Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

The year I was born, 1988, features some changes. The lists are now required to be in this format to save me a little time:

Rank) Artist - Album/Song

If possible, handing your lists in in an Excel file along with posting them in this topic would be ideal. You can send the lists to 1988[at]neoptolemos[dot]com.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of October. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 1988 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1988 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Stephan, you should probably require a format for artists as well. Suggestion:

Artists: firstname secondname
(e.g. "Tracy Chapman" and not "Chapman, Tracy")
Bands with "The" in the name: name, The
(e.g. "Church, The" and not "The Church")

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

You're absolutely right. The format of the artist names should be: First-name Second-name (i.e. Bob Dylan) and for bands with The in the name, simply put the The in front of the band (i.e. The Who). No Who, The, please.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Will do. Formatting made Beatles Survivor a lot easier to compile. Good luck getting everybody to comply!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

hi, Steph, sudden question: was (one of) my (somewhat countless ) mail attempts actually successful? it's 1988@neoptolemos, isn't it..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Disadvantage of this format is, that you need to disable the smilies to avoid that 8) will show differently. But that's not a real problem, I will post just like that and send you the Excel file as well.

So, it's 'The The', not 'The, The', right? :-)

But first it's listening time again, my votes will come much later ...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

"1988, I started to earn money."

haha... I remember that year being thrown off of a comic convention for having sneaked in the "Heavy Metal" movie, while only 8 years old... that melting "loknared" astronaut dad scene scared me to death, but after it... ye know, that blonde bitch who took her clothes off for that bald headed taxi nerd... jeeez, what a lousy awesome geek movie it actually was after all...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

great... now that I'm watching that movie again, he ISN'T bald headed and she ISN'T blonde... but geek actually pours out of it all over again...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

yeah... but the protagonists of the second episode happened to be that way... boy, this sucks... let's watch Short Circuit!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Stephan, if we format it correctly do we have to send you a spreadsheet? Or if we send you a SS do we have to post at all? It seems like you are asking a lot to do both even though I'll do it if that's what you need.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Sorry for the confusion everyone.

Netjade: Yes, that's the correct email address, and no, I did not receive any emails. Not your fault though, I set something up wrong. It should work now.

John: The Excel file is optional, it'll save me a little time but not that much. Up to you really.

Andre: The The. ;)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

My Entry at no. 2, Happy Mondays - WFL (Think About The Future) is from 1989. Please, remove it.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Excel file is no longer necessary, I've found a reasonably fast method already. Sorry for all the confusion. Please, do still use the format I suggested though.

1) The Pixies – SURFER ROSA
2) Sonic Youth – DAYDREAM NATION
3) Public Enemy – IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK
4) R.E.M. – GREEN

7) Sonic Youth – “Silver Rocket”
8) Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock – “It Takes Two”
9) Metallica – “One”
10) The Pixies – “Gigantic”

This was harder than I was expecting. The top three albums are all very high on my all-time top 100, but they're the only ones from that year that I listen to on a regular basis. Except for those three - which I fully expect to end up as the overall top three for the year, as they are on AM - '88 turns out to be more of a "song year" for me.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

I was wondering
Is Guns n Roses lies eligible ?

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: JACQUES BREL “Quinze ans d’amour”

My favourite Spanish song of 1988: Pata Negra’s "Pasa la vida"

Pata Negra, black hoof, defines the highest quality Iberian ham because of the darker hoofs of the Iberian pigs (by the way, everyone of you should taste al least once this Pata Negra ham, better accompanied by bread with tomato-spread Catalonian-style and a glass of Ribera del Duero red wine). And this Spanish expression extends to mean “the very best”, everything that it’s first-class. So Pata Negra was obviously a quite arrogant way of naming a band.
Was that arrogance justified? The band was formed by two gipsy brothers, the guitar virtuoso Raimundo Amador and the cheeky singer Rafael Amador that showed from early stages an open minded approach. They knew deeply the clues of the pure flamenco but they always wanted to venture in different styles (the favourite guitar players of Raimundo are Diego del Gastor, Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix) so they boarded into the groundbreaking band Veneno. After the disbanding of Veneno the two brothers began a career as Pata Negra integrating naturally and fluidly elements from flamenco, jazz and blues. They released 3 good albums, “Pata Negra” (1981), “Rock Gitano” (“Gipsy Rock”, 1982), “Guitarras callejeras” (“Stray Guitars”, 1986) before their masterpiece, “Blues de la frontera” (“Blues from the Border”). Sadly the battle of egos within the brothers made this album the last one, although Rafael kept the name and released two other albums not as interesting as the previous ones. Anyway the swan song of the brothers was an awesome album, simultaneously cornerstone of the “new flamenco” and the “gipsy rock”, tremendously influential in flamenco musicians of the next decades. Joan Pons for Rockdelux: “The blues as the nature, as metaphor, was the unifying sense of an album that bordered the borders of every music style (… The idea of the border, a place of meeting and exchange, got symbolism too. Flamenco was getting beyond its own margins. The barrier between rock and flamenco audiences was definitely pulled up”
The song selected from this album is “Pasa la vida” (“Life Goes By”), in which Pata Negra transformed a “sevillana” by Romero San Juan into a smoky jazz number but played, of course, with Spanish guitars. The mastery guitar playing of Raimundo and the passionate singing of Rafael are outstanding, but the highlights here are the heartfelt lyrics about a life gone by when “you haven’t noticed that you have lived”, about arrogance that comes and glory that slips away. But that’s not true. Some of us will always remember their glory days.

