Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

The third year of the '80s already. It's the year the first mass production of compact discs was initiated and the year The Smiths formed. Deaths in 1982 include Thelonious Monk, John Belushi, Carl Orff and the release of Grease 2. 1982 is also the year we saw (or my parents did anyway) The Eagles, ABBA and Blondie disband. The year did pretty good without them though, a fair bit better than last year in my not so humble opinion anyway. Good luck!

Please submit at least 5 songs and/or albums, preferably but not necessarily with ranking, lists without ranking will get an average score of 10 points per album. The deadline is midnight on the 30th of April. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

Please have a look at the 1982 album and song lists before voting, as albums and songs listed under 1982 at Acclaimed Music will only be counted in the forum poll if they are included in this month's ballots.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Oooh, I can't wait to get into 1982. One of my 3 favorite years ever!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

It'll be interesting for me making the 1982 list, because when I last made a top 100 list last year, nothing from 1982 made it, but like five or six of them would have made the top 120.

(Next time I make a top 100, the average quality of the list will go up so much. I didn't include anything I picked up after 2005.)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Paul. I think we have a similar situation with the Fleshtones as the Violent Femmes. There are conflicting release dates as either 1981 or 1982 for Roman Gods but my original vinyl copy has a 1981 release date so I had it at #6 on my 1981 list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

I've just picked up Orchestra Baobab's 1982 release "Ken Dou Werente" (or rather the CD reissue Pirate's Choice). I have to admit I didn't know much about the music, I was expecting African rhythms but to my surprise the album is primary influenced by Cuban music, although compared to "Buena Vista Social Club" the songs are longer with lots of guitar and saxophone.

It's an awesome record! If you like Cuban music it's a must-have.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

"Talking Heads- The Name of this Band is the Talking Heads"

What is this album? I always just thought from the name of it that it was a greatest hits

This is gonna be a great year. Not finished listening yet, so have some patience for my votes.

BTW votes: Damn, why don't I have anything from Orange Juice from '82? They get a lot of votes. Well, April ain't over yet, so maybe I can manage to listen to some of that as well ...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

C'MON!
Where are the votes for WHAM - YOUNG GUNS(GO FOR IT)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Stammer - All Music Guide has it as 1982, so I went with that. Probably won't get many votes since it was never put out on CD, which is a shame.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Don't forget Simon & Garfunkel's "Concert In Central Park"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Very good suggestion nicolas, I had almost forgotten about that one.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Well I've listened to it this morning and it is a slight disappointment. The band is great, but the songs inconsistent. "The Boxer" is great though

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Really? It's one of the first albums I ever listened to as a whole, and I think it's great.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

nicolas, you recommended Philip Glass' "Glassworks". I listened to it for the first time this morning and I love it! In return, there are two amazing songs by other artists that I became thinking of that you just have to listen to. (Maybe you can find them at Songza, I can't check from work as the page is not allowed )

John Surman - Edges of Illusion (from "Upon Reflection", 1979)
Anouar Brahem - Vague (from "Khomsa", 1995 or "Le Voyage de Sahar", 2006)

This type of music is severely underrated at AM. If anyone ever stumble upon a critics list including Philip Glass (or similar), then let me know!

(Also, I can't wait until I get to vote for Koyaanisqatsi in 1983.)

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

That album "Glassworks" is really wonderful.
Perfect for a commuter train ride.

2 Prince and The Revolution - 1999

4 Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
5 Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

John: Scritti Politti's The Sweetest Girl is a 1981 song. It ended on #35 last month.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

This will be a fun list since the best song ever (IMO) was released this year.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

1. Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
This is the album that convinced me Bruce Springsteen really was a great artist. Most of his biggest albums have that 'big' arena rock sound I don't really get into, but Nebraska scales it down and really brings out his bluesy influences and his vocal subtlety.

2. The Cure - Pornography
I picked up Cure tickets for May *before* I knew the full extent of how awesome The Cure were.

3. Michael Jackson - Thriller
I have trouble with this album because it can be a little hard to separate the art from the artist. Why couldn't Michael Jackson have stayed normal? He was one of the most liked people in the industry.

4. Roxy Music - Avalon
I don't get For Your Pleasure. It's one of those 'This sounds good, but plenty of other people do the same thing better. But this one really sounds unique and new wavely with a lot of finely crafted songs.

5. Mission of Burma - Vs.
My first reaction when I picked this up two weeks ago: "This sounds like Gang of Four." My second: "This is awesome."

