Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Welcome to those who voted for the first time last week! I know there was some talk about Birthday being voted off...it's safe for a few more days at least. It returns to the close list after having a break last week. Finally, there's only one more song left for With The Beatles. If it gets voted off it would be the first complete album to be eliminated.

Eliminated:

19 points: She's a Woman
19 points: You Can't Do That
17 points: Doctor Robert
15 points: Yer Blues
14 points: It Won't Be Long

Close: Birthday, Glass Onion, Dig a Pony, Good Morning Good Morning

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song. Please follow this format to make it easy for me to plug into Excel.

5: Song
5: Song
4: Song
4: Song etc...

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

You guys sure don't like Paul as a rocker. She's a Woman is the latest casualty.

Hey Honorio -- I think I just found the answer to that eternal "name your dream job" question... turns out, Lewisohn had it. What a gig, hey? (thanks for the Dowling suggestion, btw).

Monday arrives and my Rubber Soul smear campaign screeches to a halt (I'm joking of course -- I have other casualties in line). Sorry to see "Yer Blues" get the axe; it's better than about a quarter of the remaining songs from W.A. And over the weekend I finished watching the Anthology, and if I didn't before, now I REALLY have to get my hands on a copy of the MMT film, if only for that mindblowing performance video of "Walrus". eBay, here I come...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Have you ever seen it before? It's keeps getting more and more strange as the movie goes along. It's really weird and not really in a good way.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

No, I haven't John, but I really want to. You know, I love that entire period, when they'd make weird videos like that and make people wear silly noses and tie balloons to their instruments. '67 Beatles rule (actually, include Nov. and Dec. '66 in there too).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Oh, it's a lot weirder than balloons and noses. The movie ends at a burlesque with a guy singing a song called Death Cab For Cutie (Where the band got it's name from). This might not be safe for work although it is censored. The music videos are fine although Blue Jay Way is a little strange. But, it's what goes on between the music that's odd and not in a good way.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Thanks for posting that, J. As bizarre as it is, I still have to get my hands on the film.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Geez - if people think 'Yer Blues' is crap, what does that make some of the other songs on the White Album?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

What's so great about Yer Blues? Dylan had already beat that horse into the ground and he did it a thousand times better and in his own way. Yer Blues might as well be a cover and I thought we already got rid of those.

"I Want to Tell You" has a flagrantly dissonant piano chording a full year before John Cale did the same thing on "I'm Waiting for the Man". Not sure it's intentional in George's case, though. It just sounds off.

1: If I Fell: maybe too sentimental
1: Dig a Pony: maybe too self-indulgent

Anthony, I knew that you liked that “dream job” too.
You’ll like MMT video too, it’s completely odd but the clips are really good, especially “Walrus”. I remember in 1990 seeing it in a bus going to Barcelona to see The Stones.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

I like "Yer Blues" for its dirty groove -- not saying it's the best thing on WA, but it's certainly better than "Onion", and "Everybody's Got...", and probably "Prudence" too. Maybe throw "Martha" in there as well.

Back to MMT... I like the "Your Mother Should Know" sequence (the synchronized staircase dance). And "Walrus" of course is amazing. Get a load of Mac's cool Rickenbacker bass! It's just too bad Lennon had to go and get rid of his ridiculously awesome handlebar 'stache.

2: I Want to Hold Your Hand
2: Glass Onion
1: Savoy Truffle
1: Baby's in Black

New for me this week are: "Glass Onion" (which I see as more cheap songwriting as opposed to "clever" songwriting), however, you cannot deny that it does have a nice rocking beat; "Savoy Truffle" which I love the instrumentation for, however, I feel the melody and lyrics aren't very strong; "Baby's in Black" is one of my favourite songs from Beatles for Sale, and I'm glad to see that it has lasted this long, but I gave it another listen, and I feel that the song could be improved upon.

We are also at the point in the game where we are getting close to the Top 100. My new votes go to songs that I would not miss if left off of the Top 100.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Hey John,

I have a suggestion.

What would "Survivor" be without its twists?

