Man, I keep forgetting to change my name when posting for someone else...
Looks like my #1 is gone in Rain. I really thought it was going to hold on for a couple more cuts but new entries and participants pushed it out. She Said, She Said was another top 10 eliminated.
5: Come Together
4: Something
3: Eleanor Rigby
2: Hey Jude
1: Helter Skelter
5: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
4: We Can Work It Out
3: Nowhere Man
2: Helter Skelter
1: A Day In The Life
Yes, I'm voting for "A Day In The Life". I appreciate the song, but don't really like it; the cacophony of sound that appears twice is too jarring for me. Without that, the song becomes (in my eyes at least), much better.
Also sad to see that "Rain" is gone. Although I don't own the song in any real form (my problem with the Beatles' catalog is that their singles are not really conveniently put together in a album), the song is still amazing.
5: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
4: Penny Lane
3: Help!
2: Nowhere Man
1: A Day in the Life
Oh man, and "Rain" is in my top 10 as well. That really was a rough week.
Penguin, you and I seem to have disparate views except for songs everybody likes that we dislike. I will join you in saying "A Day in the Life" is overrated and those orchestral points are annoying. The Beatles did cacophony much better.
Penguin, you should pick up copies of "Past Masters: Volume One" and "Past Masters: Volume Two"...they include all of the Beatles' non-album songs. Even though it might not be the most satisfying listen--a lot of the rarities that haven't already been included on "Beatles 1" or the Red and Blue albums are more beneficial for completest purposes as opposed to a track you would be tempted to skip over on your iPod. However, if you are an avid Beatles fan like myself, the two discs are essential for your CD collection, being the only places to buy classic songs like "Rain," "This Boy," "She's a Woman," and "I'm Down," among others.
Echoing everybody's words: rough week! I've lost 4 loved songs, being Across the Universe my #11 and Dear Prudence my #4!
Slush, good to see it's your number 2... A guy who likes Blur and Dear Prudence surely has a good taste (even though he doesn't like black music, ).
Same vote as last week:
5: You Never Give Me Your Money
4: Tomorrow Never Knows
3: A Day in the Life: great to see other ones who think it's overrated!
2: Eleanor Rigby
1: Yesterday
John, wouldn't we retire only 4 songs last cut? So, as Rain wasn't tied with She Said She Said and I'm Only Sleeping, it shoudn't have been eliminated, should it?
5: Penny Lane
4: We Can Work It Out
3: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
2: In My Life
1: You Never Give Me Your Money - all the love for "Abbey Road" is the big surprise of this game.
In case "Rain" is still in the game it gets its usual five points from me.
I've recently realised something. I'm not sure but I think 4 songs should have been eliminated this time around instead of 5 . Not that i really care but just checking.
And i feel sad for Dear Prudence too, it's my #7. Now only 8 songs in my top 10 are left.
Actually Slush, we seem to have pretty similar musical tastes in general (I too love Blur). I also love "Dear Prudence" (Top 10 for me). Just forgot to mention it.
5: And Your Bird Can Sing
4: You Never Give Me Your Money: due (obviously) to the influence of Wilson’s “Good Vibrations” both Lennon and McCartney used to write songs as collages from different little pieces of music. Lennon apparently abandoned after “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” but McCartney continued using it profusely even during his solo career (“Band on the Run” could be the best example). The collage in this one is tightly build, with superb second (“That Magic Feeling”) and third parts (“One Sweet Dream”), a quite good first part (the title theme) but a quite silly last part (“One, Two, Three, Four”).
3: Revolution: in this case the vote got nothing to do with the music (I like especially the fuzzy sound of the guitars and the piano at the end), this vote is for the political Lennon. Of course I agree with non-violence (although not applicable to many non-democratic countries), but the naïve, self-centred and simplistic political attitude of Lennon (and Ono) supposed the first example of a millionaire rock star of humble beginnings with a guilty conscience. And many more came after him.
2: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds: a fantastic song (all the remaining songs are fantastic) with a fabulous arrangement during verses and bridges (particularly the keyboard arpeggio, the sitar and the floating bass line). It gets my vote for the simplistic arrangement of the chorus.
1: Rain: I’m sorry but I’ll stick to the list I send to John, but with “Taxman”, “She Said She Said” and especially the dreamy “I’m Only Sleeping” gone we’re running out of the psychedelic gems of the “Revolver” era.