6. Prince - 1999
I don't know why I can't get into 1999 the same way I can get into Purple Rain and Sign O The Times. Maybe because it's his most single oriented album.

7. Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
Costello tones down his sound and makes it more nuanced. I like that Costello explored his soundscape more as his career progressed, but I don't like that it makes him hardly play anything from his first three albums at shows. A good album but the start of his meanderings.

8. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
I'd never heard Iron Maiden before. From their audience, I assumed they were just a loud banging metal band. I had no idea A) That they were good, B) Their songs actually had some sort of melody, and C) That Metallica ripped them off as a habit. I don't think I can ever listen to the Black Album again, for the same reason Annie Hall ruined Seinfeld for me.

9. Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out The Lights
I can't get into this one the same way I can get into Unhalfbricking. There are some great songs but they seem so constrained by their genre to the point of cheekiness at some points.

10. The English Beat - Special Beat Service
Last time I listened to this it annoyed me, but I still like the wild vibrant vocals and the sax parts. The annoying parts are when they try to sound like raggae.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Slush - yeah but too bad no one has voted for it yet - don't worry your #1 will be my #1 also for 1982

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

BillAdama : Great list ! (and not only for putting the Boss at nb 1)

I'm happy that already at least 2 people voted Iron Maiden.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Slick: Spirits In The Material World was on a 1981 album, so it's counted for 1981. I've used your #16 as #15, #17 and #16, etc.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Stammer: As far as I can find out both The Fleshtones and Violent Femmes are 1982 albums, and I will regard them as such.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Stammer: As far as I can find out both The Fleshtones and Violent Femmes are 1982 albums, and I will regard them as such.

Oh, I thought that from the discussion in the separate thread about Violent Femmes debut album, that the release year was unclear and that we would then use the year at AM (1983). All voters probably need a BIG HEADS UP if they're supposed to put it on this month's list.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

I have BEEN a Prince fan. And 1999 was a bomb! So...if someone could squeeze it in at no. 5 (album) and 20 (song) respectively...squeeze...annie get your gun is fun!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Henrik: Oh, I thought it was a discussion between 1981 and 1982..

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

You're right. My bad, Violent Femmes is for 1983 because it's listed as such on AM. Fleshtones is 1982 though, I think.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Good to know there's some support from you Midaso. I admit, I kinda made that comment to remind people about "Temptation" being an '82 song

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Stephan: That's cool about the Fleshtones. At least they'll get a few more points with my vote. I checked and I don't see any changes in the overall top 10 by dropping the Fleshtones off my 1981 list.

Paul: Yes it is a shame but almost all of the garage band revivalists (Vipers, Plasticland, Cynics, etc.) from this era have been all but forgotten. The Fleshtones actually put out a fairly decent album this year (2008) though.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Slush, do you mean New Order's "Temptation"? If so, rest assured that it will appear in my list.

I can't believe no one has voted for the best song off 'Combat Rock'. So,for that you should go 'Straight To Hell'...

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

I'm starting to reason this board combined with my completionist obsession just may not be a good thing... :)

This absolutely applies to me. Any time I start to feel I have a handle on my music knowledge, whole new worlds open up.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Sonofsamiam: I'm afraid Penguin Café Orchestra is a 1981 record, so it won't be included for this year. Last month it got one #8 vote by Ze.

Hm, it's listed as a 1982 Bubbling Under album on the site, so I figured it was safe. That's OK though, as I doubt it will get any more votes. Here's my revised list:

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Okay, question about Orange Juice.

Why the **** is the cheapest I can find You Can't Hide Your Love Forever like $45 used?!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

It's out of print for some reason and import only. I'm surprised they didn't reissue it when they put The Glasgow School which is an overview of the band.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

So put that with Lucinda Williams s/t and Neil Young's Time Fades Away as 'Albums which badly need reissues and haven't gotten one for no particular reason, unless the label hates money.'

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Was out of town for a couple days so I missed the question initially, but yes Moonbeam, I definitely mean "Temptation." I'm gonna listen to it again right now and bask in its absolute glory.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

And I guess I could've actually answered the questions by specifying that I'm talking about New Order's "Temptation." Whoops.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

The results will be in several days late again, and I'm thinking of posting 1983 tomorrow rather than the 9th when I get back. But I'll leave it up to you guys. What do you think? 23rd of 9th?

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

I have no preference. On one hand I'm excited to see what I may have missed in my efforts to get all the coolest 1983 albums in advance, but on the other hand it'll just mean a longer wait until 1984.

