FAVOURITE COMPILATION:THE ROLLING STONES “Singles Collection : The London Years”

My favourite Spanish song of 1989: La Frontera’s "El límite"

Classic rock. When the last sparkles of the “movida” went out and before the indie scene broke during the early 90s, the Spanish music scene of the late 80s became much less interesting (except for the new flamenco bands as Pata Negra or Ketama). Many bands (including Rubber, my band at that time) were influenced by American classic rock, coming from 80s revival bands like Smithereens or Green on Red or from true classics that experienced a kind of resurrection at the end of the decade like Bob Dylan or Neil Young. One of these Spanish-American bands were La Frontera (The Border) that dressed as if they were acting in a Sergio Leone spaghetti-western movie and played a country-rockabilly style during their first three albums. Their fourth album, “Rosa de los vientos” (“Wind Rose”), found them instead trying to achieve a more classic sound, reaching with that move a massive success in Spain at the time. The band leader Javier Andreu for Efe Eme in 2005: “The “Wind Rose” was the definitive album. It was a surprise, and although we were criticised for a more pop-oriented sound, the election of Jesús Gómez as the producer was not predetermined for that (… We didn’t expect yet that smash hit with our four album”.
The song selected is “El límite” (“The Limit” or “The Border”), a song that Andreu wrote about José Battaglio that just left the band after co-writing with Andreu almost every song from the first three albums. Andreu in 2006: “I was feeling alone and paralyzed from pure vertigo”. He took the lyrics for the chorus from a passage of the New Testament: “I always though about the Bible as a good adventure book where you can find good titles for rock songs”. And, well, that’s my selection from a not particularly good year for Spanish music.

EL LÍMITE
Composer: Javier Andreu
Performer: LA FRONTERA
First release: 1989 (“Rosa de los vientos” album)
Length: 4’38”

Escucha bien, mi viejo amigo,
no sé si recordarás
aquellos tiempos ahora perdidos

THE BORDER

Listen to me, my old friend,
I don’t know if you remember
those wasted times
down the streets of this town.

We read together forbidden books,
we thought that nothing could change us,
we always lived waiting for a sign.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

It’s hard to be so dejected,
without feeling any pain,
it’s like plunging a dagger
deeply into the heart.

Listen to me, my old friend,
I never forgot our friendship.
Life is only a game,
you must bet if you want to win.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

It’s not difficult to find
the paradise in the shadows.
Fortune comes in a ship
with no course and no captain.

Listen to me, my old friend,
if someday we meet again
I only hope that everything will be
just like yesterday.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

At the border of good (the border of good),
at the border of evil (the border of evil).
I’ll wait for you
at the border of good and evil.

I don’t why merely two weeks ago I found the original video in you tube and now it’s removed. Anyway this is a live version from 1992 quite true to the original:

Great update by the way.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

I hope I'm not too late. It's not yet midnight here. Can't believe I never got around to listening to Bob Mould (Workbook), Fugazi (13 Songs), New Order (Technique), and lots of other stuff quite possibly worthy of a hearing. Once again, I'll whine that ordering those that I did get around to listening to is hard, because once again I've discovered a lot of surprisingly good music. The '80s have a much undeserved reputation as a musical wasteland. A lot of good music from old lions. A lot of good music from (then) young lions, some of whom burned out much too quickly (sorry for the mixed metaphor--though if Blake can have a tiger burning bright, why can't I have a lion?).

1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
2. Nirvana - Bleach
3. Pixies - Doolittle
4. Lou Reed - New York
5. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
6. De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
7. Bob Dylan - Oh, Mercy
8. Neil Young - Freedom
9. Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Might not make a VAST difference, Stephan, but I notice Henley's END OF THE INNOCENCE album appears twice in that spreadsheet.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Thanks for the results, Stephan. All decent qualifiers, I would say.

One little correction: I did not vote for Bolt Thrower, but gave the 12 points to David Byrne's Rei Momo. But as usual without any consequences ...

Looking forward to vote for the ultimate 100!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Thanks for the results Stephan.

Four songs that I voted are in positions 11-14 and
five albums in positions 12-16.

One correction: I noticed that Sepultura's album is twice in the sheet (Vgrd and Ze voted it).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Just won '3 Feet High And Rising' in an auction yesterday - slightly too late for the '89 poll but at least I'll have it for the finale.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Did I violate some criterion for inclusion, because I don't see my votes in the final tabulation? I don't think it was that I was too late, because Moonbeam's and Ze's lists counted.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Never mind. I see that my votes are listed under "Rocky Raccoon" (who's name shows up twice).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

I thought a second that Bleach would have made to top 10 (because it was Mike's #2) but no. Still my albums places are 12-16.

Another correction:
Jon Gibson's Heart and Soul have 0 points. I noticed that it was #2 at Greg Rumpffs list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Ah, more than a few mistakes I see. Most of them are either caused by the last-minute inclusion of Ze's list (I was ready to post them when I saw his list) or because of my hurry to get this one up as soon as possible so I can start on the finale. My bad.

All changes edited.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Don't feel too bad about the mistakes. We all make them. Like my writing "who's" for "whose."

Anyway, many thanks to you for running the poll!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Do you have a spreadsheet with all 100 qualifiers for the final poll? I want to get an early jump on anything in I might not have heard that I might want to.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Luckily it doesn't make a difference to the top 10, but my songs weren't listed. "Epic" and "Personal Jesus" come really close, though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Damn, that's a big one. Sorry Rocky. Edited the list.

BillAdama: The list will be posted shortly, I just wanted to make sure there are no more mistakes in this one first.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

Great work, Stephan! Will there be any changes from the 90s poll to the scoring system in the 80s poll?

I don't think the last change (with Rocky Raccoon's songs) has been uploaded.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1989

OK, forget about my question. I hadn't seen your new threads about this.
