Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

As a variation I thought it would interesting to share my most played songs added to my master playlist since January 1, 2008.

These are the fast climbers that didn't have the advantage of extra time on the playlist to get old.

If you have iTunes just sort your playlist by the "Date Added" category and create a new playlist containing all songs added this year.

Then sort that playlist by play count and see what comes up!

This isn't just new songs (released in 2008) but any songs you've come across in the past year.

1. (11 plays) Prince - Dirty Mind (at a rate of almost one pay per month, I seem to be craving these early Prince licks constantly)

2. (10 plays) The National - Fake Empire

3. (9 plays) Funkadelic - Can You Get To That
The National - Start a War
Radiohead - House of Cards

4. (8 plays) Animal Collective - Winter Wonder Land
M.I.A. - XR2
The Monks - Complication
The National - Ada
The White Stripes - 300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues

5. (7 plays)

Animal Collective - Unsolved Mysteries
Ben E. King - Spanish Harlem
The Crystals - Uptown
John Lennon - God
Joy Division - Means To An End
The Knife - Heartbeats
Liars - Houseclouds
Micheal Andrews & Gary Jules - Mad World
The Replacements - I Will Dare
The Ronnettes - Keep On Dancing
Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs - Wolly Bully
Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Burkin - Je t'aime moi non plus
The Shins - Kissing The Lipless
Talking Heads - Take Me To The River
!!! - Must Be The Moon
!!! - Sweet Life

Re: Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

1. Alphabeat - Fascination (90)
2. Bruce Springsteen - Meeting Across the River (80)
3. The Killers - Sam's Town (70) How the first 3 turned out all nice and even that way I do not know.
4. Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat (69)
5. Neutral Milk Hotel - Untitled (68)
6. Kanye West - Streetlights (66)
7. Cat Power - Sea of Love (57)
8. Lush - De-Luxe (56)
9. Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (54)
10. Camille - Le Festin (53)

Only one song from that list came out in 2008.

Re: Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

I didn't contribute to the first one, so I will include my all-time most played too.

All-time:

1. The Beatles - Get Back (43)
2. The Beatles - Michelle (39)
3. Van Halen - Eruption (38)
4. The Beatles - Revolution (37)
5. Cream - Crossroads (31)
T6. The Beatles - Something (30)
T6. The Beatles - Yesterday (30)
T6. The Beatles - Let It Be (30)
T6. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - (30)
T6. The Who - My Generation

#'s 5 and 6 are among my favorites. The way Jack Bruce bowls over Clapton during the solo on Crossroads is probably my favorite bass-player moment ever. I have no idea why #'s 3 and 9 showed up so much, I guess it's because they are both short, sweet and to the point. Eruption is really self-indulgent though; it's music to be amazed by. Sgt. Pepper's, oh I don't know, I've started listening to Sgt. Pepper's so much, maybe I don't always get all the way through it. Great album, bad song.

Now for songs added in the past year:

1. Oasis - Wonderwall (16, soon to be 17)
2. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion (14)
T3. The Beach Boys - Here Today (12)
T3. Lupe Fiasco - Superstar (12)
T5. Daft Punk - Around The World (11)
T5. Foo Fighters - The Pretender (11)
T5. The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (11)
T5. Lit - My Own Worst Enemy (11)
T5. The Smiths - This Charming Man (11)
T10. The Beach Boys - Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) (10)
T10. Daft Punk - Digital Love (10)
T10. The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five (10)
T10. Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (10)
T10. Radiohead - Karma Police (10)

Most of these I checked out due to their high AM rating!

Re: Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

My list is a bit misleading, since I didn't add "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" to my iTunes until this year...

So...

1. Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 (59)
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (31)
3. Neutral Milk Hotel - The King Of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1 (28)
4. The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums (28)
5. Neutral Milk Hotel - Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 (27)
6. Mojave 3 - In Love With A View (26)
7. Neutral Milk Hotel - Two-Headed Boy (26)
8. Neutral Milk Hotel - The King Of Carrot Flowers, Pts. 2& 3 (25)
9. Neutral Milk Hotel - Ghost (25)
10. The Stone Roses - Waterfall (25)

Re: Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

In The Aeroplane must have really grown on you, Penguin!

Personally, I have a lot of trouble chopping up that album into separate pieces and leaving the songs to the mercy of the iTunes shuffle. In particular, I absolutely cannot listen to Ghost, with the incredible Untitled coda. The transition from Ghost to that is probably one of my favorite 10 musical moments of all time.

Re: Fun with Playlist and Play Counts (2008 edition)

1. Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon (31)
2. The Hold Steady - Sequestered in Memphis (30)
3. Echo & The Bunnymen - Silver (28)
4. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Albert Goes West (22)
5. Rihanna - Umbrella (22)
6. Echo & the Bunnymen - My Kingdom (21)
7. The Jam - Going Underground (21)
8. R.E.M. - (Don't Go Back to) Rockville (21)
9. DeVotchKa - The Clockwise Witness (20)
10. Echo & the Bunnymen - The Cutter (19)
11. The Hold Steady - Magazines (19)
12. Cafe Tacuba - 53100 (18)
13. Curtis Mayfield - Move on Up (18)
14. Echo & the Bunnymen - Seven Seas (18)
15. Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (18)
16. Klaxons - Golden Skans (17)
17. Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World (17)
18. Cafe Tacuba - Volver a Comenzar (16)
19. Echo & The Bunnymen - Nocturnal me (16)
20. Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life (16)
21. New Order - Crystal (16)
22. Echo & the Bunnymen - Crystal Days (15)
23. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive (15)
24. Okkervil River - Unless It Kicks (15)
25. Cafe Tacuba - Tengo Todo (14)

A slightly more interesting list I guess. Echo and the Bunnymen and Cafe Tacuba go down as my best two discoveries of the past year.
