Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

I need time to regroup after that onslaught. I'm shell shocked.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Mostly to be expected I guess - wouldn't call any of them great songs...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

I would! Two of Us, Being for..., I'm Looking Through You, Think For Yourself and I'm So Tired were all in my top 40. I'm Looking Through You was #9.

Same as last week I guess.

New votes:
3: She Came in Through the Bathroom Window: it’s the first time that I change one of my previous votes, but thinking again this song maybe deserves a lower position than “Carry That Weight” (and I love both!).
2: Fixing a Hole: although it paints a vivid scene of the then current times (“I’m painting my room in a colourful way / and when my mind is wandering / there I will go”) and the arrangements are great (particularly the harpsichord and the Harrison guitar work) the references to drug seems to me a little forced.
2: If I Needed Someone: nice Harrison tune with superb jangle guitars and three-part harmonies. It gets the vote here for being too imitative of the trademark McGuinn style. Although with legions of bands imitating the Beatles at the time (The Byrds for instance), there was no reason at all to being ashamed for copying someone now and then.
1: Back in the U.S.S.R.: this was not imitative, this was a “tribute” to Beach Boys with ironic wordplay about the iron curtain. Surely nice and refreshing, but maybe not “important”.
1: A Hard Day's Night: yes, I know, one of the classic singles of the band, with innovations as the initial chord and an irresistible beat driven by the cowbell. Maybe it gets my vote because of the delivering under the schedule pressure (in fact it was composed, rehearsed, arranged, recorded and mixed the same day in order to get into the soundtrack) that makes it (just a little) inconsistent.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Henrik, did you ever explain why you don't like You've Got To Hide Your Love or at least why you're voting for it now?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

You're right John, I never gave any comments to my initial vote. The reason is that I don't like Lennon's vocal on this song. In particular, that "hey" followed by the raspy "you've got to..." annoys me a lot.

Sorry John, I know you're a big fan of Help! and I haven't been kind to some of the songs.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

No problem, I just was wondering. I think that's one Beatles song almost everyone can agree on even if it's not that acclaimed. So, I was just kind of surprised.

Pretty much everything left is good. I don't enjoy "I Am the Walrus"; I don't understand the love for that song other than the fact that it's experimental. Not my thing.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Penguin, thanks for joining the Walrus Hunter's club. We will be embarking on a journey to the frozen north to kill many walrai in late August, specifically the elusive Lennon Walrus (even though I've heard a legendary hunter by the name of Mark David Chapman may have bagged this one already)

5: I Am the Walrus
5: Twist and Shout
4: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
4: Sexy Sadie
3: Oh! Darling
3: Savoy Truffle
2: She Came in Through the Bathroom Window (didn't Joe Cocker cover this as well?)
2: The Fool on the Hill
1: All My Loving

She Came in Through the Bathroom Window marks about the point when I start liking the songs, but I fail to find them immensely memorable.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

I feel pretty terrible now for laughing at that Lennon joke. Oh well, let's just slay the walrus!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Yeah, Joe Cocker covered that one as well but he did a much better job. Joe Cocker is a mystery to me. He has two of my least favorite songs ever into this world in You Are So Beautiful and With a Little Help From My Friends, but most of the time I don't mind him. I think I don't mind him as long as he's not trying to croon.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Joe Cocker's version of With A Little Help From My Friends is one of the greatest covers ever - I want it played at my funeral.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

5: She's Leaving Home
5: She Said She Said
4: Cry Baby Cry
4: Don't Let Me Down
3: Martha My Dear
3: Savoy Truffle
2: Fixing A Hole: Sounds too forced, too dated.
2: I'm Only Sleeping: Innovative at the time, but it jaunts along without getting out of second gear.
1: I Want You (She's So Heavy): I love the sound of it, but really, it goes on for far too long.
1: Lovely Rita: That introduction is absolutely lovely...but then it devolves into standard Paul shlock

From today on, all of the new songs in my list are among the ones I really like.
Get Back falls temporarily off my list after a listening to it's Past Masters version. So I have two new songs here today.

4: With a Little Help from My Friends

3: Come Together

New entries:
1: In My Life: I feel a bit bad for voting in this kind of absolute classics, but we've achieved a level in which it's almost unavoidable to vote sometimes in songs from this group. This is the only remaining Rubber Soul track that I like a little less and am not used to listen to so frequently. I assume what is the probable reason: don't know why, but I'm not such a fan of slow songs. Yes, there are many of them that I love (and some of these are in this game's top 70 group), but when I have to choose between two songs that I personally like the same way, I will always prefer the more upbeat one. Of course it's not an absolute rule that I always follow; music is an all subjective thing, but I've concluded that this is the only reason for me to vote in this song, even though I always consider it one of the Fab's most perfect pieces when I listen to it. This fact will also explain some of my votes in the next rounds...
1: I Will: Nice melody and refined vocals, but not so strong as the other remaining tracks.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

God, what have I done above?
I've accidentally copied part of my text and repeated it, turning it all confusing even to me!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Continuing the Joe Cocker discussion from above - didn't his version of "...Bathroom Window" actually come out (on his self-titled second album) -before- ABBEY ROAD? It's a great cover, managing to take a brief song that's part of a medley and prove that it can stand alone (don't know if you could do that with "Mean Mr. Mustard" or "Polythene Pam", though).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

I never knew that it came out before Abbey Road!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 28

Well, now that I've looked it up - which I probably should have done first - I think that JOE COCKER! actually came out after ABBEY ROAD after all. Incidentally, the album contains a cover of "Something", as well.
