Hi it is DJ Nicolas on WWAM. Good Morning Europe, Good night America, Good evening Australia !
I'm currently making my list and all I can say is the competition is tough...
Ok, let's get started with 1975 and a new entry on number 10. What could be more representative of 1975 that this song ?
Listening to some 1975 songs is like having a heavy meal, an old school French meal like the ones I have when I go to my parents, with every course in the right order : apéritif (alcohool with salt cookies or olives) entrée (starter, either a mixed salad or charcuterie, or both, generally what I eat in one meal), plat (main course, meat or fish with vegetable AND potatoes or rice or pasta), green salad, cheese (4 or 5 different ones), dessert, cofee with chocolate.
With the starters : rosé wine
With the main course and cheese : red red wine.
Sorry for that interlude. 1973-1975 had too much French cheese, sometimes the songs are just too long, but, hey, there are excellent songs too. In fact, 3 songs in my top 20 will appear here.
Let's have a Roman orgy of mid-seventies music before the hordes of punk invaders come and burn everything !
Number 9... Number 9... Number 9...
Number 9 is the Big Little Stevie, still around for the third week; I love that live version posted by John erlier. I love it partly because after the end of the song you can hear the first notes of a great great pre-disco number by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes , "The love I lost"
9. (10) (3 years) Stevie Wonder : Living For The City
No, they are not gone. I won't be the one who'll throw them out because I really love that song, but...(looking out the window)... no, I don't see them coming, we've still got time
Time to get back at it, with the number 5 position, held today by a man who, little by little, is becoming a long-runner in this game. He's been here since 1971 with this very sensual song
5 (1)(5 years) Al Green - Let's Stay Together(1971)
My first 3 songs won't be a surprise for those of you who know me well. The question is : in which order ?
My number 3 is the nb 1 song for 1975 in AM forum.
A good transition between songs 4 and 3 : did you know that David Bowie was a Springsteen fan as early as 1974 (so before Born To Run)? While recording with Visconti in Philly in nov 74 (sessions that would give birth to Young Americans) he asked if he could meet Bruce, but it was difficult to reach the boss because at that time he was living in a trailer.
A very shy and very tired Springsteen finally came all the way from Asbury Park, taking several buses.
Bowie decided to cover "It's hard to be a saint in the city" that was released later on a boxset
Number 2 is a very beautiful and strange song
I can find no link between Wyatt and Springsteen but still they always fight for the top spots in my different lists.
These days, Rock Bottom is my favorite album, and "Sea Song" perhaps the most accessible track in this strange album.
What can I say ? It's haunting, it's touching, it's strange, it's so human and it's alien all the while (especially the finale).
Oh, but I can see clouds of smoke. They're coming.
In an hour or so, they'll take the radio station.
people say they are fierce, merciless, that they shave their head. Their leader is named Travis Buckle.
Now I hear shouts of terror. they're climbing the stairs.
I'm still here with my headphones on.
They're in the room now.
They are led by a young woman, her name is NetjudhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoQ
(silence, end of transmission)

Aerosmith - Dream On (they almost made it with "Walk This Way")
Patti Labelle - Lady Marmalade

