Beatles Survivor: Cut 9

Five songs this week leave the island and we really wanted them gone. All the leaving songs received at least 11 points. I also want to give a thanks to all of those who have actively been participating every week (and those who have joined recently). I've been thinking so much about the lack of voters that I forgot to thank the ones who are keeping the wheels spinning. Thanks!

Eliminated:

Please, Mr. Postman: 15 points
I'm Happy Just To Dance With You: 13 points
Only a Northern Song: 13 points
You Like Me Too Much: 12 points
Slow Down: 11 points

On the verge: Thank You Girl, Your Mother Should Know, Do You Want To Know a Secret, Rocky Raccoon, Good Night

RULES: Vote for 10 Beatles songs assigning 5 points to two, 4 points to two, 3 points to two, 2 points to two and 1 point to two. Please put the point value next to each song.

Comments are very welcome but not required. I'd like it if you give an overall comment but you don't have to.

5 songs will be eliminated every Monday and Thursday and a new vote will begin each day. The deadline for submitting a list is 2PM on each elimination day. In the event of a tie all songs receiving the elimination vote will be eliminated.

As for "Rocky Raccoon", I just don't understand why it hasn't been voted off yet. A quick glance at the voted-off list and the trends are obvious -- up to this point, the types of songs getting the proverbial boot have been: 1) the covers 2) the useless filler, and 3) the "silly" songs -- surely "RR" can be placed in the latter category, can't it?

At any rate, the studs and duds of the Beatles catalog are quite apparent from looking at that list.

I posted this at the end of Cut 8:

"I like that Paul's solo work followed the Rocky blueprint rather than Helter Skelter. The last thing we needed in the 70's was another arena rock band. His albums definitely need to grow on you but once you get past that they aren't Beatles albums they end up being pretty great."

I don't really find Rocky Raccoon silly. It's not a serious song by any means but it's not campy like Honey Pie, When I'm 64, Yellow Submarine, Maxwell's Silver Hammer and a handful of others. It's a different kind of "fun" song and I like it. Bungalow Bill too. That's a little more campy but I think they had a good formula for that style of music on the White Album. More Shel Silverstein, less Monty Python.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 9

5 pts: Little Child
A fun little rave-up, but nothing more.
5 pts: Good Night
The Pumpkins lovingly ripped it off for the closing song on MELLON COLLIE ... but theirs is actually good.
4 pts: Thank You Girl
4 pts: I Me Mine
3 pts: Hold Me Tight
3 pts: I Wanna Be Your Man
2 pts: Ask Me Why
2 pts: All Together Now
1 pt: I'll Get You
1 pt: Sgt. Pepper's ... [Reprise]

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 9

That's one of the few Pumpkins songs I like. Billy should have let Iha and D'arcy sing more.

5 points: “Your Mother Should Know”
5 points: “Thank You Girl”
4 points: “The Night Before”
4 points: “What Goes On”
3 points: “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”
3 points: “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill”
2 points: “I’ll Get You”
2 points: “All Together Now”
New votes:
1 point: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)”, this one falls into the Anthony category 2) “useless filler”.
1 point: “Tell Me What You See”: in fact it’s quite charming, especially the easy-listening flavour of the keyboard part, but Macca wrote much better songs.

Respect to Anthony categories I won't vote for more songs into category 1) “covers” because the two remaining covers are simply great (“Long Tall Sally” and “Twist and Shout”). And about “Rocky Raccoon” for sure belongs to category 3) “silly ones” but I’ll wait to vote for it if only for the great honky-tonk piano part played by George Martin.

Re: Beatles Survivor: Cut 9

I’m back (and regretting having missed a couple of cuts).

5 PTS
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (what on earth is this still doing here?)
Good Night

4 PTS
Rocky Raccoon
Octopus’ Garden (why does Ringo get all the psychedelic sea chanteys?)

3 PTS
Thank You Girl*
Sgt. Pepper reprise (I don’t think it’s pointless filler—it does contribute to the structure of the album—but, considered as an individual song, we don’t really need two versions of it)

2 PTS
Little Child*
The Long and Winding Road (sorry…I’ve always thought it was a little too wet to be a classic)

1 PT
I Wanna Be Your Man*
Don’t Bother Me*

* - Of their 1963/64 stuff, I’ve run out of songs that are actively bad; all of these are just...cheesy.

My status chosen based on the "If I can't sing it in my head, it's not REALLY a favorite of mine" standard. I've missed a vote or two and can't believe that "When I'm 64" or "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" are out already.
