Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

"Any Time at All" does NOT belong in this company, and should have stuck around a lot longer. I think it's one of John's best songs, certainly near the top among the early ones.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

I have to agree, Harold!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

5: Long Tall Sally
5: She Loves You
4: Eight Days A Week
4: Glass Onion
3: Long, Long, Long
3: Yer Blues
2: Savoy Truffle
2: Don't Pass Me By
1: Old Brown Shoe- Again a couple from my old list finding their way back. Everything in it's right place. Hey, maybe the Beatles invented that song too! Just kidding.
1: Got To Get You Into My Life

I wasn't going to say anything but it would be cool for some of those people who said they would participate later to jump in. We're getting near the halfway point and good songs are going to start disappearing if we don't get more participants because all it takes right now is for a couple people to dislike a song.

I wasn't too disappointed with any of the songs that left this week. I agree that Any Time At All didn't deserve to go yet but I don't have it really high either. Same goes for Another Girl and Hey Bulldog.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

I would participate, but I have to say that I'm way too unfamiliar with the early Beatles work to make an accurate assessment. What I've heard from that period doesn't really make me want to listen to it either...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

There isn't much early stuff left (and most of it are the hits) so feel free to participate and vote for what you know. I don't have a problem with that and I think we're getting to a point where almost everybody who posts can participate.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

I'm still checking these topics every week, but even though most names are now sounding familiar I really wouldn't be able to tell which is which. I never could keep Beatles songs apart for the most part, and I'm not gonna listen to all their albums to be able to participate a few weeks earlier.. sorry.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Whoa... rough week. "Piggies" is one of Harrison's best -- a clever jab disguised as a silly baroque piece. But the one I'm really peeved at is "The Long and Winding Road", which some of you may be surprised to know is my favorite Beatles song. Sure, my love of it is partly owed to nostalgia -- it was the last song on my 20 Greatest Hits cassette, and I've loved it since I was six or seven years old -- but it's still a great song, with or without Spector's arrangements. I personally prefer the album version to the Naked version; the "lead me to your door" part at 3:20 might just be my favorite moment in the Beatles catalog, when the descending string part enters just before Macca sings "door". Did the Beatles commit anything more heartwrenching to tape than that moment? I don't think so. Jesus... you guys are heartless bastards.

So, it's with a heavy heart that give my picks for Cut #15:

5: LADY MADONNA
5: THINGS WE SAID TODAY
4: ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
4: I'M DOWN
3: BECAUSE
3: I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE PARTY
2: BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO
2: SUN KING
1: DON'T LET ME DOWN

*new* 1: WHAT YOU'RE DOING: Yeah, whatever. I don't feel like commenting.

And to those who aren't contributing here, you should do yourself a service and take time to listen to the Beatles' amazing catalog. You might be surprised at what you discover.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

The Beatles are my favorite band, even all this time, so of course I know all of their songs. However, I can't on Earth see how "Beatles For Sale" can outlast "All You Need Is Love".

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Yeah Anthony - it is a bit hard to believe that 'Long And Winding Road' would get voted off so early. It's top 50 for sure...

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Yeah Midaso, top 50 at least. And boy, it's going to be difficult trying to muster any enthusiasm for this game now that my #1 song is gone.

To those who voted for it -- what's the rationale?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

3: I'll Follow The Sun

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Anthony, I had that same cassette growing up and the only songs I didn't like as much on it were All You Need Is Love and Long and Winding Road. When I was young I didn't know that All You Need Is Love came after She Loves You so I always thought it was cool that they were foretelling She Loves You at the end of All You Need is Love!

You know I have high regard for the entire Beatles catalog so I still like the song but I have two reasons I voted for it. I'm not a huge fan of McCartney's slow stuff and I'm more of a middle period guy. Long and Winding Road has too much of that early 70's singer/songwriter vibe going on. I'd never flip past it, but there are about 165 Beatles songs I'd rather listen to and that's not putting it down.