PASA LA VIDA
Composers: Garrido López / Romero San Juan
Performer: PATA NEGRA
First release: 1988 (“Blues de la frontera” album)
Length: 3’47”

Pasa la vida, pasa la vida.
Pasa la vida
y no has notado que has vivido cuando
pasa la vida.
Y no has notado que has vivido cuando
pasa la vida.

Pasa la vida,
tus ilusiones y tus bellos sueños
todo se olvida.
Tus ilusiones y tus bellos sueños
todo se olvida.

Pasa la vida,
igual que pasa la corriente
cuando un río busca el mar,
y yo camino indiferente
donde me quiera llevar.

Pasa la gloria, pasa la gloria.
Pasa la gloria,
nos ciega la soberbia pero un día
pasa la gloria.
Nos ciega la soberbia pero un día
pasa la gloria.

Y pasa la gloria,
y ves que de tu obra ya no queda
ni la memoria.
Y ves que de tu obra ya no queda
ni en la memoria.

Y pasa la vida,
igual que pasa la corriente
cuando un río busca el mar,
y yo camino indiferente
donde me quiera llevar.

LIFE GOES BY

Life goes by, life goes by.
Life goes by
and you haven’t noticed that you have lived
when life goes by.
And you haven’t noticed that you have lived
when life goes by.

Life goes by,
your illusions and your beautiful dreams,
all is forgotten.
Your illusions and your beautiful dreams,
all is forgotten.

Life goes by
like the stream flows
when a river seeks the sea,
and I walk in indifference
where it wants to take me.

Glory passes by, glory passes by.
Glory passes by,
arrogance blinds us but one day
glory passes by.
Arrogance blinds us but one day
glory passes by.

Glory passes by,
and you see that your opus no longer remains
even in memory.
And you see that your opus no longer remains
even in memory.

Life goes by
like the stream flows
when a river seeks the sea,
and I walk in indifference
where it wants to take me.

If someone cares, the other Spanish songs in my list are:
- Vente pa Madrid: the Songhai team having real fun on stage, just listen to Danny Thompson joining the jaleo shouting: “Marcelo!”.
- Camarón: the Amador brothers borrowed the chord sequence of Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” as the basis for their homage to the mythical cantaor Camarón.
- La fuerza del destino: the successful synth-pop trio Mecano in a video-clip that features the very first appearance of a cute Penelope Cruz. She was only fifteen then and soon after began a relationship with the band leader Nacho Cano. Smart guy, isn’t it?
- Africa: the unsuspected perfect connection between Mali and Andalucia.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Sorry, I don't have access to Excel right now.

Unfortunately, I did even less well at listening widely this month/year than usual. Biggest regrets: Not getting to listen to 1988's Luncinda Williams, My Bloody Valentine, or Steve Earle. Another regret: That NWA didn't cut off about half the tracks from Straight Outta Compton to make what would have been a hell of an EP. Also I regret that the damned thing's so misogynistic.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Hey Stephan, you appear to have left off my 50 points for Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

They were counted, they just ended up in John's list for some reason. Updated the file.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Nick Caves Mercy Seat should be higher. It's twice in the list (# 8 and also # 37 (with my 50 points and Midaso's 14 points)).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

"You know it!" was just a comment from me, Stephan! Roxette's awesome 1988 album is simply called Look Sharp!

I like how Prince's Lovesexy made the top 20. It's his most underrated album, in my opinion, and definitely my second favorite.

I'm also happy to see "Anna Stesia" claim the top song of '88 for Prince. I think if more people heard it, it would definitely crack the top 10- its power is unrelenting.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Here's my favorite live performance of "Anna Stesia". The most prevalent messages of Prince's music are all encapsulated in this brilliant song, in which he struggles with the internal battle of flesh vs. spirit, culminating with the acknowledgment that closeness to God is the path to his ultimate happiness. It really resonates, particularly given a cursory glance at what was happening in his life at the time. An all-embracing, all-encompassing message of the triumph of spirituality over dejected solitude.

Anyway, enjoy!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

Sorry Stephan but I’ve found that the 9 points that I gave to “Songhai” ended in John Hiatt’s “Slow Turning”. So John Hiatt goes from position #29 to #35 and Ketama goes from #78 (tied with other 5) to #57 (tied with other 5 too). I’ve tried to correct it myself but I couldn’t save the changes (and I don’t know why).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1988

I'm really surprised Jane's Addiction and Nick Cave didn't make it.

Anything in the top 17 probably would have made it in any other year in the 80s.

Kind of like how there are going to be a lot of albums that make it in 1976 that wouldn't have even made top 20 in 1971, 1975, or 1977.
