1986 is the year of the first inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Perhaps because they had no recent music to listen to, because I don't think much of most of the music in 1986. One of the weakest years of the decade if you ask me.
Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 31st of August. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.
Please have a look at the 1986 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1986 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.
Other than the top two I think I'd agree with that. But, Queen Is Dead is probably my #3 or so of the decade.
1. Smiths - Queen Is Dead (#12 all time)
2. Paul Simon - Graceland (#63 all time)
3. Steve Earle - Guitar Town
4. Billy Bragg - Talking With The Taxman About Poetry
5. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
6. XTC - Skylarking
7. Run DMC - Raising Hell
8. Peter Gabriel - So
Agreed, those top 2 (although I would rank them the other way around) are head and shoulders above the rest.
1986...next year, 1987, The Pixies started to release albums...

1988 has two of my top ten all time, and maybe up to eight or so I would consider for a top 100. I think it's a really fantastic year. It's almost a shame it only gets the same amount of albums as 1986 gets.

Smiths looks like a lock for #1, but the question is, will it win by the greatest margin out of the entire 1970-2009 period?
Anyone remember from the 90's poll what the current leader for margin of victory is?
I might need someone to explain to me the critical appeal of the Beastie Boys. I find the screechy voices annoying, and the one album of theirs I bought (Ill Communication) has a couple fantastic songs that all had videos on MTV and the rest all filler.
I like almost any songs in Paul's Boutique, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty + most of Licensed to Ill even if it is by far they more repetitive album.
Paul's Boutique is one of the best produced hip-hop album ever, one of the most influential too. Its use of samples has not been improved before, I think, the Avalanches, the rhymes are good, their flow too and it shows the first clues of their great versatility with surprising songs such as Looking down the barrell of a gun. This album (and 3 Feet High and Rising) are to my mind an answer to Public Enemy and NWA, hip-hop can be fun but brilliant, light but clever and aggressive neither lyrically nore musically. Those 2 albums seams to me as the true ancestors of Kanye West, Outkast and all the other hip hop artists which enhances their music more than their lyrics. Honestly I like those band much more, in music I like well, music !
Ill communication is to my mind the proof that it is one of the most versatile band ever.
First the hip-hop songs are just perfect, great flow, original samples (flute loop, alright hear this), more intelligent lyrics than before (of course they have not that accurate view on the society that Public Enemy had, and when they try to be more world conscious they suck, try the lyrics of some songs in The 5 Borroughs). Root Down and Sure Shot, the singles, are brilliant but not much more than Alright Hear This, Flute Loop or Get it Together.
The punk tracks are good without being exceptional, at the opposite of Sabotage. I find amazing that one of the greatest riff of the 90s is made by a hip-hop band.
They also provide great instrumental songs, one or two are fillers I agree but most are brilliant, with a great bass play and piano lines thank to the talent of Money Mark.
However their second greatest achievment behind Paul's Boutique is Hello Nasty, more versatile and more successful in its trys. Being the usual great hip-hop songs (and some of their best : Intergalactic and Super Disco Breaking which provides great electrical samples, very original for the year it came out ; the negociation limerick files, one of my favourite with its somehow dark and sad sample ; remote control and its huge bass line, played as a live band ; body movin' and its witty rhymes; 3 Mc's and one DJ and it demonstration of Mix Master Mike talents...).
The other songs are even more versatile than in Ill Communication. They abandon their punk side and try brilliant songs, my favourite being the moody "I don't know" but Sneakin' out the hospital also has a very special atmosphere of madness and And Me an intimate idea of introspection...
Well, to sum it up I truly love this band, versatile, great production, witty lyrics (not always ok...), great flow...
I find it a little frustrating not being able to really explain in English why I like that band that much (I guess I will find a translator and type in French... nicolas, any availability ? )
Anyway at least you have made your opinion on Ill Communication, not on Licensed to Ill which would give a very biased opinion on the band.
However all their albums are very different (I even don't really like Check your Head while I love all the others) from one another (Hello Nasty and Ill Communication being the only 2 kind of look-alikes) and I think you can be a huge fan of one without loving the others (as for instance you could love Ziggy Stardust and hate Low or love After the Goldrush and not Rust Never Sleeps... well, hope you get my point).
I would understand if Licensed to Ill did not make the cut (even if I would be disappointed)since it is indead some frat music with dumb lyrics but I would not if Paul's Boutique did not (but I'm quite sure it will, it has quite strong defenders on the forum)

