Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I might have been a little quick to give 1983 the title of best songs-year of the 80s, because 1984 is a worthy contender even though we lost Count Basie, Ernest Tubb and Marvin Gaye that year. Since it's also the year the lovely Scarlett Johansson was born, I think it's a great year. Enjoy voting.

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per song/album. The deadline is midnight on the 30th of June. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 1984 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1984 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Has anyone else put all the songs on Double Nickels on The Dime on their Master Playlists? It's hard to pick out individual gems from that album for the song list. Each song is a great bumper when you're shuffling tracks.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Stephan,

Referring to your introductory statement, I'll have to check the dates, but is it possible that Scarlett Johansson is the reincarnation of Ernest Tubb?

Albums

1. Replacements - Let It Be
2. R.E.M. - Reckoning
3. Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive?
4. Pretenders - Learning To Crawl
5. Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow
6. Smiths - s/t
7. Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Rattlesnakes
8. Husker Du - Zen Arcade
9. Prince - Purple Rain
10. Run DMC - s/t
11. Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos
12. The Bangles - All Over The Place

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

@John

I think most of the versions on Hatful of Hollow are different than the versions on other albums or did not appear on other albums (other than greatest hits or best ofs).

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Here's three more albums I forgot. They should be a bit higher on my list, but that would be too confusing (if this isn't bad enough already):

13. Meat Puppets II
14. Guadalcanal Diary - Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man
15. The Long Ryders - Native Sons

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Paul: If the reincarnation process takes 2 months and 16 days, possibly.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Oh, and Meat Puppets' II is from 1983.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I wish I had voted for it last month, then. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm going to look at Scarlett a bit differently now.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

From Wikipedia:
By the release of 1984's Meat Puppets II, the bandmembers "were so sick of the hardcore thing," according to Bostrom. "We were really into pissing off the crowd." The band experimented with acid rock and country western sounds. While the album had been recorded in early 1983, the album's release was delayed for a year by SST.

It's a 1984 album at RYM too, so I guess it's another AM error...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

SONGS:

1. New Order - Thieves Like Us
2. Frank Zappa - Truck Driver Divorce
3. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
4. Frank Zappa - Sharleena
5. Frank Zappa - Sinister Footwear II
6. Minutemen - Viet Nam
7. Minutemen - Nature Without Man
8. Minutemen - #1 Hit Song
9. Minutemen - Corona
10. Tears For Fears - Shout
11. Minutemen - The World According Nouns
12. Minutemen - History of the World Part II
13. Minutemen - This Ain't No Picnic
14. Tones on Tail - Go
15. U2 - Pride (In the Name of Love)
16. Minutemen - The Big Foist
17. Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days
18. Madonna - Material Girl
19. Thomas Dolby - Hyperactive
20. Minutemen - Jesus and Tequila

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Still, we're sticking to the AM classifications. And no worries Paul, II made it to the final 100. You can give them a good spot in december.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Before voting,I'll wait for that copy of 'Stop Making Sense' to arrive in the mail - hopefully,it's as good as John thinks it is. And maybe a cheap copy of Heartbeat City might do me...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

It'll change the way you hear the Talking Heads. But, I really recommend renting the film. If you have Netflix it's in their instant watch catalog.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Albums first, songs will come later.

Had to make two significant changes to my top 20 albums (I got Blue Nile listed 1983 and Hatful of Hollow as a compilation would not qualify, if I'd have the say):

Albums:

1 - David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees
2 - The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow
3 - The Smiths - The Smiths
4 - R.E.M. - Reckoning
5 - Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive?
6 - Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
7 - Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Rattlesnakes
8 - The Blue Nile - A Walk Across The Rooftops
9 - Cocteau Twins - Treasure
10 - Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
11 - Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance
12 - U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
13 - Talk Talk - It's My Life
14 - Sade - Diamond Life
15 - Midnight Oil - Red Sails In The Sunset
16 - Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.
17 - Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade
18 - The Replacements - Let It Be
19 - Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
20 - Pretenders - Learning To Crawl

