Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: Oh! Darling
5: I've Just Seen a Face
4: Baby You're a Rich Man
4: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
3: Mother Nature's Son
3: For No One
2: From Me to You
2: Getting Better
1: Hey Bulldog
1: Hello Goodbye

Wow, that's a lot of McCartney songs! Also, bubbling under: "The Long and Winding Road" - sorry Anthony, but I find it boring. However, none of the songs left, not even the ones on my list, are bad.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: LADY MADONNA
5: ROCKY RACCOON
4: THINGS WE SAID TODAY
4: ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
3: BECAUSE
3: DON'T LET ME DOWN
2: IN MY LIFE
2: EVERYBODY'S GOT SOMETHING TO HIDE EXCEPT ME AND MY MONKEY

I'm dropping "I've Just Seen a Face" (for now), and with the departure of "Good Morning" I'm left with two open slots...

1: GIRL: How ever many notches "Nowhere Man" brings up Rubber Soul, "Girl" brings it down that many.

1: THINK FOR YOURSELF: The verses feature an oddly dissonant chord structure and the lyrics are top-shelf (for Rubber Soul-era at least) -- both good things. But I'm adding this one to my ballot because of the chorus, which falls a bit flat by not taking advantage with a melodic punch in the face -- something John or Paul could've written in their sleep (had either of them actually been willing to help George).

As for "Winding Road", the sentiment is understandable Henrik -- it's not the most exciting song (sluggish tempo, nostalgic lyrics, innocuous instrumentation), but it's still powerful as hell, given the context. Naturally, I'm hoping that it won't get voted out any time soon, and to that end I'm desperately trying to make a case for it, but I'm beginning to see that it's a task as impossible as convincing those who labelled No Country For Old Men "a boring movie" that it wasn't.

And as for the McCartney comment, I got curious and performed a quick breakdown of my personal top 10 Beatles tunes (by writer). Looks like this:

McCartney: 4
Lennon: 4
McCartney (with Lennon): 1
Lennon (with McCartney): 1

What does everyone else's look like?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

McCartney: 8
McCartney & Lennon: 1
Lennon: 1

The top 6 consists entirely of songs by McCartney. Interesting exercise; I've always liked Paul much more but I didn't expect it to be such a landslide.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

McCartney 3
Lennon 5
Both 2

Interesting because I'm more of a fan of McCartney post Beatles than Lennon. But, I suppose it isn't a blowout.

5: All You Need is Love
5: She Loves You
4: Long and Winding Road
4: Eight Days A Week
3: Savoy Truffle
3: Got To Get You Into My Life
2: Twist and Shout
2: From Me To You
1: Back in the USSR
1: I Want To Hold Your Hand

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: I'm A Loser
5: I'll Follow The Sun
4: Eight Days A Week
4: Hard Day's Night, A
3: If I Fell
3: Can't Buy Me Love
2: Things We Said Today
2: Please Please Me
1: Rocky Racoon
1: Hey Jude

For me, 1964 is the low point of their output. "Please Please Me" is such a naughty song masquerading as innocent pop. And "Rocky Racoon" and "Hey Jude" are cute, but too silly.

Lennon: 4
McCartney: 3
Harrison: 2
Starr: 1

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: I Should Have Known Better
5: All My Loving
4: Things We Said Today
4: You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
3: I Want You (She's So Heavy)
3: If I Needed Someone
2: I Want To Tell You
2: Savoy Truffle
1: Drive My Car
1: I Feel Fine

Some of these really feel kind of arbitrary. It's still pretty difficult for me to vote.

As for top 10 Beatles songs:

Lennon: 3
McCartney: 5
Harrison: 2

Pretty similar to what I thought, actually.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

You really think that Please, Please Me is about sex? I don't think so. One guy writing it in a book doesn't make it true, and I'm sure it's one of those "song meanings" that Paul laughed about when he read it.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Songs like 'Please Please Me' aren't supposed to be analyzed - none of their early songs, actually most of their songs - they're not known for their deep lyrics or anything - pretty emotionless

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: The Fool on the Hill
5: From Me to You
4: I've Just Seen a Face
4: You're Going to Lose That Girl
3: The Long and Winding Road
3: It's All Too Much
2: I Want to Tell You
2: Magical Mystery Tour
1: I'll Follow the Sun
1: Piggies

Very sorry to see "No Reply" miss the top 100 - to my mind, it's a perfectly constructed song, a daringly low-key album opener, and a personal favorite.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Without giving away too much...

