MOVING UP: Charles Mingus, James Brown, Stan Getz, Roy Orbison, The Drifters, Sam Cooke.

NEW TO THE LIST: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Ronettes, The Kingsmen, The Crystals, Joao Gilberto.

FELL OFF THE LIST: Clifford Brown, John Lee Hooker.

BUBBLING UNDER: Jackie Wilson, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Lloyd Price, The Shadows, The Carter Family.

Almost all of this year’s changes are in the top half of the list; apart from the slightly noteworthy debut of a certain group at the top of the list, there are four other debuts in the top 25, plus big jumps for James Brown and Stan Getz.

Voting begins August 26. Discussion begins now.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

I think the real question is; do you think The Beatles and Bob Dylan already belong in the HoA. I'm leaning towards waiting another year for both of them, although Dylan will make an appearance in my top 10.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

No way for Dylan. Freewheelin' isn't good enough for a 1st ballot entry and his debut kind of stinks unless you're a big traditional folk fan. Probably for the Beatles. I don't like Please, Please Me enough to put them in but there's too much good stuff on With the Beatles to leave them out and those singles are legendary.

Hopefully Mingus gets in this round now that Black Saint is eligible. The Everly Brothers don't have anything new but maybe they'll get in before the big dogs start appearing. I don't think Bill Evans has a chance.

I don't think I can vote for Stan Getz off an album that I kind of like and a song I really like. Gilberto is the reason I like that song anyway and not the one that's in the top 50 for this year.

However, I'm going to have to think about Roy Orbison getting in based on one song, In Dreams since it's one of my all-time favorites. There really isn't too much of his other than that song that I like so this would probably be the only year that he appears on my list since others would definitely trump him in the upcoming years.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

I would be happy if the top 4 on the list above are inducted. I think Bill Monroe's shot is over. He came soooo close.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

I'll wait with Dylan. I'm no big fan of his earliest stuff. It'll be quite hard waiting with The Beatles, though, but I'm not sure they'll get my top vote.

Shame about Bill Monroe. I think he had his chance last year, and that'll be hard for him now. Eventually, maybe even now, I have to move him down from the first place.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

Freewheelin' is certainly great, and all 4 songs on AM are fantastic I think. Still, there are 6 artists who deserve to be inducted more right now, so I think Dylan will only come in 7th.

I really don't like the early Beatles stuff, so I don't think I'll be voting for them until after 1966. Then again, they probably don't need my vote.

I'm kinda hoping for some extra Woody Guthrie votes, since this is his last chance, but I'm afraid it's too late. Charles Mingus and Roy Orbison are definitely going to move up on my list this year by the way.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

Point of information for anyone still interested in the “realist/idealist” debate: obviously, the Beatles were a big deal in the UK from at least summer 1963. And the US? I have read that American teenagers en masse really became aware of the Beatles in the school holiday between Christmas of ’63 and New Year’s…their famous Ed Sullivan appearance was in February ’64. I don’t know if this affects anyone’s thinking about them, but our 1/1/64 vote comes right in the middle of the first wave of American Beatlemania...although they're clearly not what they will be in the US six weeks from now.

I’m thinking about giving them my last ballot spot this time (i.e., #4 in my top 10)…I’m already on record as liking their early stuff, although perhaps that’s true of most of the people who are already HOA voters. Dylan might make my ballot—it’s borderline—but I’m guessing he won’t get in for another couple of years.

Oh, and I wouldn’t give up on Monroe and Guthrie…they’ve been doing very well in the voting. Even if they don’t make the HOA in the next couple of elections, they could still sneak in down the road—maybe after 1974 or so.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

monroe and guthrie will be topping my list til they get in...i probably won't vote for the beatles or dylan until '67...too many early folks i still want to see get in

backstagewise, do you think it's time for bacharach and/or spector yet?

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

Another backstager (for down the line) is Jerry Wexler, who recently passed away.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

Yeah, I wondered last round when I voted for Ahmet Ertegun whether I should have made Ertegun and Wexler a two-fer. Can I get a ruling on this from the judges?

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

I’m practicing the “idealistic” approach so far, I mean, I’m voting and making my comments as if it was the selected year. But, since I’m choosing a Top5 for the number 1 on my list and a Top 3 for the first 5, in fact I’m waiting to put at the top of my list an artist when he/she/they released their “masterpiece” in my opinion. So, with an idealistic approach it would be the time to put The Beatles at the top yet (or next year anyway) because at the time they were perceived as groundbreaking and “important”. But, as everyone knows now, their best work was still to come. But if I wait till 1968 to put The Beatles on top I won’t be able to make a comment about them because they would’ve been already inducted (that’s my case with Coltrane, Davis or Cash, when I was going to vote for them they were inducted yet). So I’m going to define my approach as “false idealistic”, I mean, I’m going to continue voting as previously but having in mind the posterior career of the artist/band and also doing some strategic votes now and then.
So with my false idealism probably my number 1 for 1963 is going to be Roy Orbison, with “In Dreams” fresh and still available in record stores. And maybe some Brazil and some Brill Building too…

Schleuse, about my section on the plaques it’s only a review about the most acclaimed album of the artist inducted according to Acclaimed Music. I’ve (almost) written the one for “Elvis Presley” (1956) and I’ve bought some albums (like “From St. Louis to Liverpool” or “Song for Swinging Lovers”) in order to write the review. I didn’t find in record stores the Armstrong one, “Plays W.C. Handy” (1954), but I’ll get it anyway. And in the case of Hank Williams I’ll wait till 1979 to review the “40 Greatest Hits” compilation. But if someone else wants to make another review of the same album for the plaque it would be great too.

Re: HOA: 1964 discussion thread

1. Bill Monroe - The competition's getting hard for our man soon, and I guess this'll be one of his last chances. Said so last year too, but now I mean it. Hopefully he'll get in.

2. George Jones - I've been listening to him for the last week, and I'll move him up. Wonderful songs.

3. The Beatles - They're quite new to this, but there's no doubt that the songs they've entered into this competition are extraordinary.

4. Patsy Cline - I've been listening to her to, comparing her to George Jones. And she came out losing that battle. However, great songs and a wonderful, heartbroken voice.

5. Roy Orbison - Moving him up as well. Some great new songs now. This'll be his year, with all the love for In Dreams around here.

6. Bob Dylan
7. The Crystals
8. Del Shannon
9. Carter Family
10. Shirelles
