Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

If you are like me and consider Help! the start of The Beatles middle (AKA best ) years, the early years are down to one album and three songs! I also have to keep mentioning that the album widely considered to be the greatest ever is now down to two songs...

14 She’s Leaving Home
13 I Saw Her Standing There
11 For No One

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song. Please follow this format to make it easy for me to plug into Excel.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

John, the rules still say "Vote for 10 Beatles songs". I think everyone probably knows that we're now only supposed to vote for 5, but you should change it anyway.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

OK thanks. I forgot that I was going to copy and paste the info I gave last week.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Time for me to join in on the fun, at last!

5: Paperback Writer - The crap that dreams are made of.
4: Nowhere Man - Fairly silly and annoying choir-ish crap.
3: Taxman - Boo fuckin' hoo, some part of my enormous income was taxed for 95%. Cry me a river. Crap, next.
2: Helter Skelter: According to my trustable sources Chelsea and Reuben this is proto-metal, so I guess I should blame the Beatles for the crap that is metal? Thanks guys.
1: A Hard Day's Night: I'm not a big fan of anything The Beatles did before Revolver, but I have to admit that this is probably one of the better songs of that period. Obviously still crap though.

Note: The last 3 songs aren't actually that bad, I was just in the mood for using the word crap.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Ok, I don't feel like I should put my personal thoughts in the main post but here's what I wanted to say about Sgt. Peppers: It's not even close to the Beatles best album- definitely not their masterpiece and as much as I still love it, it could be the most overrated album of all-time when you consider how many people rate it #1. Now, I'd still place it in my top 20 but that would be after Revolver, Rubber Soul and Help. Even if we had 200 people voting, I bet we'd still get similar results of all of the songs from Sgt. Peppers disappearing around the 50 mark save for A Day in the Life and Lucy in the Sky. Again, I'm not trashing the album, I like it a lot- top 20 for sure. But, it isn't the Beatles masterpiece.

5: She Loves You
4: Taxman
3: Golden Slumbers
2: Come Together
1: Day Tripper: I'm kind of surprised to see this one still here especially since Drive My Car went a long time ago. I feel the same about I Feel Fine but I think that has a better structure than this one.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: I Am The Walrus
4: Taxman
3: Ticket To Ride
2: Day Tripper
1: I Feel Fine

Have to mourn for "For No One" this week. I simply think that it's one of the greatest pop songs ever created and the French horn part is amazing. That song is my number two. Good thing my number one song is one of the few that (I think) hasn't received a vote yet. So, still a (small) chance for that one to reach number one in this game too.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Looking over the list, I'm still completely shocked that Love Me Do checks in as the second worst Beatles song...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: Taxman
4: Rain
3: She Loves You
2: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
1: Helter Skelter

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

A shame that I actually quite like a few of the songs. "You Won't See Me" might be last minute filler, but I really think it's a good song. "I Saw Her Standing There" was one of the best early singles and "Get Back" is just freakin' fun.

Same list for me (are there any walrus hunters in the house?):

5: I Am the Walrus
4: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
3: I'm Only Sleeping
2: Paperback Writer
1: Penny Lane

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Since I began knowing better The Beatles (around 2 years ago), I stopped thinking Sgt. Pepper's was the best album ever made, and even the best fab's album. That's not only because it's my least favorite from their "great five" albums, but, mainly, because Revolver seems to be much more loved either by critics than by fans. Take this game for example: it's the disc with the highest number of songs in the top 50, and the only ones which get closer are a double album and a 17-track one. The mass media use to spread the idea of Pepper being the all time greatest album, but, as we know, in the eyes of the critics, it's "only" the 5th, and in ours, the 9th. I, personally, think it should be even lower. It's probably in my all time top 60, way behind masterpieces as the White Album (my #1), Magical Mistery Tour, Revolver, Rubber Soul, and even Let It Be and Beatles for Sale.

5: Eleanor Rigby
4: I Feel Fine
3: In My Life
2: Golden Slumbers
1: Yesterday

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

I completely agree, Sgt.Peppers is way overrated. I'd put it behind The White Album, Revolver and Abbey Road.

