Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

There are six songs going this week but one was supposed to go last week. To prevent stupid mistakes like that (not saying it won't happen again!) could you all follow this format so I can plug it into Excel and sort? I've been doing this by hand because it's faster than reformatting everyones nominations, but once we get more people involved that's going to become tedious.

So, please follow this format from now on along with any comments you want to add...Thanks! -

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song. Please follow this format to make it easy for me to plug into Excel.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I don't see the computer much on weekends especially these past two weeks because my wife has been in law school finals. But, I wanted to say that I watched the Anthologies on ABC when they were aired and then bought the DVD's although I haven't seen them in years because my sister borrowed them and I keep forgetting to ask for them back. But, I thought they were very well done. However, the Anthology book is awesome and everybody should pick that up. It's a great coffee table book.

5: All You Need Is Love
5: Long Tall Sally
4: She Loves You
4: Eight Days A Week
3: Long and Winding Road
3: Glass Onion
2: Long, Long, Long
2: Yer Blues
1: Savoy Truffle: I'm not a big fan of these Tom Jonesesque Beatles songs. I don't hate them but they just sound so cheesy next to the rest of the Beatles catalog and sound even worse next to the 66-70 stuff.
1: Don't Pass Me By: Another one that has found it's way back to my list, in the correct spot.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I suppose I should finally join in on this game...

5 pts: Birthday
5 pts: Drive My Car

The above are Paul at his self-indulgently "rocky" worst. And I'm a big Paul apologist.

4 pts: Piggies - How is this still around?
4 pts: Doctor Robert - Weak, and not as subversive as John thought it was.

3 pts: Michelle - Barfage.
3 pts: Why Don't We Do It In The Road - Very, very forced.

2 pts: Come Together - Controversial choice alert! This song has never moved me much, and the Chuck Berry rip is pretty shameful.
2 pts: All You Need Is Love - Has not dated well. At all.

1 pt: Back In The U.S.S.R. - I once thought this was clever. Now I race for the skip button.
1 pt: I Need You - Blah.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I'm not a big fan of Come Together either. I've never liked it, in fact it's the biggest reason why it took me years to realize Abbey Road was a great album.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I forgot to add that Tell Me What You See was #48 on my list so that takes the place of Rocky Raccoon as highest to go (Your Mother Should Know was higher too). I've got a feeling my #13 will be gone soon .

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

sonofsamiam, "I Need You" has already been eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

John, I just realized that the reason sonof... listed "I Need You" is that you still have it listed under HELP! as an eligible song on the master list (as well as the list of eliminated songs).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I didn't cross it off my personal list either which makes me realize that I Need You is the highest song to be eliminated off my list at #40. Maybe it's my subconscious that won't let me take it off.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

5: You Can't Do That
5: I Call Your Name
4: All I've Got to Do
4: Any Time at All
3: I'm Down
3: What Goes On
2: I'll Cry Instead
2: Within You Without You
1: I Saw Her Standing There
1: Drive My Car

My new vote this week goes to "Drive My Car". Beep beep'm beep beep yeah.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

Oh, no! So now some of my favorites are beginning to appear on the votes. I was already finding it very strange that songs like my number #1 Savoy Truffle or my number #7 Piggies hadn't been voted still. Actually, I'm still very pleased by the fact that Piggies hasn't been eliminated until this time of the "competition"!
John, I have already lost one of my favorites either... It was last week when I, Me, Mine left the island (wow, I'm realizing that I like all this Harrisson songs people complain about). I think it's at least one of my top 30 Beatles songs.
Every monday or thursday, when I read the results, I think for myself: "next cut I will start to participate again". But the fact is that I have been listening to much more things from other artists and, so, still haven't had time to familiarize to many early Beatles' songs which, I 'm sure, are the only ones I think that deserve my votes. I passed some time voting for their late stuff which I like a little less, and the early ones which I used to vote for were all eliminated massively in these 2 or 3 last cuts (when I was beggining to think that I was the only one who hadn't liked them, they all apeared in the eliminated list in a row)! So, all this means I will retard a little to join the game again!