Maybe I'll give them another chance with Paul's Boutique.
I did like Sure Shot and Sabotage. And that much later song where spies were killing each other over a recipe for sauce in the video was okay.
The thing that really turns me off to them is annoying stuff like 'Fight For Your Right To Party'. Especially in songs like that one the guy with the whiny voice screeches atonally too much.
Lonesome Panda,
Funny that you mentioned the Beastie Boys, because I've been listening closely to "Licensed to Ill" for a couple of days after reading a great review in AMG and seeing them so high in AM list.
Like Bill Adama, I find the screechy voices annoying, and the music very aggressive, but then after a few listenings I realized it was fun more than aggressivness (like Eminem 10 years after)
I can't say I love it, but I learned to like it.
So when you say it is their most repititive record, I'm released because it is indeed quite repetitive, although there are great songs like Fight For Your Right or She's Crafty.
There is a lot of energy, but their rap is not so round and flexible as black rap
No vote for Stan Ridgway ?
A great album and a great songwriter
anybody knows him ?
I'll vote for Ridway!
Perhaps, like the Stranglers, he's a man that only the French love...
I had never heard of him, but that song does sound very good.
What about that one ?

Eddo: "Camper Van Beethoven - Take the Skinheads Bowling" is a 1985 track.
Anyone remember from the 90's poll what the current leader for margin of victory is?
For albums the current leader for biggest margin is 1997's OK Computer with a gap of 846 points, which seems like its not going to be beaten. The largest songs gap is lower, but also quite substantial: a 313 point lead by Blue Monday in 1983.
Nicolas, I don't want to be a trouble-fête, but Blues de la frontera was released in 1988.
I don't have much time to answer, but I think Honorio told me about Blues de la Frontera being from 86
if it is not, then take it out of my list nad put Alpha Blondy's Jerusalem at # 20
Miguel is right, Nicolas. Maybe my rateyourmusic album list has confused you, but it’s a mistake of that page, not mine. Anyway this is another case of an album with uncertain date of release, worsened by the fact of the chaotic behaviour of Spanish music industry (including record companies and press). Rockdelux (the most reliable source of Spanish press) had repeatedly reported 1988 as date of release, but in my own CD copy of the album the date is 1987. Since the record company (Nuevos Medios) doesn’t have any web-page (!!) I can’t confirm this, but I would consider it a 1988 release.
Anyway many thanks Nicolas for voting for Pata Negra!! It seems that both of us are influencing each other (yes, the Brassens virus had infected me!). Anyway in 1986 Pata Negra released another great album, “Guitarras callejeras”, only voice and Spanish guitars, a much rawer affair than “Blues de la frontera”.
Same about the vote of Fred for Paco de Lucía’s “Entre dos aguas”. Thanks a lot for voting for this (superb) song, but in fact in was first released in 1973 as part of the “Fuente y caudal” album and as a single too. Probably you’ve been confused for this compilation released in 1986. You can change this, Fred, but don’t forget to vote againg for “Entre dos aguas” in 1973!!
ok so Stefan please take pata negra out and add Alpha Blondy as nb 20

2 two things that I consider remarkably interesting, nicolas, my birthday boy (sic!)...
first: you branded the Berlin-era David Bowie albums as cold and alienated, while you share an obvious sympathy for Stan Ridgway, and
second: once you deemed Never Mind The Sex Pistols rough and noisily annoying, and then I spot Reign In Blood in your top ten, even above Astor Piazzola, Fela Kuti, Talk Talk or Steve Earle.
well, honestly spoken, nic, you amaze me... how come??
aah
Tastes and colors (as we say in Franch, les goûts et les couleurs)
I would say :
1) that I'm not an expert of Bowie's berlin era, but that I prefer his beginnings (or even some of his early 80s pop singles)
2) That I love Stan Ridgway because he is the hell of a storyteller and that he owes to johnny Cash as much as to new wave
3) That I (slightly changed my mind about the Sex Pistols. Now I can listen to 6 or 7 tracks without getting annoyed
4) That the Slayer album is a masterpiece. To be honest I have only listened to it a couple of times but it's a great experience. It takes you to another place (hell, surely, if you're a believer), and it is technically amazing. That's why it is above a minor Fela
I don't think it explains much : in fact, I love them because I do
Thanks nj for your interest
ah, ok, that's up brightening. thanks for the answer, nicolas

hi, one question, Snusmumrik, for that you are definitely the Steve Wynn expert in here - is this third Dream Syndicate output (your number 1) even for a not soooo very much afficinado like me worth its money?? because I've thought to purchase it some other time.. (say near future...)
background facts: I submit at least a 4.5 (out of usual 5) commitment to The Days Of Wine And Roses and a 4.0 to The Medicine Show (ha ha, statistics talk may kiss me chuckling buns whenever I write stark and stiff male crap like this... sorry, studs.. I'm right brained)
but.. nooo.., seriously, Snu, what's your tip?
aficionado, thought about purchasing etc... oh dear... sorry... I'm rather blight brained after all