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

1. The Replacements - Let It Be (#60 on my last all time list)
2. Prince - Purple Rain (#59 on my last all time list)
3. Husker Du - Zen Aracde (~114)
4. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA (~119)
5. Echo And The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (~120)
6. The Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime (~127)
7. The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow (~179)
8. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
9. REM - Reckoning
10. Madonna - Like A Virgin
11. The Smiths - The Smiths
12. Lloyd Cole - Rattlesnakes
13. Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive?
14. The Cocteau Twins - Treasure
15. Van Halen - 1984

I always think about cutting it off where the quality really drops off for me, which in this case would be after #13. I'm just worried the few points I'm giving to Cocteau Twins or Van Halen will push it just a little over an album I put higher on the list.

Yeah, actually, stop giving points after #13 for me.

Songs:
1. Prince - When Doves Cry
2. The Replacements - Unsatisfied
3. The Replacements - Black Diamond
4. The Replacements - Answering Machine
5. U2 - Pride
6. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA
7. Echo & The Bunnymen - Silver
8. Van Halen - Jump
9. Husker Du - Never Talking To You Again
10. Prince - Let's Go Crazy
11. Prince - Purple Rain
12. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark
13. Bruce Springsteen - Cover Me

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Yeah, I don't list albums just to list an even amount either.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Do you know Les Rita Mitsouko ?
This duet was one of the best French acts of the '80s
they were totally crazy
here is their biography

In 1984 they had a tremendous hit with this song

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

what a blushingly delayed but sharp-edged embuscade by the pop gods, nicolas: that song was supposed to be among my 20ups-of-85 since he became a hit in germany that year as well, but now I'll have to force it upon Stephan (once again ) to accept another re.edited song list of mine which would sound like this:

((S))

01. The Killing Moon. Echo And The Bunnymen
02. Sleepwalkers Woman. Scott Walker
03. What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend. The Special AKA

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

And the Europop-pop
Makes me dizzy
And I just can't stop-stop
'Til it's finished
And I don't know what-what
You find funny 'bout the Europop
And the love of money

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I don't know why Catherine Ringer (Rita Mitsouko's singer) picked that fake Spanish accent but that is one of the song's many charms
The clip is very , very 1984

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Wikipedia says: "'Marcia Baïla' is an homage to Argentinian choreographer and dancer Marcia Moretto, with whom Catherine Ringer had studied and performed in the 1970s."
maybe this explains it..?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

yes of course, but the fact that she picked that song with that way of singing for one of their first singles is a proof of their genius/crazyness

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

absolutely

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Guitar player Fred Chichin died a few months ago
He was a good musician, a walking music encyclopedia and a very gentle and good man in his interviews

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

and he was hot, too...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

yes, hotter than Catherine I have to admit

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Just caught the discussion on Meat Puppets II...

It actually was listed as a 1983 release on RYM until I brought up the issue, and it got changed to 1984. I still think 1984 is the correct release year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I have an important request

I think that Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas is from 1985. It is listed in RYM as 1985 and I think (but cannot confirm because I don't own it anymore) it was credited as 1985 on the Cd sleeve.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

You should post that in the "Report errors" topic. To make it easy (or hard, depends on how you look at it) we always use AM dates in this competition, so it'll count for 1984.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

*checks other lists*

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Queen Is Dead will, perhaps, win the 1986 poll.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Save bet, I'd say.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Stammer's and Tremolo's lists are both fantastic, btw.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Back at you sonofsamiam. I've expanded my listening pallette scanning a lot of your past lists.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Who's this Arvo Part guy so many people are listing high?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I'm not ready to post my lists yet as I'm still waiting for a few 1984 albums to arrive in the mail, but I thought I'd share a 1984 song that I have only recently heard but that has completely taken my breath away. I only see it listed on sonofsamiam's list, and it's not exactly a notorious song, but it is nonetheless brilliant. Few songs have the soaring majesty of "Dazzle" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, a pop song set to conquer the world. The elegantly orchestrated beginning soon opens up into a triumphant four on the floor venture into pure jubilation. God, I LOVE it when songs completely turn me inside out like this.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

I'm not an expert on Arvo Pärt (but eager to learn more) so I'm copying this first sentence from Wikipedia:
"Arvo Pärt is Estonia's most renowned composer, working in a minimalist style that employes tintinnabulation and hypnotic repetitions that is also influenced by the intellectual counterpoint elements of European jazz, but fits a European-American post-modernism rather than an example of 'world music'."