1. McCartney (1970)
2. Lennon (1967)
3. Lennon with McCartney (1967)
4. Lennon (1967)
5. Lennon (1966)
6. McCartney (1966)
7. Lennon (1966)
8. McCartney, with Lennon (1965)
9. McCartney (1967)
10. McCartney (1968)

Lately I've been trying to figure out whose songbook I'd pick - John's or Paul's, if it came down to that. Such a tough choice, since they both wrote their share of doozies -- rockers and ballads (and the pigeon-holing that they've both been victims of is quite ridiculous).

If I do a top 20, it's 12-8 for John.

Top 50... (and I'm counting middle-eight contributions (ie. "with") in favor of the originator):

John: 25
Paul: 19
George: 3
John/Paul: 3

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

John 7
John & Paul 1
Paul 1
George 1

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: Please Please Me
5: If I Fell
4: I'll Follow The Sun
4: Lady Madonna
3: Dear Prudence
3: Things We Said Today
2: You're Going To Lose That Girl
2: Girl
1: Drive My Car
1: Getting Better

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

I was wondering when someone was going to put George on their list. I figured there would be more big fans of Something or While My Guitar Gently Weeps especially after all the love for Long and Winding Road.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

1. Piggies
2. Savoy Truffle
3. Blue Jay Way
4. Taxman
5. I Need You
6. Within You Without You
7. Here Comes the Sun
8. Love You To
9. Long, Long, Long
10. Something

I Me Mine
Only a Northern Song
If I Needed Someone
Old Brown Shoe
The Inner Light
Think for Yourself
You Like Me Too Much
Flying*
I Want to Tell You
Don't Bother Me
It's All Too Much
For You Blue
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Not a lot of love for "Blue Jay Way" around these parts, but it's one of my faves.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: Julia
5: For No One
4: Got to Get You Into My Life
4: I Should Have Known Better
3: Rocky Raccoon
3: With a Little Help from My Friends
2: I'll Follow the Sun
2: Because
1: Come Together
1: If I Fell

New entries:

- Rocky Raccoon: My #28 best White Album track. When I listen to it in the disc, it sounds quite good, or at least doesn't bother me, but, when heard as an independent song, it's always annoying. It's a poor song, that only has the function of turning vaster and longer the album's folky/country part.

- I'll Follow the Sun: I should be voting for this one since a long time, but, due to my affection for Beatles for Sale, somehow I forgot it. It surely is not a bad song, but there's also nothing special about it, contrarily to much of the other tracks of the amazing album's first-8-songs-sequence.

I had already looked at the distribution of my top 10 songs per composer some time ago, what had make me realize I like John and George much more than Paul.

John: 5
George: 4
Paul: 1

Hey, Anthony, your 2 favorites from George are also my 2 favorites of him and my #7 and #1 Beatles tracks, respectively! On the other hand, I was so pleasantly surprised that my #8 Think for Yourself hadn't already received any vote, and it has gained its first little point! I think I'll start to think of voting on Long and Winding Road after that! , just kidding...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Just coming from a trip to Belgium (I recommend to all of you to go and see the wonderful Brugge) just in time to see Spain winning Sweden in Euro UEFA Cup 2008 (so sorry, Henrik, but the Spanish team deserved it more) and The Beatles inventing all kinds of music five minutes before than anyone (is there a word in English to express extremely boring?).

My list:
5: I Want to Tell You
5: Hello Goodbye
4: I Want To Hold Your Hand
4: If I Fell
3: Getting Better
3: I Should Have Know Better
2: Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
New votes:
2. Magical Mystery Tour: bright attempt to make music for commercial advertising and a good sample of Macca craft for song-writing. But maybe this time more craft than inspiration.
1. Ticket to Ride: I know, it’s one of the classic singles, but it’s not one of my favourites (except that great McCartney guitar solo at the end). But, wait a minute, The Beatles invented something with this one?
1. Rocky Racoon: we’ve talked too much about this one, didn’t we?

And in my Top 10:
Lennon 5
McCartney 5
(damn, I should have put some Harrison one, but I was trying to be democratic, just putting my favourite ones)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Just before I jump into my vote for this week, I'd like to express my confusion regarding the elimination of "And I Love Her"...really?! Even though "Good Morning Good Morning" is one of my fave Beatles songs, I can see why people wouldn't like it, and I'm not surprised it got the boot. But why "And I Love Her"? Unbiased, I think it is easily one of their best songs from their early career (which most of this forum would agree isn't as good as their later work). Oh well. At least it made it pretty far for a song from A Hard Day's Night. I just think it's a pity it couldn't make it to the Top 100. Anyways...

I have made an iTunes playlist now that we are getting close to the Top 100 (on that note, is it possible that there has been a miscount, and there are actually 101 songs left, not 102?)