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

sonofsamiam, "I Need You" has already been eliminated.

OK, swap with "Dig a Pony" please.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

5: Why Don't We Do It In The Road
5: I've Got A Feeling
4: Lovely Rita
4: Baby You're A Rich Man
3: End, The
3: Hey Bulldog
2: She's A Woman
2: Do You Want To Know A Secret
1: Michelle
1: It Won't Be Long

The first two are incomplete songs really. Others in the list feel more like novelty tunes than the great works of THE BEATLES. The remainder are just not my favourites.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

4: Lovely Rita
4: Baby You're A Rich Man
3: End, The

Ouch! Love those tracks.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

3: BECAUSE
2: I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE PARTY
2: BALLAD OF JOHN AND YOKO
1: SUN KING

*new*

1: DON'T LET ME DOWN
A bit on the weak side, lyrically, and the chorus isn't all that engaging. The fact that Matchbox 20 chose to cover it is a bit of an indication that it's not the most musically complicated song in the Fab Four catalog, and not surprisingly, Rob Thomas and co's version isn't that different from the original. Definitely not John's shining moment, if you ask me.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I think if we'd all put our lists out we'd have the worst correlation Neil! Only one or two are near the top but only Do You Want To Know a Secret is close. Why don't you like Lovely Rita?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

Oh, and I wanted to add that I've been watching the Anthology throughout this game (highly recommended to anyone here who hasn't yet seen it), and it has made each vote a bit of a painful sting. Nonetheless, onward we go, eliminating songs by the greatest band in pop music history. (sorry, I'm being a bit of a brat today).

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I could have been fine without knowing that Don't Let Me Down was covered by Matchbox 20.

2: Birthday
New votes:
1: Another Girl: agree with Harold, let’s get rid of some filler in “Help” an album that showed the Fab Four exhausted and insecure about new directions (that they will find in “Rubber Soul”). But let me say that I won’t join the Midaso campaign about getting rid of the “White Album” songs (only joking, Midaso). In fact I love some of the songs of that album that are collecting votes right now.
1: I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party: same about “For Sale”.

About “Anthology” I own the 6 CDs and I’ve recorded in VHS the 9 hours TV show, but I haven’t read the “little” book and I haven’t see the 12 hours DVD version. Anyway maybe I don’t need it, I’ve got already enough bibliography about Beatles, including first official biography (by Hunter Davies), an extensive day by day “Beatles Diary” (by Jordi Sierra y Fabra, inpired – copied – in Schultheiss “A Day in the Life”), a complete guide of songs (by WJ Dowlding, I recommend it strongly!) and the complete lyrics with the Spanish translation. Enough, isn’t it?

1: The Sun King

John - you still have "I'll Get You" listed as an eligible song in the miscellaneous song list at the end!

"The Sun King" brings up an interesting situation, one that I'm sure John and others have thought about: how to deal with the pieces of the ABBEY ROAD suite. We're so used to hearing and thinking about them as parts of a whole that it's difficult to analyze them as individual, discrete compositions for something like this. Some (notably "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window") are relatively fully formed songs, while others ("Mean Mr. Mustard", "Carry That Weight") are fragments or transitional segments. It'll be intriguing to see how long all of them stay in the game, and in what order they start disappearing. (And I'd like to put in a good word for the ringing acoustic riff in "Polythene Pam" and the glorious three-way guitar solos, beautiful harmonies and orchestral flourishes of "The End" as reasons why they should be among the last to go.)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 13

I know what I'm doing with the suite but it is hard to judge it broken up. But, each song is good in it's own right as short as they may be. I'll say that Mean Mr. Mustard is my highest out of them all.

I hope to have all the kinks worked out tomorrow. I wish we could edit our posts!

I’ve hit a point where there are a lot of pretty good songs and it’s hard to draw a distinction.

What I really need to do is listen to all of the remaining catalog and assemble a master list, because we’ve hit the great middle ground of songs that are not terrible and not great. I have no idea when I’ll be able to do that, though…