Tabula Rasa is currently the 36th best album of all time according to RYM voters. I love it too, but the second version of Fratres is unnessecary I think.

Great call, Moonbeam, glad to see someone else acknowledge this wonderful song.

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: THE SMITHS “Hatful of Hollow”

My favourite Spanish song of 1984: Alaska y Dinarama’s "Cómo pudiste hacerme esto a mí"

Once upon a time there was a “Crucial Three” in Madrid (as the one in Liverpool). The sharp lyricist Nacho Canut, the composer with a gift for infallible melodies Carlos Berlanga and the striking-looking lady with an avid willing for stardom, Olvido Gara “Alaska” (her nickname came from the line “but she’s not afraid to die / all of her friends call her Alaska” of Lou Reed’s “Caroline Says II” . They came from well-off families with intelligentsia background (Carlos was the son of a well-known Spanish filmmaker), they were inquisitive, modern and sophisticated and they paved the way for the Spanish youth of the late seventies-early eighties that crystallized in “Movida Madrileña”: a youth willing to run away from the Spanish cultural delay (due to Franco’s dictatorship) and to embrace every sign of modernity coming from Europe and USA.
This crucial three became involved first in Kaka de Luxe, the first Spanish punk band that disbanded after releasing an only EP in 1977, and secondly in Alaska y Los Pegamoides, a groundbreaking band that evolved from a colourful new-wave sound to a more aggressive goth-rock sound. The discrepancies between Carlos Berlanga and Eduardo Benavente split the band in two, the later forming his own goth band, Parálisis Permanente. Carlos Berlanga created then Dinarama, his own project to develop “his conception of pop cosmopolite and hedonist, intelligent and commercial, elegant and frivolous that combines references from diverse fields – music, movies, literature – in sound capsules with immediate effect. The erudite “tawdrism” or how to be a star in a country of yokels” (Juan Cervera for Rockdelux). Nacho Canut and Alaska joined him soon after becoming Alaska y Dinarama.
“Deseo Carnal” (“Carnal Desire”), their second album released in 1984 is now considered their best effort. And their commercial breakthrough too, achieving the recognition of massive audiences despite the not-so-hidden gay thematic (a fact unthinkable only a few years before). But the immediate reactions from the critics were furious labelling them as sell-outs focusing mainly on the glossy orchestral arrangements. The answer from Carlos Berlanga: “Nowadays it scandalizes more adding violins and trumpets than playing gothic music. The punk is assimilated by the society, but the Philadelphia sound is still frowned upon”.
I’ve selected the album opener (maybe not the best song in the album, that price could belong to “Ni tú ni nadie”) because it’s the most representative of the sound of band and album. “Cómo pudiste hacerme esto a mí” (“How Could You Do This to Me” is the equivalent in song to an Almodóvar movie: melodramatic, excessive and kitsch. The instrumental backing included a mélange of synthesizers and sequencers Eurodisco-style and cheesy orchestral arrangements TV-melodrama style. And the story, sung as a duet with Carlos as the narrator and Alaska portraying the betrayed lover, is an overdramatized tale of infidelity and murder. Just like Almodóvar, you see. Or, in Juan Cervera words for Rockdelux, “a classic short film of jealousy, cheat and punishment compressed in three and a half minutes of chemically pure pop”.

CÓMO PUDISTE HACERME ESTO A MÍ
Composers: Carlos García Berlanga / Ignacio Canut
Performer: ALASKA Y DINARAMA
First release: 1984 (“Cómo pudiste hacerme esto a mí” single)
Length: 4’05”

Ella lo vio salir de allí,
ahora sabía la verdad
y se decidió.

