjade: -0,23
Moonbeam and Adrian -0,25
Fred And Greg Rumpff: -0,25
Greg Rumpff and tremolo: -0,27
Greg Rumpff and Netjade: -0,44

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Smallest being most negative.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Thanks Stephan.

Viva la música y viva los años 80

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

You're right Toni, "Purple Rain" is Prince's "Thriller". Except with a lot of risk-taking artistically. Michael brilliantly gave to the people what they expected (in the Motown tradition, artistic excellence, innovation but with a crossover objective), whereas Prince did the same but with more audacity.
The result was nevertheless a commercial success.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Bedankt, Stephan!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

At least I got my no. 1 album right! :)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

The 70s should be REAL interresting!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

É isso aí, Stephan!
Awesome list, with a lot of great surprises. Never would expect Purple Rain to be the second!

And there's still the songs poll, which promise to be even more interesting!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Great stuff and very fine work Stephan, was hoping Prince would take it in the end, but Doolittle manages to still sound great.

Can't wait for the Songs Poll!

And then...bring on the '70s!!!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

I will launch the 70s poll on February, be patient ^^
Maybe I should try right now to prepare an excel sheet as easy to compile as possible...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

For an entire year, I have stayed out of the 80's poll for the simple reason that my knowledge of acclaimed 80's albums is severely lacking. I'm embarrassed about how few of the albums on the list I have listened to. (I'm pretty good with unacclaimed 80's music, though... I know all the steps to the Safety Dance.)

I just wanted to write in and say thank you to all of you (and particularly Stephan) for compiling a wonderful list, which I have been monitoring from afar. There is lots in there for me to sample. And a great final 2: My respect for the Pixies has grown over the past year, and I have been listening to Purple Rain a lot in the last couple of months. (It was in my all-time top-50, and has clawed well into the top-25 recently.) Kudos to all of you.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Funny because Doolittle is # 1 in only one individual list.
It's the most consensual album.
Personally I don't really get it. Don't see why it is so much acclaimed.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Again, a great list. I just wish that Harold guy would quit copying me all the time. lol.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

yes, thank you Stephan
The song list will be great too

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Henrik, Dirty Mind is a fabulous album too, but it lacks the depth and studio mastery that 1999 has in spades.

Nicolas brings up a good point- I tend to value albums that are more cohesive and expand upon a singular kind of sound more than I do albums that throw in everything but the kitchen sink. That synthetic, ice-cold synth funk/rock served up neon blue from the studio with lyrics that depict the hunger on a spiritual, emotional, and fun level does it for me every time. Also, I believe that 1999 captures the essence of Prince better than any other album, and is arguably the main album that features the least input from other people- I'm not counting The Truth or One Nite Alone.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

For me Purple Rain vs Sign Of The Times is a tough comparison. I think When Doves Cry is the best song between them, but Sign has more good songs, but also more less good songs.

Maybe I have to re-listen to Seventeen Seconds, but it just seems to lose me every time I listen to it.

1999 I think of as more an album with great singles than a great album.

Where did I put Rain Dogs on my list? I expected to see myself as a 'biggest fan'.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Sorry, Rocky.

Also sorry I haven't had a chance to comment before now. I wanted to commend Stephan for taking charge of this and doing such a great job.

It -is- fascinating that DOOLITTLE is #1 despite not topping -anyone's- individual list. So, it isn't anyone's VERY favorite '80s album, but (almost) everyone loves it.

There definitely seems to be a polarity regarding the music of the Eighties that I don't think exists for any other decade. Part of that is due, I think, to that overly bright, sterile "big production" sound common to all too many records from the decade. Example: I just picked up Prefab Sprout's FROM LANGLEY PARK TO MEMPHIS, and despite my appreciation for Paddy McAloon's songcraft found parts of it very difficult to listen to because of that horribly dated production style. (I have some problems with McAloon's look-how-suave-and-clever-I-am writing as well, but that's another issue.)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

And more belated comments:

#73 Madonna - Like A Prayer (1989)- While I don't love it as much as my "biggest fan" status suggests, it probably is one of my 2 favorite Madonna albums along with RAY OF LIGHT.

#62 Pretenders - Pretenders (1980- I guess I'm not hearing what others hear. Most of this album is "meh" to my ears. I'll have to give it another try sometime.

#58 Richard & Linda Thompson - Shoot Out The Lights (1982)- My #25 is kinda unrepresentative..have only heard this album twice all the way through but I did like it. Call it the "my FAVORITE stuff missed the poll" effect again.

#55 Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1983)- My #21 rank was based on singles. I didn't get a chance to listen all the way through before submitting the poll although the album is now in my work playlist so I'll be ready for next go-round.

#54 Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (1988)-Considering my #13 rank, I guess I should take the plunge and actually BUY this one, huh?

#47 Kraftwerk- This actually has an error, Stephan. I should be listed at #62 on my list...not #6. I've never actually heard this one in its entirety.

#46 AC/DC - Back In Black (1980)-This wouldn't REALLY be in my 80s top 10. But it is my favorite AC/DC album.

#37 Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love (1985)-Another album I don't "get" in spite of loving "Running Up that Hill".

#31 R.E.M. - Green (1980)- This one's OK but I honestly vastly prefer OUT OF TIME.

#22 Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A. (1984)- This was my #1 on my list but NOT my real favorite 80s album...since I don't actually OWN it! I've only discovered it over the past 2 years but I like darn near every track on the thing. Maybe I can buy this when I pick up that Chapman album.

#21 The Cure - Disintegration (1989)- My favorite Cure album.

#20 The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy (1985)- Just now listening to all this. My thought is I would like the band if they pushed the vocals up in the mix. I don't mind the noisy feedback...but I'd like to not have to "fight" to hear the words.

#18 Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (1982)- My #11 placement might be a bit high due to the freshness of just hearing it but it is really good. I like it nearly as well as BORN IN THE U.S.A. We'll see what time, and more listens, does to my opinion.

#17 U2 - The Joshua Tree (1987)- Actually had this at #4 but I'm not sure if that will make much difference in the rankings. My favorite U2 album.

#16 Michael Jackson - Thriller (1982)- Probably suffers a bit from the fallout of his personal life. GREAT album.

Only 1 song from my top 10 hasn't been mentioned yet unless I missed it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums of the 1980s Results

Regarding Harold's last comment about Doolittle, I made a very last minute change moving that album from #1 to #2. I have felt uncomfortable keeping that record at the top spot for a while, because while it's nearly a perfect collection of songs, it didn't scream out RECORD OF THE EIGHTIES for me. Its release in 1989 and the indie-grunge movement it sparkled ties it too much to all the great music of the early 90s and beyond. Kudos to Doolittle for being too cool and unique to fit into it's historical release date, but throwing that album at #1 seemed to neglect everything before it.

I have loved R.E.M.'s Green for a long while though because it served as the culmination of the early R.E.M. sound into a diverse and perfectly sequenced album experience. I have been given a hard lesson in the quality of 80s music with this forum poll, but for a while it seemed that while the decade was littered with gems of pop singles, the only bridge between the musical wasteland of 1981-1988 (Daydream Nation) were a short list that prominently included R.E.M. and Prince. There are much more to add to that list now (Sonic Youth and New Order, take a bow), but R.E.M. deserved to be on top.

D'Oh!

If I had paid attention and taken part in this particular poll, Moonbeam, we could have had LAP ranked a little bit higher. :)
