Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

It's funny, the further we go the more we agree. Has anybody lost a song you'd place in the top 10 of the Beatles catalog? I see some songs being nominated that I'd place in my top 20-30 but nothing top 10 yet. A few extras this week due to a tie at 11 votes a piece and we've now surpassed 50 songs eliminated.

Good night!:

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

5 points- Back in the USSR
5 points- Don't Pass Me By
4 points- Yellow Submarine
4 points- I Me Mine
3 points- Revolution 1
3 points- Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey: Is it the guitar work that makes me the only one to vote for this or are people forgetting it? Because as a song itself it really isn't good- it's just a good guitar part with stupid words. While most songs on the White Album were effected positively by the India excursion I feel the opposite on this one.
2 points- All Together Now
2 points- Got To Get You Into My Life: The other Revolver song that doesn't seem to fit. It doesn't sound like a Beatles song either. More like a Tom Jones song. Maybe he performed it sometime.
1 point- Long, Long, Long: If Good Night goes this one goes too. It actually builds up into something nice but it takes too long, long, long to get there.
1 point- Ask Me Why: Forgot this one was still here. Don't get this one confused with the great song "Tell Me Why"

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

"Got To Get You Into My Life"?? Oh man.... that's one of my favorites. And the fact that it doesn't sound like anything else is what's brilliant about it. (Those horns are fantabulistic!)

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

Got To Get You Into My Life had heavy influence on the Vegas circuit.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

...And probably bettered by Earth,Wind & Fire

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

5 PTS. LADY MADONNA
5 PTS. MICHELLE
4 PTS. THINGS WE SAID TODAY
4 PTS. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
3 PTS. YELLOW SUBMARINE
3 PTS. DON'T BOTHER ME
2 PTS. I'M DOWN

It's nice to see "RR" get the heck outta Dodge -- it hung around for far too long.

*new*

2 PTS. ALL TOGETHER NOW: Taking "silly" to an entirely new level. This Beatles Survivor cut has been brought to you by the letters ".... e, f, g, h, i, j, I love you..." Yikes.

1 PT. I'LL GET YOU: Cut from the same cloth as most of their other early songs (the "boy-wants-girl" theme, the mid-tempo 4/4, the spot-on harmonies, the I-IV-V structure, etc.), it's actually a decent song, but the tried-and-true formula produced brilliance and it produced bland -- this one is a bit bland.

1 PT. BECAUSE: I'm going a bit out of my comfort zone here -- at the risk of being the monkey who all the other monkeys throw their feces at, I have to give this one a vote for simply being too airy and soft. If this one's the entrance theme at the Pearly Gates, give me Hell's waiting room muzak any day.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

I Wanna Be Your Man (5)
You Can’t Do That (5)
I Call Your Name (4)
Yes It Is (4)
There’s a Place (3)
All I’ve Got to Do (3)
Any Time at All (2)
Ask Me Why (2)
I’m Down (1)
What Goes On (1)

I actually love the song "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey." I know it doesn't have the GREATEST lyrics, but I love everything else about the song... the guitar, the drumming, Lennon's voice, and the way the song makes me just want to get up and dance, or jump, or both, while I air-band the song. So, at least for me, I don't think that this is a song that people are just "forgetting about".

One song that I do suspect is being "forgotten" is "I Call Your Name." Anybody want to defend that one?

I'm finding as the weeks go on, it's getting harder and harder to decide which ones to vote for. This week, my new votes are "I'm Down" and "What Goes On." The former seems kind of like a ripoff of "Long Tall Sally," which I like better and think they do a pretty decent version of (something I can't say about a lot of the cover songs they released). As for "What Goes On," there is only so much I can take of Ringo's masquerading as a country artist.

And to answer your question, no. None of my top 10 faves have been eliminated yet. I wouldn't even say any of my top 30 faves have been eliminated yet, however, I was quite fond of "It's All Too Much," and was quite surprised that it isn't more popular.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

Just out of curiosity, John, which of your top 20-30 favourites have already been eliminated?

