Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

After 40 cuts, we've reached the top ten! There will be two more cuts in which we'll cut two (or more if there is a tie) and then one final cut which will operate the same way but will serve to rank the remaining songs which will be at 5 or less.

Revolver leaves us this week and the only album with more than one song left is Rubber Soul.

Eliminated:

27 Happiness Is A Warm Gun
25 Penny Lane
25 Eleanor Rigby
25 Something

Front runners: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Strawberry Fields Forever, Hey Jude

RULES: Vote for 5 Beatles songs using this format:

5: Song
4: Song
3: Song
2: Song
1: Song

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

Songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

40 or less left: Eliminate 4 rather than 5.
20 or less: Eliminate 3
10 or less: Eliminate 2 for two cuts
Final cut: Eliminate whatever is left (There will be 6 songs or less left) and declare a winner!

The tiebreaker rule will still apply for every round.

2: In My Life
1: Hey Jude

I notice that, of the eight remaining songs, we've got four Lennons (giving him Day in the Life), two Harrisons, and two McCartneys.

What's more, John's songs are all from 65-67, and George and Paul's are from 68-69. That seems exactly right to me--even though my personal top eight would look very different.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

It's interesting that the top ten consists of 3 Lennon songs ("Norwegian Wood," "In My Life," "Strawberry Fields Forever"), 3 McCartney songs ("Eleanor Rigby," "Hey Jude," "Let It Be"), 3 Harrisongs ("Something," "Here Comes the Sun," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), and 1 true Lennon-McCartney collaboration ("A Day in the Life"). I'm glad that it's not lop-sided, and that Harrison's music is remembered.

Here are my votes for this week:
5: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
4: A Day in the Life
3: In My Life
2: Strawberry Fields Forever
1: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

My two favorite Beatles songs destroyed in 1 fell swoop. They did make it to #11 and #10 though.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

I just thought of a way "Survivor" could be played with other artists who have a much more extensive catalog (Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, etc.), but in a way that would probably take much less time than needed, weeding through a bunch of songs only diehard fans know. Here's what I propose:

For the select artist (Bob Dylan will be used as the example in this case), you would use all of their songs included in AM's Top 3000 (31 songs for Dylan), plus all of their bubbling under songs (15 more, bringing the total to 46), then everybody could nominate 5-10 songs that aren't in the Top 3000 or BU. With weighted points, like how we were voting off Beatles songs early on the game (2 songs 5 points, 2 songs 4 points, etc.), the songs with the most points would join the other 46 (who knows how many more you would want to add, but I say the more the merrier...but I would think that 6 points would be a good qualifying number). Then, when you have your final 75-100 or so songs, the voting off begins, following the same format used for Beatles Survivor.

What do you think of this idea?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

Participation in this one was really weak Daniel. I just don't know if it would be worth it to focus on an artist who's catalog isn't as well known and it's definitely not something I'm willing to take on. This one has been fun but I was expecting more people to take part.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: Hey Jude
4: Let It Be
3: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2: In My Life
1: Here Comes the Sun

I was really holding out hope for Happiness is a Warm Gun to make to at least the top 5. Only that one and Norwegian Wood were in my top 20.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5 In My Life
4 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3 Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
2 Here Comes The Sun
1 Hey Jude

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

Can't believe Norwegian Wood is in the top 8!!!

5: A Day in the Life
4: Hey Jude
New votes:
3: In My Life: This had long time ago been in my list, and returns much later than I thought. It's an absolutely perfect song (musically talking, not lyrically), maybe the most cohesive and clean among the remaining ones. The only reason for my vote is that I have no affection for this piece, although I always love it during the auditions.
2: While My Guitar Gently Weeps: This song could be even better if the vocals hadn't been recorded by George. His voice here is too low, and lacks that kind of feeling that elevates much the quality of all the other 7 songs. I think the point is not the way he sings, but the voice timbre itself. All the other elements save it and make it a favorite of mine, though.
1: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown): Maybe a top 20 or 25 for me. It's a really delicious song, but, if compared to the non-voted ones here, it's sound looks more empty. Simplicity is generally a good quality, but maybe not in a candidate for the final round.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: A Day in the Life
4: Strawberry Fields Forever
3: Hey Jude
2: Let It Be
1: Norwegian Wood

I'm a bit surprised we've see "In My Life" go this far. I always had the impression it was the one the critics loved that the forums didn't. So, I was wrong. Good.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

No change this time:

5: Strawberry Fields Forever
4: In My Life
3: Let It Be
2: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
1: Here Comes The Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: Strawberry fields forever
4: Hey Jude
3: Norwegian wood (This bird has flown)
2: Let it be
1: A day in the life

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: Let It Be
4: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3: Hey Jude
2: Norwegian Wood
1: Here Comes the Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: A Day In The Life
4: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
3: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2: Hey Jude
1: Strawberry Fields Forever

This is getting really difficult. I have a clear-cut number one left, but the rest are all about the same. The ones I'm voting for are just the ones I love slightly less.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: Here Comes the Sun
4: Let It Be
3: In My Life
2: While My Guitar Gently Weeps: no negative thoughts anymore, we’re in the Top 10 now. Probably the best Harrison song and probably the best Clapton weeping guitar solo.
1: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown): a smart way of talking (singing) about an extramarital affair being cryptic enough to fool the wife. And the best (first?) use of a sitar in a pop song, one of the most inspired contributions of Harrison. The sarcastic parody that Dylan made about this song (“4th Time Around”) was awesome too.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5:Norweigan Wood(is this some type of joke? - THIS above classics like Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby!)
4:In My Life
3:Let It Be
2:Here Comes The Sun
1:While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

Now only 3 songs in my top 10 are left (wich are also in my top 5).

5: Hey Jude
4: Here Comes the Sun
3: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
2: Let it Be
1: In My Life

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: Here Comes The Sun
4: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
3: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2: Let It Be
1: Hey Jude

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

Daniel, I like your idea. With Dylan you could have two survivors. One with songs until 1976 and one with songs after.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 41- The top 10

5: In My Life
4: Strawberry Fields Forever
3: Norwegian Wood
2: Hey Jude: Four minutes for a playout, no matter how nice it is, gets a bit much. Which is the only bad thing I can say about it.
1: Here Comes The Sun: When they sing, "Sun, sun, sun, here it comes", I momentarily think slightly less of it. Otherwise, perfection never sounded so effortless.

5: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4: Here Comes the Sun
3: Let it Be
2: Strawberry Fields Forever

Nat, you seem to have posted this in the wrong place. This is the previous round's thread.