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: SAM COOKE “A Man and His Music”
I wouldn’t make a living as an A&R, that’s for sure. My lack of good nose for success is absolute. When I first heard “Querida Milagros” I though that it was a quite imaginative way of integrating flamenco sounds in a pop context, but in any way I predicted the enormous success in Spain of El Último de la Fila (The Last of the Line). And it still surprises me. You can find in that (disappointing) list, the 200 best sold albums in Spain ever, 4 albums by El Último de la Fila (EUDLF) and 2 more by Manolo García in his solo career.
But my lack of instinct is quite forgivable in this case because the style of the band was quite singular. In fact the main virtue (the main fault some may say) of Manolo García’s career has been the incorruptible fidelity to himself, as front-man of Los Rápidos, Los Burros, EUDLF or as a solo artist. His peculiar flamenco-Arabian vocal inflexions and his idiosyncratic lyrics are his main assets, but we can forget the other member of the duo, Quimi Portet, guitar player and responsible of the fresh combination of Spanish, acoustic and electric guitars. Their second album was their best, “Enemigos de lo ajeno” (“Enemies of the Alien”), showcasing “the singular music and interpretative style of the band: pop-rock rich in nuances, hybrid and opened to all kind of influences, where the poetics of Manolo, some times complex but always dreamy, surreal and beautiful, displayed portraits and ambiances absolutely personal” (Javier de Castro for Efe Eme). Another quote: “In EUDLF there’s a meeting of the southern flamenco courage of García with the rush guitar punch of Portet. Their inclination for surrealistic aesthetics shines (before the annoying overuse of the word), and also their aptitude for passionate and eccentric songs, of lunatic lyrics not always understandable” (Jordi Bianciotto for Rockdelux).
The song selected is “Aviones plateados” (“Silver Planes”), that replaces “Insurrección” (“Insurrection”), my initial choice. Manolo wrote the lyrics in a burst ( “I remember perfectly how I jumped out of bed one night, there was a special chemistry and I wrote it in one go” in his own words) and Quimi provided the music backing combining 80s-style electric guitars and flamenco flavours like hand-claps and Spanish guitars, putting together a song about sick love, about loving obsession, about morbid jealousy.
AVIONES PLATEADOS
Composers: Manolo García / Quimi Portet
Performer: EL ÚLTIMO DE LA FILA
First release: 1986 (“Enemigos de lo ajeno” album)
Length: 3’49”
Veo tu casa desde mi balcón,
chimeneas y tu ropa al sol.
Aviones plateados
rozando los tejados.
Vestido y en la cama
vigilo tu ventana.
Miro libros de pintura que robé.
No tengo hambre, hoy no comeré.
Ropa sucia, cuadros que he “pintao”,
discos viejos, “to” por ahí “tirao”.
Barba de quince días,
no me levantaría.
Y tu carta me confundió,
ahora lo entiendo.
Tu mirada me lo advirtió:
“nunca más vuelvo”.
Ah, ah, aaah, ah-ah-uh-oh, oh-oh-uh-oh,
oh, ay-ay-aaay.
Oh, oh, oooh, oh-oh-uh-oh, oh-oh-uh-oh,
ay, ay-ay-aaay.
Oh, oh, oooh, oh-oh-uh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh,
Ay, ay-ay-aaay
Oh, oh, oooh, oh-oh-uh-oh, oh-oh-uh-oh
Ay, ay-ay-aaay
Oh, oh, oooh, oh-oh-uh-oh…
SILVER PLANES
I see your house from my balcony,
chimneys and your clothes hanging in the sun.
Silver planes
brushing the roofs.
Dressed in bed
I watch your window.
I see stolen painting books.
I’m not hungry, today I won’t eat.
I can’t complain,
I’ve got what I want.
I’m free in front of the mirror,
I don’t go out but I can.
And you always tell me that I am a soul from hell.
I’m afraid you’re right, maybe it’s true.
I always want what I haven’t got.
And since you’re not with me I’m wasting away.
Dirty clothes, paintings that I’ve done,
old records, everything lying around.
Fifteen days’ growth stubble,
I wouldn’t get up.
Campaign in a mess,
now I now she’s cheating me.
Credentials of possession, what a nonsense!
This jealousy has burned me down, I don’t know what I was thinking.
Just when I though
“at last she’s mine”
she was turning around yet.
I should have learned.
And your letter confused me,
now I understand.
Your look warned me:
“I will never come back”.
Ah, ah, aah,…

Netjade,
Out of the Grey is sort of the Dream Syndicate's pop album. If you like the poppier melodic hooks aspect of their work (very much in evidence on Wynn's first solo, Kerosene Man), I'd say you'll like Out of the Grey. It does not have the every long meandering (and absolutely wonderful) songs that you find on Medicine Show, but some very fine songwriting. It's been a while since I've seen Wynn live, but songs off Out of the Grey used to be prominent in his shows.
Oh my. It's the end of the month isn't it.