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

I don't know how to defend it but I like I Call Your Name a lot. I love those three part songs and that's one of the best. The Beatles were the best at the middle eight.

None of my top 30 have been eliminated I'm just saying some might have been nominated. But, I should really make a list since my bottom ones are done.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

5 points: “Your Mother Should Know”
5 points: “The Night Before”
4 points: “What Goes On”
4 points: “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill”
3 points: “I’ll Get You”
3 points: “All Together Now”
2 points: “Tell Me What You See”
New votes:
2 points: “It Won't Be Long”: hey, boys, “She Loves You” was a really huge hit, have you got another one with lots of “yeh, yeh, yehs”? Well, Brian, what about “It Won’t Be Long”? Mmm, perfect, it will open the next album…
1 point: “Any Time at All”: a quite inspired Lennon melodic line and a good piano part (playing the low notes on the verses and on the guitar solo) but inferior to other songs of this period.
1 point: “Don’t Pass Me By”: let’s begin to get rid of the Ringo-penned tunes. It’s easy because there are only two, this one and “Octopus’s Garden”. I will vote for “Don’t Pass Me By” despite the brilliant fiddle part for being slightly dumber than “Octopus”.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

I’ll admit to a sneaking fondness for “One After 909”…it’s not brilliant, but it’s interesting to hear the Beatles at the end of their career dredge up an artifact from their early songwriting days. I also like “…Me and My Monkey.”

5 PTS
OCTOPUS’ GARDEN
THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

4 PTS
I WANNA BE YOUR MAN
DON’T BOTHER ME

3 PTS
REVOLUTION 1 (I had forgotten we were considering different versions of this one. The single version of “Revolution” might be my favorite Beatles track; this is the stoned version of it, now with craven political backtracking.)
YES IT IS (Did everybody forget this one?)

2 PTS
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET
ALL I’VE GOT TO DO (nifty harmonizing, but, like many of John & Paul’s early songwriting efforts, this one has a bad case of the slows)

1 PT
EIGHT DAYS A WEEK (they were rarely guilty of the sin of recycling their own past efforts…but this one is formula)
ALL TOGETHER NOW

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

I decided to rank them all this morning on an Ipod playlist. That was a big task! I might have some changes on Monday.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

Good idea John - I'll have to do that. Right, what songs have been annoying me this week...

5 - What Goes On:Can't believe I forgot this - a bit rusty on this one...
5 - Octupus's Garden:Ringo's voice is as flat as a pancake
4 - Why Don't We Do It In The Road
4 - The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill
3 - Honey Pie
3 - Don't Pass Me By
2 - Good Morning,Good Morning
2 - Any Time At All
1 - Baby's In Black
1 - Things We Said Today

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

The highest song on my list to be voted off is Rocky Raccoon at #69.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

My first time here since Cut 7 (sorry for missing out twice), and yes I lost a song from my top 10 - "It's All Too Much" is a top 3 for me.

Anyway, here's my list:

5 pts: Please Please Me
5 pts: Drive My Car
4 pts: No Reply
4 pts: If I Fell
3 pts: Ask Me Why
3 pts: Yes It Is
2 pts: Wait
2 pts: It's Only Love
1 pt: I'll Follow The Sun
1 pt: I'll Be Back

I'm surprised to sdee none of my ten choices were knocked out last time or the time before that - hopefully this time things will change

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 10

Great game John but I'm sorry i won't participate -lack of time.
Anyway one of my favorites is already gone : Rocky Raccoon

5 pts: I Me Mine
As bloated and pretentious as George's other LET IT BE contribution is simple and unassuming; pity that one left first.
5 pts: Hold Me Tight
Some of the originals on WITH THE BEATLES (like the first two songs) are severely underrated. This isn't one of them.
4 pts: I Wanna Be Your Man
4 pts: Ask Me Why
3 pts: All Together Now
3 pts: I'll Get You
2 pts: Tell Me What You See
2 pts: I Need You
1 pt: This Boy
1 pt: I'll Get You