Hey, you're voting for my #4 in Things We Said Today!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

5: This Boy
5: Old Brown Shoe
4: The Fool on the Hill
4: From Me to You
3: The Sun King
3: It's Only Love
2: Long, Long, Long
2: I've Just Seen a Face
1: And I Love Her
1: The Night Before

I didn't actually used to hate "This Boy", but now that it's been at the top of my stack this long without being eliminated it's really starting to cheese me off...

For the record, I think that every track from BEATLES FOR SALE that's still here absolutely deserves to be; it's an underrated record full of restrained, expertly crafted songs. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT tends to get ranked much higher, probably by virtue of the fact that it's all Lennon/McCartney songs, but I like FOR SALE a little better.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Fair enough, John. (and sorry about the TWST vote).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

A lot of good Beatles songs gone this week (“Hey Bulldog”, “Piggies”, “All You Need Is Love” and, yes Anthony and Midaso, especially the touching “Long and Winding Road”), but we are getting closer to the Top 100 and The Beatles got a lot more than 100 good songs…
Old votes:
5: The Night Before
5: It Won't Be Long
4: Don’t Pass Me By
4: I Want to Tell You
3: I’ll Be Back
3: Birthday
2: I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party
New votes:
2: This Boy: The Beatles were as good with three-part harmonies as The Byrds or C.S.N & Y (although not as good as Wilson brothers), but I can’t find a reason of this song for staying so long while the similar (but better IMHO) “Yes It Is” exited so long before. But, talking about three-part harmonies, I’ll wait a lot for voting out the superb “Because”.
1: Every Little Thing: quite charming kettledrum arrangement Orbison-style (or should I say Spector-style?) but they’ve got better ones.
1: The Ballad of John and Yoko: John Lennon beginning to “look to his navel” (literal translation of a Spanish set phrase that means being egocentric and self-centred), attitude that will dominate a big part of his posterior solo work.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

5: Birthday
5: Doctor Robert
4: Come Together
4: Back In The U.S.S.R.
3: Dig a Pony
3: Old Brown Shoe
2: I Call Your Name
2: I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
1: The Word
1: Don't Let Me Down

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

I think a lot of the appeal of Hard Day's Night lies in the images from the movie that come to your mind. I love This Boy because it makes me think of the great Ringo scene.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Wait a minute.... "There's a Place" got voted off? Where the hell was I when that happened? That one's probably in my top 10 '62-'64 songs!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

5: Julia - I still don't understand what makes this song be considered so good. There's a little bit of a touching, pungent feeling in the vocals and the guitar lines. But, as I've said, it's just a little, nothing sufficient to turn it a good song. I have the impression that there's a lack of something, maybe in the arrangements, maybe in the interpretation. And although it doesn't bother me while I'm listening to it, every time it begins in the album, I am lazy about listening to it. And every time it finishes, I just think: "good, it's already over".

5: Sun King: It has a good climate, and helps constructing Abbey Road's tension and melancholy feelings. But thankgod it's a really short track!

4: For No One: Other one that I couldn't believe while discovering it was considered a classic. The melodies are not so great. The clarinet solo is interesting, but a song can't become a good one only because of something like it. After quite a considerable number of listenings to Revolver, I'm tending to be liking more this track nowadays, but I don't want to abstain myself of participating here only to spare this and other songs anymore.

4: Good Morning, Good Morning: It's a song without substance. Too much noises and guitars try to drive it, but there's really nothing to be said.

3: Got to Get You Into My Life

3: I Don't Want to Spoil the Party

2: Come Together

2: What're You Doing

1: Doctor Robert

1: With a Little Help from My Friends

I'm impressed about the fact of some songs that are generally considered among the Fab's greatest having already been eliminated, like Drive My Car, Michelle, All You Need is Love and, most of all, The Long and Winding Road! The majority of them were victim of a feeling people use to have against funny, happy or sweet songs. There's a collective idea that sadness and other negative feelings are better to be shown on arts than the "positive ones". The only fact of a song being melancholic, for exemple, seems to make much people automatically think it is deep!