Anyways, here is my updated list:

5: Drive My Car
5: Rocky Raccoon
4: Back in the USSR
4: I Want You (She's So Heavy)
3: I Saw Her Standing There
3: I'm A Loser
2: I'm So Tired
2: I Want To Hold Your Hand
1: Can't Buy Me Love
1: Please Please Me

As promised, I am voting for "Drive My Car" after a week of grace, as well as another wild card that I have never voted for in the past: "Rocky Raccoon." What really kills the song is the first verse when Paul tries to jam 3 songs worth of syllables into 4 lines of hick yammer. The fact that every character in this song has just enough aliases to keep the tune rhyming with itself is a bit embarrassing, and the third strike goes to the fact that "Rocky Raccoon" is one of the most well-known songs from the White Album. According to Mediabase, it has been played on the radio more than "Dear Prudence," "Blackbird," "Helter Skelter," and "Happiness Is a Warm Gun," just to name a few.

After listening to the remaining songs, I realized that "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" isn't as powerful as I had remembered (perhaps it was the use of its song during the scene with John Lennon's death in the TV special of "The Beatles Revolution" that had caused me to think it was).

"I'm A Loser" also gets some new votes from me, and perhaps I had overlooked it because it is one of my favourites from Beatles for Sale. I think "No Reply" is better, but I'm glad that my top two favourites from that album are still intact.

"I'm So Tired," which I have been close to voting for in the past, finally makes my top (or, bottom) 10.

"Please Please Me" also gets a point, one of the handful of songs from the "1962-1966" compilation that I got sick of after many listens.

Also, for my Top 10:

1. Paul McCartney ('69)
2. Paul McCartney ('70)
3. Paul McCartney ('68)
4. George Harrison ('69)
5. George Harrison ('68)
6. George Harrison ('69)
7. Paul McCartney ('67)
8. John Lennon ('67)
9. John Lennon ('68)
10. John Lennon ('70)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

I realized why I thought there was a miscount. "Because" is no longer listed under Abbey Road, even though I think it is still in the game. Is it?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Yeah it's still in - it was on the 'close call' list.
Speaking of which:

5: Rocky Raccoon
5: Piggies
4: Because
4: From Me To You
3: She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
3: Hey Bulldog
2: Mother Nature's Son
2: Martha My Dear
1: Magical Mystery Tour
1: Drive My Car

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5: You're Going to Lose that Girl
5: Everybody's Got Something to Hide...
4: Because
4: Good Day Sunshine
3: Hey Bulldog
3: It's All Too Much
2: Julia
2: Girl
1: From Me To You
1: She's Leaving Home - One of the reasons Pepper doesn't hold up as well as Revolver is because the latter doesn't have middling album cuts like this in the middle of it.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Close: For No One, I've Just Seen a Face, Things We Said Today

I find this absolutely SHOCKING. Those 3 are in my all-time Beatles Top 10. McCartney prejudice maybe?

Anyway, I suppose this means I better start voting again.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

5. You're Going To Lose That Girl
5. I'll Follow The Sun
4. Things We Said Today
4. Cry Baby Cry
3. Fixing A Hole
3. Come Together
2. Baby You're A Rich Man
2. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
1. Two Of Us
1. From Me To You

I think I did that right. :S The ones below 'discography' are the ones we're voting off, yes?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

"For No One" is also in my top 10 as well.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

sonofsamiam, I agree and forgot to make a note of that in my post. One of those is in my top 5 and I think all of them are in my top 25.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

"For no one" is imo one of Paul's very best

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Here I go defending Paul, and then try to vote off some of his songs. Guess I much prefer reserved/ballady Paul (and even whimsical/silly Paul) to fakey/rocky Paul.

5: Piggies
5: Drive My Car
4: All You Need Is Love
4: Come Together
3: Back In The U.S.S.R.
3: Good Day Sunshine
2: I Want To Tell You
2: Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!
1: Fool On The Hill, The
1: Think For Yourself

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Anybody who still wants to vote has a little time while I finish watching this amazing US Open!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

Shit! What a tournament! (I just ducked out of the office to catch the final few holes).

Amazing.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

The internet feed crapped out on the sudden death hole. I watched the whole thing and didn't get to see the final few shots. I'm just a little angry.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

I'm voting after the soccer match
In Europe it's the Euro (european nations' Cup)
Tomorrow france is playing against italy to stay in the tournament(France sucks this year like every other championship)

I Will 5
I Should Have Known Better 5
Baby You’re A Rich Man 4
Day Tripper 4
Getting Better 3
Everybody’s Got Sthg To Hide... 3
Rain 2
Lovely Rita 2
Please Please Me 1
If I Fell 1

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 22

I'm thinking France has a good chance. They were very unlucky against us (and we were equally lucky), while Italy was just plain bad.