Never made it : David Bowie - Young Americans (missed it by little)
aerosmith - Walk This Way (same)
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
Patti Smith - Gloria
Jonathan Richman - Roadrunners (but something tells me we'll have enough punk music afterwards)
10 CC - I'm not in love
I'm very pleased that you placed Thunder Road above Born To Run. I wouldn't have put BTR on the list, but that's my personal taste but I can't argue with Thunder Road at #1!
They are led by a young woman, her name is NetjudhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoQ
now that's what I call an introduction!! and good to be back for another ringadingdinga..((cough)).. dang cascade here on WWAM, as we provide you with the freshest from the year of Californian hotel estrayed, Bulldozer setbacks and the rise of the Starland Vocal Band - PLUS last years' stickiest infinite tricks ponies
10. (--) Night Moves (1976). Bob Seger/The Silver Bullet Band
nj's somewhat in a creamcheesed AOR mood tonight. as I may quote an unknown critic: 1976 (the brief period before Joey Ramone and McLaren) was basically all about hippies from 1969, who had turned into cowboys by 1973, and who now finally emerged as some filthy rich hippie-cowboy-lookalikes on sunchairs with flaky hand mirrors, daiquiris and attorneys right next to them. life on the fast lane as a trademark of incorporated RnR. while workin' on our night moves... salute..
oh, I'd really like to kick your derriere, nicolas, for having omitted Patti Smith and Roadrunner the year before. but one of nj's most severe politics in chart creating sez: the previous #1 shall not be evicted. henceforth...
10 years spinning and still fitting in. coz everybody's humming to the end of Boogie Nights. that's why it's here. that's why we're all here. humming. humping. boogie!! god knows it.
04. (09) Living For The City (1973). Stevie Wonder
a somewhat lousy way to promote his new record, but hey, it will be released September this year as a double album, AND it has future Timbaland samples on it!
there are moments when I consider them as the Kinks of the 1970's. appropriate or not, that northern soul intro alone possesses lots of shell splinters from the netjade soul..
01.(02/03) Sea Song (1974). Robert Wyatt
02.(--/01) Police And Thieves (1976). Junior Murvin
03.(--/01) New Rose (1976). The Damned
04.(09/04) Living For The City (1973). Stevie Wonder
05.(07/10) God Only Knows (1966). The Beach Boys
06.(--/01) Blitzkrieg Bop (1976). Ramones
07.(--/01) The Boys Are Back In Town (1976). Thin Lizzy
08.(--/01) (Don't Fear) The Reaper (1976). Blue Öyster Cult
09.(01/02) Thunder Road. Bruce Springsteen
10.(--/01) Night Moves (1976). Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
Great picks, nicolas, netjade. Left a lot of great material to work with for 1977, a year I unfortunately remember well. My picks for this year wouldn't reflect my actual taste in music ( I saw Kansas and Styx live in 1977 ) for another year.
It's great to see Sea Song do so well! However, for me, it's not really a standout song from Rock Bottom (Last Straw, Alifib and Alife deserve just as much attention).
I really wanted to kick this one off as some sort of symbolic gesture of this new punk music the kids are all talking about but I wouldn't have been honest with myself saying this still didn't belong here.
9. (5) (12 years) 1966 God Only Knows - Beach Boys
Yes it is
to me "Rock bottom" is just one song, especially the B side (sarting with Alifie)
Last poll I put "Darkness on the edge of town ahead of it at the last moment, ina kind of "political" act, but now I think it is my favorite album ever.
Now here's a man on his 12th album and all that practice must have done some good. Even overexposure can't mute the power of this song. This song has alot of good things going for it but to me it is Bowie's tremendous vocals that sends this song soaring.
We'll top it off with a song from the debut of the year from punks-by-default, Television. This'll probably be the longest song to make our charts also.

Sheena Is a Punkrocker - Ramones
Excellent work, Stammer, Nicolas and Netjade (or should I say EpilepticalTraumatizedAbductedMisanthropyc&SelfCenteredGoose?). I’m enjoying this game a lot.
And a top 25 of all-time for me. Sean Lennon has said that one of his memories is his dad pounding this out on the piano. Wish he would have recorded it!

nooo.. really, John.
what a dazzle. free. selection.
and as far as I am concerned, I'd really have no idea where an unnamed song like Rock Lobster could've been fallen into place like this...
Excellent list. I keep being amazed at how close my lists would have been to those of others. There are a few where I would pretty much have chosen all the other songs, but mostly I got at least 5-6 of the same songs.
Actually, EpilepticalTraumatizedAbductedMisanthropyc&SelfCenteredGoose is someone else (who posted here, btw, netjade). I know because I asked him to...
All right, the ball's in my court now. Looks like I have a chance to listen to some more new music before I pick my top 10.
I will be moving soon and cut off from Internet for a few days (the horror!) so I'll try to take care of this soon. I know I can't keep you AMers waiting.