Loca de celos le siguió
tras apuntar la dirección,
resistiéndose a llorar.

No me arrepiento,
volvería a hacerlo,
son los celos.
No me arrepiento,
volvería a hacerlo,
son los celos.
No.

No me arrepiento,

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME

She saw him coming out from there,
now she knew the truth
and she made up her mind.

She pursued him, mad jealous,
after writing down the address,
holding back the tears.

How could you do this to me?
I could have loved you till the end,
I know you will regret this.

The empty street, the perfect night,
he couldn’t dodge a car with its lights off,
a sharp blow
and suddenly it’s all over between them.

She didn’t even look,
she would never go backwards,
there wouldn’t be a second chance.

How could you do this to me?
I could have loved you till the end,
I know you will regret this.

The empty street, the perfect night,
he couldn’t dodge a car with its lights off,
a sharp blow
and suddenly it’s all over between them.

I don’t regret it,
I’d do it again,
this is jealousy.
I don’t regret it,
I’d do it again,
this is jealousy.
No

And to emphasize the connection Alaska-Almodóvar the (in)famous pee scene from the very first Almodóvar movie with a young Alaska (16-years old!) playing the part of the pissing punk girl. The ones that only knew the (more polished) latter movies by Almodóvar may be surprised by the bad taste displayed in his first movies. Warning: some viewers may find the images disturbing.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

sonofsamiam: Meat Puppets is (erroneously) in the 1983 list, and made the top 100. I've moved everything under it one spot up.

miguel: I can't allow live songs from Talking Heads into the rankings, unless those songs are new.. which they're not. This means you've got a chance to submit 4 more songs. Or not. Up to you.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Slush: Same as for miguel, "Life During Wartime" and "What A Day That Was" were released earlier.. I don't think live versions should be allowed when the regular version is on AM. If everyone disagrees though, I could always allow it. Just seems strange to me as songs could technically enter the final 100 twice.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Of course, Slush, “Ocean Rain” is a terrific album, it’s the “Forever Changes” of the 80s. And I hope that it could reach the Top Ten seeing the lists so far (although the battles of “Rains” would end for sure with the victory of the “Purple” one). And probably even “The Killing Moon” could get the #1 (I hope so).

3. Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

looks good, Honorio. Treasure breathes down its neck though.
..thrilling. both would be highly desirable
(which reminds me of the friggin Crazy Rhythms vs Get Happy!! dilemma in the 1980 poll. sigh...)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

and now, apparently, pop elton's top 5 has managed to upend the previous score. as I said before, thrilling...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

pop elton: Take On Me is erroneously listed as 1985 on AM, but we're going to stick to this date anyway.

Netjade: Are you seriously compiling all of this as well? That seems rather pointless..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Ocean Rain is astonishing
I've heard it for the first time today. I didn't like Heaven up here (too freezy and gloomy , too 1981 for me) but Ocean Rain is very good (and it's usually not my kind of music)
It'll probably be in my top 10 (of '84 of course)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Hi I'm new here and this is my first post ever. Acclaimed Music is a pretty damn good website and this topic caught my eye. I haven't heard every acclaimed album from this year but some of my all time favorites came out in 84, so here's my little list.

Albums

1. Let It Be - The Replacements
2. Double Nickles on the Dime - Minutemen
3. Zen Arcade - Husker Du
4. Reckoning - R.E.M.
5. Ocean Rain - Echo & The Bunnymen
6. S/T - The Smiths
7. Hallowed Ground - Violent Femmes
8. Ride the Lightning - Metallica
9. The Las Vegas Story - The Gun Club
10. S/T - Run D.M.C.