What do you think of the idea of possibly having a "Wild Card" vote one week, where instead of voting out our least favourite songs, we vote for eliminated songs that we want back in the game? Perhaps 5 or 1 songs could be voted back that may be very well-liked by many fans, yet were hated by just enough people at the time to get it voted out. If this were done, I think it would make the most sense to do this later on in the game (top 10 or top 20-ish...or hold a vote once the top 20 has been decided, which would extend to a "top 25").

Just throwing that out there. Let me know if you like this idea. By the way, I think you're doing an awesome job at hosting this Survivor, and I'm having a lot of fun!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

Personally,I think 'The Long And Winding Road' and 'All You Need Is Love' are the only ones good enough to come back...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

I think that it's not such a bad idea considering we are getting more participants. But, it does take away from everyone who voted from the beginning.

It's up to you guys. I'd probably make it around Cut 25 rather at the end since I don't think any of the songs voted off deserve to be in consideration for the top 20. Not because I don't like them, but they shouldn't get a free pass. Anyway, I'm on the edge on this one and would like some feedback.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

I like the idea.

As someone who's been voting from the beginning, I find that the game has sort of been cheapened by the one-off ballots that come in from time to time. Case in point -- a few weeks ago there was this surge of voters, and now it's dropped off again. Now, I can't remember if any of those votes had an effect on my favorite songs (I'm thinking specifically about "Long and Winding Road" here, and it's nice to see Midaso on the same page as me; it's my favorite Beatles song), and yes, it seems a bit juvenile to disallow contributions, but I still think a game like this could've benefited from establishing a "voters allowed" list at the beginning, and seeing it through until the end.

So yes, I think we should introduce a wildcard component at some point, if only to aid in reversing the influential and unfortunate "one-offing" that has occurred at points during this game.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

I'd be for it a wildcard as well. As for at what number, I'd prefer to let it happen earlier (say at the 40 or 50 mark), because once you get down to the final 20 or so, I can't imagine any of the songs brought back sticking around for more than one turn - and part of the fun of this would be to see if say a "Long and Winding Road" could survive for a couple of weeks after being brought back.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

A wild card round seems like a good idea, for reasons already mentioned. But I think we should do it now when we're halfway down the list, and to get a "complete top 100". Perhaps there could also be another wild card round before we get to the top 50, but I'm not sure this game would benefit from wild cards later in the game.

Anyway, John, I'm happy with whatever you decide.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

If we do it at the halfway point that means it's happening next cut. I don't think we have all of the participants yet although it might be a good way to bring some people in.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

This week I'll put some A Hard Day's Night songs I should have been voting for much time ago but didn't have courage (mainly for not being familiar enough with them, and, so, seeing that later I could repent for that vote). Also, a new listening to Good Morning Good Morning changed my vision about the song. There's a great instrumentation, nice rhythm variation during the song time and also amazing exquisite sounds, being all this aspects very appropriate for creating that Peppery climate to the song. Finally I understood why it hasn't been voted off yet. So, it subtly got out of my list after having been receiving 4 pts for some weeks.

5: Julia
5: For No One
4: Got to Get You Into My Life
4: Because
3: I Should Have Known Better: Hate that kind of arrangements based on this cheesy harmonica.
3: With a Little Help from My Friends
2: And I Love Her: Besides I having something against this kind of slow songs, there's the fact that, when I was around 6 years old, a Brazilian duo of a poppy genre called "Sertanejo" made a horrible cover of this song, which was the main theme of a soap opera and became a great hit here. So, every time I listen to this track, I can't help remembering that "Eu Te Amo" song.
2: Come Together
1: Polythene Pam
1: If I Fell: Nothing against it, but its not better than my next option for the list "Good Morning Good Morning".

I agree with the wild card round. We might make it next week! Maybe there's not so many participants for it, but I think making this so early can lead to some (enjoyable for many of us) surprises.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 19

If any non-participants (so far) are reading this, would a wild card round interest you to join the game?

It just doesn't make sense to me to do it next week because we've only added a few more voters and the songs will quickly get the boot again. But, if it adds more participants I'm all for it.