I'm listening to Life's Rich Pageant for the first time. (Which makes it the 10th REM album in my collection, which probably makes REM 3rd to Dylan and Young in terms of albums owned).
I don't really get it. I'd probably put it as my least favorite REM album other than Accelerate. (I don't have Up, Reveal, Around The Sun, or Monster). It sounds like the same, but lacking punch.
thanks very much for the inside job, Snu. I've listened to a couple of its bits on iTunes Store meanwhile, and although I tend to prefer their meanderingly epic stuff, that album somehow seems to sound like some notional "What-if-the-eponymous-Echo-N-Bunnymen-album-was-eventually-mistreated-and-totally-underrated" rant from a "21 jump streets egual 65 hump suites" Reaganomics janitor and future Ellis psychofairy who got angrily thus sentimentally evocative of the 86/87 era - but this time righteously so. I think I'll go and buy this one. I'm confident it has some nice edges.. in addition thanks. once more..
Actually there are some good songs on "Born Sandy Devotional", guys and girls!
Is there any better New Order song than "Bizarre Love Triangle"? Just discovered it, du to massive appeal...
At the moment,I'd agree it's NO's best song. Pity it came out in the same year as There Is A Light, any other year it would probably be #1 for me...
Netjade, I think that exactly describes it

Gott a say I disagree with those who say 1986 was a mediocre year (or worse) for music. Lots of damn good stuff, in my opinion. To show how deep I think the competition is, The Queen is Dead--the first Smiths album I understand what all the fuss is about (it's a great album and I love it!)--I have at only number 8.
1) The Costello Show - King of America
2) Paul Simon - Graceland

I've spent most of yesterday moving stuff into my new student house so I'm a little late this month. That does mean your list is in time Mitchell.
The results will be up in a couple of hours.
Guess I didn't make that "few hours. Sorry for the delay, I'm gonna collate the last of the lists now and finish this thing. It's been somewhat of a hectic weekend ( monday).

For the complete list, check
Stephan, excellent work as always. A bit disappointed that neither of Elvis Costello's albums managed to make the top ten, but oh well.
A question: "Dear God" by XTC received 39 points on the song poll. However, it's listed as a 1987 song on AM, which I think is accurate - I know it wasn't added to SKYLARKING until after the album's initial release. I'm pretty sure more people would have voted for it were it not for that, but I just wanted to clarify whether it's eligible for the '87 poll.
Agree with you Harold about the disappointing about Costello. I like a lot “King of America”, in fact I wrote a review in this forum about it some years ago.
But I had to disagree about the release date of “Dear God”. I didn’t realize that it was listed in AM as 1987, and you’re right about that the first release of “Skylarking” didn’t include it. The first release of “Dear God” was as the B-side of “Grass” single in August of 1986. But the success of the B-side (especially in USA!) forced the release of “Dear God” as an A-side single and the inclusion in successive releases of the album.
Anyway I’m delighted of having the opportunity to vote again for this song. I was quite disappointed about the lack of votes in 1986 but it’s nice to have a second chance in 1987. For me it’s the best song about atheism ever (and don’t want to offend nobody). Please see the (amazing) video:
I'll second what you said Honorio. "Dear God" was in my top five until I realized it was listed as a 1987 song.
P.S. I know he doesn't mean a big reduction in the price of beer, but that would be a pretty good start.
First, Paul Simon easily takes second place, but "The Indestructible Beat of Soweto" only gets ONE vote! Go to the source, people, Hey Zeus!
Second, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I did notice a couple of mistakes in the albums poll. Nothing major, however. I voted for "King of America," but I didn't give it enough points to move up. And "Master of Puppets" is listed twice, getting 35 points from Eddo under "Masters of Puppets." The additional points would move Metallica past Prince into fifth place.
Hey Stephan, i just noticed that my album vote for Metallica - Master of Puppets was recorded as Masters of Puppets and therefore as a seperate album entry. It still made the top 10 but would have been one place higher on the list.
I like Spirit Of Eden but I'm not too big on Laughing Stock. Should I get Colour Of Spring?
COLOUR OF SPRING is kind of a transitional album between TT's more accessible earlier material and the ambient/experimental direction that came to the fore on SPIRIT. You'd probably like it.
(Speaking as someone who doesn't really listen to any of the three that often...)
BillAdama, I'm with you on "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" and I had "The Colour of Spring" as my #5 of 1986. Get it!
