Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

I think we set a record in Cut 15 with participation! Thank you to all new participants or those that came back and again thanks to all who have participated from the beginning.

JUST A REMINDER: Please look at the rules to see how to format your entry. It makes it a lot easier for me to sort out in Excel. It's important that you use a : instead of a - and even more important that a point number is in front of every song.

Eliminated:

16 points: This Boy
15 points: I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
15 points: Old Brown Shoe
15 points: It's Only Love

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song. Please follow this format to make it easy for me to plug into Excel.

5: Song
5: Song
4: Song
4: Song etc...

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

Agh! I was able to find some mono versions of a few albums in higher quality than I had so I replaced them in ITunes. Well, that screwed up my playlist. I didn't even think about it until now. Oh well, it's only a few albums to reinsert.

A question: Are there any US Beatles fans here who were alive during the Beatles reign? The reason I ask is because I want to know if you prefer the US or UK albums. My dad has all of the UK CD's but rearranged and changed the album title art to put them in the correct US order. I would imagine it would be hard for anyone who only heard the US albums to be able to listen to the UK ones.

5: It Won't Be Long
4: I Want to Tell You
4: I’ll Be Back
3: Birthday
3: Every Little Thing
2: The Ballad of John and Yoko
New votes:
2: What You’re Doing
1: Hello Goodbye
1: And I Love Her
This week I’m going to add three McCartney tunes and, sorry Toni, all of them inside the “funny, happy and sweet” category. “What You’re Doing” is one of the less appealing Macca melodies despite the good drum & guitar arrangement, “Hello Goodbye” is the last of the “silly love songs” in the tournament and “And I Love Her” is a nice little song with a sparse but charming backing of Spanish guitars, bongos and claves but maybe the song-writing (especially the too sentimental lyrics) is a drawback here.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

5: The Fool on the Hill
5: From Me to You
4: The Sun King
4: Long, Long, Long
3: I've Just Seen a Face
3: And I Love Her
2: The Night Before
2: Long Tall Sally
1: Doctor Robert
1: Wait

My least favorite tracks from REVOLVER and RUBBER SOUL make their first appearances on my list. "Doctor Robert" is Lennon-the-worldly-cynic on autopilot, glib and smug and musically uninteresting (especially in REVOLVER's context) to boot. As for "Wait", it's one of the last genuine Lennon/McCartney collaborations, and it plays like something they knocked off to fill out the album - which it probably is. White Lion's 1988 hair-metal hit "Wait" is a better song.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

I would imagine it would be hard for anyone who only heard the US albums to be able to listen to the UK ones.
Humm, John, with all my respects, I find your statement quite odd! I can understand your point because the UK releases did not include the hit singles making some albums weaker that it could have been (the main example was Sgt.Pepper’s that could be a much better album if “Strawberry Field Forever” and “Penny Lane” has been included). But the UK album discography was better in my opinion because:
- The albums came from recording sessions made purposely to record an album (the US releases mixed sometimes unfortunately different sessions). The case of the Stones is quite different, having chosen for the CD releases the original US discography.
- Some albums (as the soundtracks) were quite horrible mixing the Fab Four songs with orchestral versions. I can imagine some US fans cursing for having to skip the orchestral pieces with their old stereo equipments.
- And, the most important, “the cutting up of their albums for the US releases irritated the Beatles, who felt they had "put a lot of work into the sequencing" of the British versions” (taken from Wikipedia).

If you want to re-sequence the Beatles songs I can suggest you the chronological order. Sorry for the long post, but:

2: Doctor Robert

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

Honorio, I'm not saying the US versions are better, I'm saying that US fans who had all of those albums in the 60's are used to those albums and it would sound strange hearing them "out of order". I have all my dad's old US albums and it sounds strange to me hearing Rubber Soul missing a couple songs including the opener Drive My Car. But, to him, it's the opposite.

The UK versions are definitely better. The only reason the US versions are different is because Capitol refused to put that many songs on one album. So, it was basically just a way to milk more money. Yes, even then the record labels were greedy!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

5:Tell Me Why
4:I'll Cry Instead
4:I Call Your Name
4:I'll Be Back
3:I Want To Tell You
3:Love You To
2:Glass Onion
2:Old Brown Shoe
1:Savoy Truffle
1:What You're Doing

Most of these are again ones I can't "sing in my head" despite owning all the Beatles CDs. Exceptions are "Savoy Truffle" and "Glass Onion" which have always been candidates for outtakes if I had been in George Martin's shoes in 1968.

I think "This Boy" was one of my disappointments in this week's cuts. While definitely not "top tier" I think it's better than a lot of hangers-on on my list here.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

I have a couple ideas for how I want this game to end and I'd like your input.

1. Like Survivor where we slowly start eliminating fewer songs.

or...

2. When we get to the top 10 we hold one final poll, this time voting for our favorites. But, until then keep voting off 5 a week.

#1 drags the game out a little longer but #2 changes the rules. I like either option, what do you think?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

My vote goes for option #1. I think if you were to hold one final poll with the top ten, vote splitting occurs, and theoretically, the #1 song could end up with only 15% of the votes. I say save the "vote for your favourite" for the final two.

Just my two cents :)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

5: LADY MADONNA
5: THINGS WE SAID TODAY
4: ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
4: I'M DOWN
3: BECAUSE
3: BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO
2: SUN KING
2: DON'T LET ME DOWN
1: WHAT YOU'RE DOING

*new* 1: LONG TALL SALLY: Probably should've had this on my ballot a while ago.

Re: the ending of the game, it doesn't really matter to me. But Option #2 seems more attractive though.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

Yes, even then the record labels were greedy!
Of course, they’ve been always greedy, and now they got what they deserved.
My option for the end of the game would be the #1.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

Alright - maybe time to get rid of some Beatles song where I prefer other people's versions:

5 - Long Tall Sally:Prefer Little Richard
5 - With A Little Help From My Friends:Prefer Joe Cocker
4 - She Came In Through The Bathroom Window:Prefer Joe Cocker
4 - I Call Your Name:Who ever did a cover of this - I definitely liked it better...
3 - I'm Down
3 - Baby's In Black
2 - You Won't See Me
2 - Birthday
1 - Because
1 - Polythene Pam

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 16

Mamas and the Papas? I liked that version too, but not more.

I hate Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help (even though I'm a huge Wonder Years fan) but I might agree with you that he did a better version of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window... and absolutely Little Richard, it's not even close.

New entry
1: Yer Blues: I went to my post on "Rank the songs from your favorite album" thread and saw this is the lowest positioned song (with the exception of Julia) that is still in the game. So, in the lack of options to vote here, I chose this one. The Beatles have made better acts in relation with blues than this one, like Oh! Darling, Happiness is a Warm Gun and the already eliminated Revolution 1. I really like that rythm change in 2:09 min, but besides that, John wasn't much inspired in this composition.

- I listened once to With the Beatles and Help! this week trying to find some songs to vote here but I didn't. Boy, these albums are much better than I thought! The only song that really made me think: "yes, this is the one I will put in my list!" was our last but one eliminated!

- hehe, sin problema, Honorio! Yo también voté en What You're Doing!

- I prefer the option #1 for the end of the game too!

There's still so many average songs here - just pick a random ten. Not for 3 or 4 weeks will it be wall-to-wall good songs