Amen, Toni. This is for me one of the best qualities of The Beatles, they retained their positive feeling even when they increased the complexity. Moreover the restricted feelings in music seems to me always fake, I mean, no one is completely sad or completely happy, completely aggressive or completely passive, completely sexual or completely spiritual. Everyone had diversity in itself and the moods may vary in a matter of minutes. But in music this complexity of the human being rarely shows off.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

Wow, those are two great comments and totally portray why the Beatles were so amazing. Nice job guys.

Toni, I agree with your assessment of “funny, happy or sweet songs” being given short shrift…even though “The Long and Winding Road” was at the top of my list. I think it’s crazy that “Drive My Car” and “Any Time at All” are gone, but then I’m sure everyone’s lost some favorites by now.

hopefully, yes

I do like Fool On the Hill a lot.

1: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!

New this week: "Birthday" (I find this song is too well-known for a Beatles song, and I think it's only because it gets played at birthdays...hey, I'll be honest, I usually sing this song at anyone's birthday, but in my opinion, it doesn't stand out as one of their greatest songs), "I'll Be Back" (I've been tearing apart a lot of the songs I think are overrated for awhile, it's time I got back to the older songs that I think are good, but not great), and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" (one of my two or three least favourite songs from Sgt. Pepper...never understood the real draw to this song other than that it's neat that it was based on an old poster)

As for my thoughts on the results of the last "tribal council":

Michelle – completely understandable…one of their most overrated songs. Very hard to believe this was their only song that won "Song of the Year" at the Grammys. What a strange award show.

What Goes On – Good riddance.

Hey Bulldog – I am sad to see this go, as it is one of my faves. Why do people dislike it so much? Is it the barking at the end? Because aside from that, you have to admit, it’s a pretty catchy rocker. At least in my opinion.

Piggies – Oh poor "Piggies." I think I'm the only person who loves this song. Sad to see this one go.

All You Need Is Love – Definitely too soon for this song to get the boot. I think it should have been in the top 50. Didn't even make the top 100! Tsk tsk tsk.

Another Girl – It wasn't on my vote-off list, or even my soon-to-vote-off list, but I'm not that disappointed to see it go.

Any Time at All – Half of those points were from me. And I can see a lot of people are upset by that voteoff. Oh well, to each his own.

The Long and Winding Road – Even though I have never considered this to be one of my favourite Beatles songs, and think it's a tad overrated, I think it deserved a spot in the top 100. Maybe a bit too early for its exit, but I'm not overly disappointed.

Within You Without You – One of the others that I voted for that got kicked off.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

All You Need Is Love marked the beginning of the downturn for the Beatles. From the highpoint of Sgt Pepper's release at the start of June 1967, the rest of that year for them is like this:
All You Need Is Love; Patti Harrison meets Eric Clapton; The Beatles study meditation with the Maharishi; Brian Epstein dies; The Beatles make their Magical Mystery Tour film; George & Ringo start their first solo projects (Wonderwall and Candy); Apple Boutique opens; the Magical Mystery Tour film is broadcast and gets terrible reviews. Not exactly the best six months of their career, eh?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

I own the entire Beatles catalogue but once again most of the ones making my list are those tunes I can't pull up in mental recall despite that. Notes with a few of these...

5 pts. Tell Me Why
5 pts. I'll Cry Instead
4 pts. I Call Your Name
4 pts. I'll Be Back
3 pts. I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
OK but pretty average, nothing I'd miss if it were gone.
3 pts. Glass Onion- Throwaway track
2 pts. Savoy Truffle- Ditto, one of those I'd axe from WHITE ALBUM if I'd been George Martin
2 pts. I Want To Tell You- A bit listless
1 pt. Love You To
1 pt. Old Brown Shoe- Guess I'm not a big "George" fan but this is one of my least favorite tracks on PAST MASTERS 2. (other than ones already eliminated..)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 15

ACK! Just realized voting's over..will carry some over to Cut 16..