Songs

1. I Will Dare - The Replacements
2. The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen
3. This Ain't No Picnic - Minutemen
4. Unsatisfied - The Replacements
5. Don't Go Back To Rockville - R.E.M.
6. Chartered Trips - Husker Du
7. Vietnam - Minutemen
8. Pink Turns To Blue - Husker Du
9. Pretty Persuasion- R.E.M.
10. Favorite Thing - The Replacements
11. Eighties - Killing Joke
12. Harborcoat - R.E.M.
13. Boys of Summer - Don Henley
14. My Heart and The Real World - Minutemen
15. Jump - Van Halen

I know, not really diverse. I probably could've just listed the tracks off of Let It Be and been happy with my song list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Welcome to you Beef Supreme and thanks for your contribution !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

"pop elton: Take On Me is erroneously listed as 1985 on AM, but we're going to stick to this date anyway."

OK, then I give two points to Madonna's Material Girl. Ghostbusters get still only one point (I want that it will be last on the list).
I hope Take on Me have chances to make the final top 100 of 80's (from 85 list) but I really doubt it. Maybe it will reach to top 100 worst songs list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

It will be my #3 of the year, so it should at least stand a chance.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

1984, the year I bought my first LP, the dear Forever Young by Alphaville, which was my favourite album for a long time. And I'm not ashamed of still loving it. It almost made my top 20 albums, and the Forever Young single made the top 10 songs.

I think 1984 was a great year, but there are also several acclaimed albums I don't get/like. Here are no albums by Minutemen (close), Replacements (not close) or Husker Du (nowhere near). No Echo and the Bunnymen either, although the Brits dominate my list.

Albums
1. Prince - Purple Rain
2. Cocteau Twins - Treasure
3. This Mortal Coil - It'll End in Tears
4. Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward
5. The Smiths - The Smiths
6. Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome
7. R.E.M. - Reckoning
8. The Cure - The Top
9. Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA
10. Sade - Diamond Life
11. Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa
12. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions - Rattlesnakes
13. Youssou N'Dour - Immigres
14. The Blue Nile - A Walk Across the Rooftops
15. Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
16. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
17. Madonna - Like a Virgin
18. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
19. Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos
20. Fabrizio De Andre - Creuza de mä

Songs
1. Depeche Mode - Blasphemous Rumours
2. Prince - When Doves Cry
3. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
4. Depeche Mode - Lie to Me

19. Dennis Edwards - Don't Look Any Further
20. Nena - 99 Luftballons

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Very very difficult to rank these. Lots of very good albums (thankfully Meat Puppets II is mistakenly listed as a 1983 album or this month would have been even harder). Biggest surprises: how low Born in the USA and Purple Rain fell. Most dubious inclusion: not Goodbye Cruel World (which is bad EC and the Attractions, but bad EC and the Attractions is still pretty good) but Like a Virgin (some awful filler on there). Most dubious exclusions (maybe): The two Smith albums; I keep thinking one of these days a light bulb is going to go off in my head and I'm going to realize how great they were--but so far, it hasn't happened. Greatest sign of laziness on my part: not figuring out how to put the umlauts in "Husker Du."

Albums:

1) The Replacements - Let it Be
2) REM - Reckoning
3) Husker Du - Zen Arcade
4) Pretenders - Learning to Crawl
5) Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA
6) Los Lobos - How Will the Wolf Survive?
7) U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
8) Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
9) Prince - Purple Rain
10) Ramones - Too Tough to Die
11) Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Goodbye Cruel World
12) Minor Threat - Minor Threat
13) Madonna - Like a Virgin

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Should have songs done early tomorrow morning, would have done it sooner but was at Glastonbury!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

An exciting race for the top 10 again. At least 5 albums still had a chance in the last few days, but in the end Ocean Rain and Double Nickels made it (and Hatful dropped a few spots). The songs fought out a nice battle too, although most of them were already in the top 10 since the start. For the second time one of my top 10 songs drops out of the top 10 by the last ballot (I should just disqualify your list because it was too late Mitchell! ). Oh well. After a year of absence Prince dominates another year with a #1 album and #2, #4 and #8 songs.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1984

Stephan, the song “Canción Mixteca” is listed twice. If you add up the votes from Nicolas and me the song reach a remarkable 31 position. And when you listen the Nic & Hon cover (please be patient, Nicolas, I’m on it) it will reach the number one for sure.