And my #2 is in real danger now. Why are you voting for “Nowhere Man”, for heaven’s sake?
Thanks a lot John for your help during my holidays. And, yes, the reason of going to Rochester next summer is to learn new techniques in Mayo Clinic from Professor Pulido. He has Cuban background and he speaks Spanish quite well (certainly a more than valuable help in my case).
Long time nosee...
And the game gets more and more interesting..
Only masterpieces left..
So hard to chose...
Sorry but I've got so many things to do (and first of all try to find a better job)
anyway:
5. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
4. A Day In The Life (yes I know, it's AM's favorite song but not mine)
3. We Can Work It Out
2. Let It Be
1. Nowhere Man
Have to ask. Someone. SonofsamIam! Are you also a fan of "The End" on "Abbey Road"? Sorry for asking...but how is IT still hanging around??
My only explanation is that not many have heard the damn song, nor remembered it...I didn't...People are even prepared to vote out/off "A Day In The Life" earlier than it.
I know. I'm the loser in the "The End of Abbey Road"-chicken race! :)
Absolutely Nicolas. Anybody can change their vote to put Rain on. That was my fault. We've had ties for the past two cuts so I got used to posting 5 I guess.
I think a lot of the love towards The End comes from its symbolic value for the Beatles as a whole. That's not to say that it doesn't have value as a song, what with the triple guitar and fantastic harmonizing at the end and all. But it's the final song in medley, the final (real) song on the final (recorded) album, and it has such an air of finality to it that it seems almost impossible to associate the song with positive thoughts. But that's just me.
5: Tomorrow Never Knows
4: Something
3: Revolver
2: In My Life (NEW): It's nice enough, but it's hard to take those lyrics seriously when sung by anyone under the age of 25.
1: Strawberry Fields Forever (NEW): A song that gets an A+ for historic value and influence, but merely a B+ for it's actual value as a song. And 41 years later, it sounds a wee bit dated, a product of its times, no?
I always fall asleep when I travel through "Golden Slumbers"...or "You Never Give Me Your Money", if I'm real tired...now I will stay awake a little longer! :)
And my #2 is in real danger now. Why are you voting for “Nowhere Man”, for heaven’s sake?
He's a real nowhere man,
Sitting in his nowhere land.
Sing, oh no, they can't,
This song is just very bland.
Lets bury it deep under the sand,
Cause its not exuberant.
Nor am I very tolerant,
Of the silliness of this chant.
And with that rhyming scant,
I'll end this nowhere rant.
I don’t find the song that bland,
Love the sound of those guitars
And those kids can harmonize
Like nobody.
Understand your point of view,
Hope you understand mine too,
There’s no reason here to rant
At all.
Oh Stephan, please listen,
You don’t know what you’re missing,
Nowhere Man’s a song of perfect pop.
I'm another that's sad to see Rain knocked out. Hey ho.
On with the show - this time my top 3 votes all got taken off, so my 2pt & 1pt votes get bumped up to 5pts and 4pts respectively, with the others being new.
5: Come Together
4: Strawberry Fields Forever
3: Blackbird
2: And Your Bird Can Sing
1: In My Life
But at this stage, of course, all the songs are great.
sonofsamiam, name one song with a better bassline than "Come Together"...
Pusherman (I know my name isn't sonofsamiam, but I just had to post).
Pusherman was a fine reply! Also off the top of my head, "Good Times", Scott Walker's "The Old Man's Back Again", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Silly Love Songs", "Sabotage", "Cavern", "Flash Light" (yes, I know it's a keyboard), "Reach Out I'll Be There", "II B.S.", "So What", "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine)", "Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa", "Starship Trooper".
Regardless, the bass is great on "Come Together" -- McCartney's basslines are pretty much always awesome. Ringo's drumming is actually excellent on this track too. It's Lennon's contributions that piss me off.
Have to ask. Someone. SonofsamIam! Are you also a fan of "The End" on "Abbey Road"? Sorry for asking...but how is IT still hanging around??
I enjoy it as the OTT capper of Abbey Road, though I'm sure I'll be voting for it in the next week or 2. But it's fun -- EVERYONE gets a solo, they get to act rather silly, and then it winds up with that "Love you make, love you take" bit where I'm still uncertain whether they're winding us up or not. Beautiful little bit, nonetheless.
