The legendary (now online-only) Ohio modern-rock radio station WOXY (formerly 97X) recently had their annual Memorial Day top 500 countdown. Thanks, man!
That's a spectacular list, and it made me do two things. First, I had to put on Ride's Vapour Trail. It's a magnificent song.
Then I had to discover that radio channel, and now I'm listening to it. It looks great, although this LCD Soundsystem song right now isn't my fav.
Terrific list. Harold, do you happen to know if this is based on listener request? Or is it the station's picks? It'd be great if Henrik could incorporate this one.
Minor cavil: I'm slightly surprised there's only one X song, and I'm VERY surprised that it's "Fourth of July." It's a good song, but to have X only represented by the Dave Alvin period is bizarre--something from when they still had Billy Zoom, like "We're Desperate" or "Los Angeles" or "Hungry Wolf" would be a better pick...as well as a better song. (Come to think of it, I wonder if this one is meant to represent both X and the Blasters.)
But that's just one slightly obscure song--I could probably write 499 paragraphs like that one about this list, had I world enough and time.
All very pale. Where are the black musicians? Ah yes! Bob Marley at number 109
That's so funny that Joey and Luka were back to back. It almost sounds like Joey was the one abusing Luka.
It's a modern rock list otisredding. What do you expect?
didn't he tell?
Why is it Beastie Boys and Public Enemy are not, for example?
PJ Harvey and White Stripes do black music, but are white
Sorry, Public Enemy are in 224 and 279
Schleuse, I'm not sure whether the WOXY 500 is staff- or listener-derived; as I said in my initial post, Henrik chose to incorporate the 2006 edition in the database (it's listed under "97X (USA) - The 500 Best Modern Rock Songs of All Time"), so my thinking is that it's likely a staff list.
Yes, I think it's a staff list. They must have had some information that made me quite convinced, other wise I would not have included it. I can't say I'm 100% sure though.
Btw, many thanks Harold for the list!
How come every time somebody makes a list that doesn't have much music by black performers on it somebody accuses it of racial bias?
A majority of great black music in the last couple decades is either hip-hop, R&B, or soul. If you don't like hip hop but require your music to be tough and cool, your list isn't going to have much black representation, and the only bias you can fairly be accused of is genre bias.
Ironically, the first (and only) post I made in this forum is this one:
http://pub37.bravenet.com/forum/3172289350/show/575722
As you can see, it also caused a racial stir. I still can't understand the correlation between a modern rock list and any discussions along racial lines.
Yeah. A majority of great jazz performers are black and a majority of great classical composers are white. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the culture of the music.
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science on there
No Close but no Cigar? It must have been close but no cigar
Hi, I'm the one that originally sumbitted that old WOXY list. It is compiled by staff without reader input, or at least was prior to the station's buyout a few years back. They do have an annual ranking that takes listener input into account. Or did, I guess. Times do change.
Anyway, I hope that helps a little.