Anyway, Chevi's list:

5 pts - I will
4 pts - Don't Let Me Down
3 pts - Yesterday
2 pts - Ticket to Ride
1 pt - She Loves You : I'll just say that most of these early songs are annoying compared with the others.

And those votes for Walrus hurts a lot .

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
4: I Feel Fine
3: Across the Universe
2: Blackbird
1: Golden Slumbers

I know "Blackbird" is the official classic McCartney ballad from the White Album, but I've always preferred "I Will" - and, again, I'm delighted that that miniature masterpiece is still alive this far in. (Although I would gladly have swapped it out for "For No One", which may be Paul's best song and one of the most perfect pop jewels ever composed by anyone.)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Voting for just 5 is rough at this point -- it seems all a song needs is for 2 people to dislike it and it's gone. (Just look at what happened to my beloved "For No One"!)

I'd also be interested to compare this final list to a list where people just vote for their favorites -- might be an interesting compare/contrast, though I'm sure many here are Beatles-ed out.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: Come Together - How is this lame Chuck Berry rip living on so long, especially in the wake of so many other jewels? I just listen to Ringo on this one.
4: Don't Let Me Down - Boring
3: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - Not nearly as good a slice of psychedelia as "Walrus", which seems far less safe.
2: Day Tripper - Never done that much for me. If you want hear a great version, though, check out Hendrix's Radio One take.
1: Revolution - Comes off as sorta trite these days, and it really doesn't rock like it should. The scream in the opening sorta redeems it I guess.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: Don’t Let Me Down
4: I Will [decided to bump this up a couple of places]
3: Across the Universe
2: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
1: Dear Prudence

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: Taxman
4: Yesterday
3: She said she said
2: Revolution
1: I feel finr

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: Ticket to Ride
4: A Hard Day's Night
3: And Your Bird Can Sing
2: Paperback Writer
1: I Will

Sad to see part “I Want You” (simple but vibrant), “She’s Leaving Home” (see last week comments), “For No One” (one of the many Macca peaks, with that wonderful horn solo inspired in classical music but now part of this wide “Beatles” style) and especially “I Saw Her Standing There” (when you hear “Live At the Star Club” one can perfectly notice that, even it shares the feeling with all the rock ‘n’ roll covers, this early song got something else, something special that the R&R classics didn’t have). And I can see some walrus in danger of extinction…

John, tomorrow I’m going to Croatia for my holidays and I won’t be able to vote for more than a week. Won’t you do with me the same as you are doing with Henrik?. Please add to the bottom of my list these songs in the following order when the previous got eliminated (if you don’t mind):
- I Feel Fine
- You Never Give Me Your Money
- Don't Let Me Down
- Revolution
- Taxman
- You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
- Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
- Rain
- We Can Work It Out
- She Loves You
I’ll add my comments a posteriori…

By the way, John, instead of Croatia I planned initially to spend the whole month of July in your country, in Rochester, Minnesota, as part of the formation for my work. Sadly I couldn’t go for logistical problems but I hope I could go next summer…

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

John posting for Henrik

5: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
4: Rain
3: Golden Slumbers
2: We Can Work It Out
1: I Will

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Sure Honorio.

Rochester eh? My cousin lives there and a bunch of my family lives in Austin. It's about a 2 hour drive from where I live. Were you going to be at the Mayo or something? I can't think of another reason to fly from Spain to Rochester!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

5: She Said She Said
4: Don't Let Me Down
3: I'm Only Sleeping
2: I Will
1: Taxman

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Sad to see more of my favourite songs going out, but now we're this far into the game I suppose most of us will be seeing faves go out each time.

5: Dear Prudence
4: Day Tripper
3: She Loves You
2: I'm Only Sleeping
1: She Said She Said

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Sorry Harpo, you were a little too late. You would have pushed She Loves You off too and saved a lot of songs!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 33

Oops that was me forgot to reset the name.
