Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

And we've reached the top 20! Remember that we eliminate 3 next cut but are still voting for five. It would be good of me to remember that as well!

25 Nowhere Man
20 You Never Give Me Your Money
20 Helter Skelter
16 Revolution
16 And Your Bird Can Sing

Close: Penny Lane, Tomorrow Never Knows

RULES: Vote for 5 Beatles songs using this format:

5: Song
4: Song
3: Song
2: Song

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

Songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

40 or less left: Eliminate 4 rather than 5.
20 or less: Eliminate 3
10 or less: Eliminate 2 for two cuts
Final cut: Eliminate whatever is left (There will be 6 songs or less left) and declare a winner!

The tiebreaker rule will still apply for every round.

Hey Jude

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Finally a song in my list gets eliminated (and another appears in the close ones)! On the other hand, now I've lost my #6 And Your Bird Can Sing and my #13 Revolution. Anyway, it was one of my best surprises until now to see And Your Bird... in the top 20. It has always sounded to me like one of those gems that only I seem to really like. But, as Honorio has said, maybe it's an only AM favorite. What means our taste is better than the critics'!

Later I post my list, have to listen again to Blackbird, Happiness Is a Warm Gun and Help to decide the substitute for You Never Give Your Money...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Something
4: Eleanor Rigby
3: Hey Jude
2: Let It Be
1: The End

A couple new ones this week and I got a new iPod touch and haven't put my Beatles playlist on it yet so I don't have it in front of me. But, I don't think I need the list anymore with only 20 left and I think I remember how I ranked them.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Man, my #1 (You Never Give Me Your Money) is gone.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5 Lucy In The sky
4 A Day In The Life
3 Let It Be
2 We Can Work it Out
1 Something

Sgt Peppers is my least favorite of the great Beatles albums

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

LSD is gone Nicolas. You're gonna have to trip with something else!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Oh, same goes for We Can Work It Out.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5 Blackbird
4 Tomorrow Never Knows
3 In My Life
2 Revolvution
1 The End (been fun for a week, though)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Wow, 3 on my list eliminated.

5: Help
4: Here, There and Everywhere
3: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
2: The End
1: Here Comes The Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5 A Day in the Life
4 Let It Be
3 Something
2 Hey jude
1 While my Guitar

It starts to hurt very much

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Penny Lane
4: Help!
3: Something
2: Eleanor Rigby
1: Here Comes The Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Hey, I'll be going away for a week starting tomorrow. Is there any way I could email my remaining songs in ranked order so that you could include my votes until I get back? If not, that's fine :)

Anyways, here are my votes for this week

5: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
4: Tomorrow Never Knows
3: Yesterday
2: Happiness Is a Warm Gun
1: A Day in the Life

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: The End
4: Here Comes the Sun
3: Help!: Greil Marcus about “Help!” (quote taken from AMG): “The Beatles’ optimism prevailed even when they tried to sound desperate, which sometimes made them sound sappy”. It seems that Lennon once stated that he would have preferred a slow version (me too) but the band chose to speed it up to make it more marketable. Probably this is NOT a previous demo but a solo demo from the middle 70s. Anyway Marcus was WRONG.
2: Let It Be
1: Yesterday
I really can’t think of any negative point about these two McCartney gems. “Let It Be” is an awesome example of white gospel, including a beautiful church organ part by Billy Preston and “Yesterday” is an exquisite ballad with the best use of a string quartet one can think of. These songs are probably here for something that is not Beatles fault, the tremendous overexposure and the million of mushy covers that almost completely ruined them (except maybe the ones from Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles). But the Beatles originals were impeccable.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Strawberry Fields Forever
4: Blackbird
3: In My Life
2: The End
1: Yesterday

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Blackbird
4: Let It Be
3: Yesterday
2: The End
1: Here, There and Everywhere

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
4: A Day In The Life
3: Here, There And Everywhere
2: Something
1: Tomorrow Never Knows

This is actually getting easier for me to vote on songs now. Near the top, there are bigger differences in the quality of the songs.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Honestly, i can't believe that TNK is in the "danger zone" .

5: Yesterday
4: Hey Jude
3: Penny Lane
2: Here, There and Everywhere
1: Here Comes the Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Penny Lane
4: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3: In My Life
2: Happiness Is a Warm Gun
1: Let It Be

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Well, all the 3 star songs are gone for me and now I'm into the 4 star songs so I don't have to feel TOO sad when they go, but after this I hit the 5 stars and that's when it gets rough.

5: Penny Lane
4: Help!
3: A Day in the Life
2: The End
1: Tomorrow Never Knows

"I like black music too"

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Sorry, I want to revise the list because I just listened to The End. That's a 5 Star song, but then again, so is the song replacing it. I guess The End is just more fun.

5: Penny Lane
4: Help!
3: A Day in the Life
2: Tomorrow Never Knows
1: Strawberry Fields Forever

"I like black music too"

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4: Blackbird
3: Here, There and Everywhere
2: The End
1: Norwegian Wood

Slush, “The End” is certainly a fun listen (which is why I haven’t voted for it until now). However, I can’t shake the impression that it’s not…you know, an actual song, instead being the closest the Beatles ever got to a free-form jam—which is something I normally loathe, outside of jazz at least. If you’re the Beatles, you can get away with it, though.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5:The End
3:Norweigan Wood
2:Tomorrow Never Knows

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Yesterday
4: Help!
3: Strawberry fields forever
2: Tomorrow never knows
1: Penny lane

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Tomorrow Never Knows
4: A Day in the Life
3: Eleanor Rigby
2: Yesterday
New Vote:
1: Happiness Is a Warm Gun: The collage structure is very interesting when you are discovering the song, but isn't enough to make it for always a favorite. All the elements here are smartly placed and interpreted, but all the thing doesn't enthusiasm me as much as some years ago, though.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5: Tomorrow Never Knows
4: Something
3: In My Life
2: Strawberry Fields Forever
1: Happiness Is A Warm Gun (NEW): A suite-style song is limited in how good it can be - it's a song with absolutely no weak points to it, but never really delivers a knockout punch (and at this point in the game, that is what's required)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

5. Blackbird
4. Here, There And Everywhere
3. The End
2. Yesterday
1. Hey Jude

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

I'm probably not going to be posting the results until later tonight. I'm in the middle of trying to get iTunes to cooperate with me. I used a program to add lyrics to all my mp3 tags and iTunes didn't like what happened and now won't add about 3000 songs. It seems like it's a header problem but I've used repair tools and they aren't working.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

It's simple. Stop using iTunes.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

Yeah, that would be nice but I have an iPod Touch and you have to use the software. I don't listen to music on my computer anyway I only use ITunes for syncing.

Results coming in a few.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 38

By the way, sorry Daniel for not responding to your post. I'll include whatever stays in. If you happen to be on the net just post them in the next cut and I'll keep track.