If I could lay my hands on a copy of R.& L. Thompson, "Shoot out the lights", I'm pretty sure I'd rank it highly, but there doesn't seem to be one in the neighbourhood, and listing it just because I like other Thompson albums would be cheating

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Stephan, I think you should wait with the 1983 thread until you get back from the holiday. It's probably the least confusing alternative.

Do we still have to send in our 1982 lists before the end of the month?

Have a great time in Egypt!

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

FAVOURITE COMPILATION: MADNESS “Complete Madness”

My favourite Spanish song of 1982: La Mode’s "Cita en Hawaii"

The “movida madrileña” (that can be translated as “Madrid move”) was the dominant scene of Spanish music at the time. The seminal band that set the scene was Kaka de Luxe (“Poo de Luxe”), the only Spanish band that played punk in 1977. After a short and unsuccessful career (but largely influential) the bands formed by the Kaka de Luxe ex-members defined the “Movida” sound: Alaska y Los Pegamoides, Radio Futura and La Mode. La Mode was the personal project of Fernando Márquez “El Zurdo” after the (relative) failure of Paraíso (“Paradise” that released an only single, the era-defining “Para ti” (“For You”). The first album of the band, “El eterno femenino” (“The Eternal Feminine”) was its best, an arty affair that put refined lyrics in a hedonist pop context. In David Saavedra words for Rockdelux: “It was a kind of concept work that captured the fascination and incomprehension of the opposite sex –from a masculine perspective-, but also it was a contradictory chronicle of the youth from a Madrid that just opened for modernity. A new urban universe with its luxuries and miseries, its nights and its ups and downs”.
The song selected is “Cita en Hawaii” (“Rendezvous in Hawaii”), showcasing his fascination for exotic environments (as other synth-pop stars at the time) and his trademark sophistication of common love stories. While in “Aquella canción de Roxy” he turned a one-night car fucking into an immortal love story or in “El último juego en la ciudad” he turned the city into a big chessboard to stage the boys hunting for girls at night time, in “Cita en Hawaii” he sublimated the final point of a relationship. Saavedra again: “the delicious pop melodrama about a last meeting: the girl that searched for the future in a cup of tea and the assumption of the pain as the counterpoint to the fantasy of a generation that needed it like the air to breathe”.

CITA EN HAWAII
Composers: Mario Gil / Fernando Márquez / Antonio Zancajo
Performer: LA MODE
First release: 1982 (“El eterno femenino” album)
Length: 3’19”

No he vuelto a verte
desde aquella tarde
que nos citamos en Hawaii.
Llovía a mares
sobre la avenida,
pedimos un té con croissant.

Tus manos frías,
tu rostro mojado,
sin hablar me decías adiós.
Yo no sabía
y te pregunté la razón.

No respondiste,
me hiciste pucheros
y no te dejaste besar.
Por no enfadarme
miré aquello cuadros
que recordaban a Gauguin.

Seguías callada,
parecías buscar
el futuro en la taza de té.
Luego te fuiste,
no sé todavía por qué.

No he vuelto a verte
desde aquella tarde
que nos citamos en Hawaii.
Tú me querías,
yo te quería,
no he vuelto a quedar en Hawaii.

No he vuelto a verte
desde aquella tarde
que nos citamos en Hawaii.
Tú me querías,
yo te quería,
no he vuelto a quedar en Hawaii.

RENDEZVOUS IN HAWAII

Last time I saw you
it was that evening
of our rendezvous in Hawaii.
It was pouring
down the avenue,
we asked for tea and croissant.

Your cold hands,
your wet face,
you were saying goodbye without talking.
I didn’t know it,
and I asked you the reason why.

You didn’t answer me,
you pouted,
and you didn’t let me kiss you.
Trying not getting angry
I looked to these pictures
that reminded of Gauguin.

You kept quiet,
you seemed to search
for the future in the cup of tea.
Then you went away,
I still wonder why.

Last time I saw you
it was that evening
of our rendezvous in Hawaii.
You loved me,
I loved you,
I’ve never dated again in Hawaii.

Last time I saw you
it was that evening
of our rendezvous in Hawaii.
You loved me,
I loved you,
I’ve never dated again in Hawaii.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Hey Honorio, what year was "La Canción de Juan Perro?" That's the only Spanish LP I have from the 80s, but it will make my list for said year. Also, what year was the song "Veneno en la Piel?"

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Hi Slush. “La canción de Juan Perro” by Radio Futura was released in 1987. It’s an excellent album and it will be in my list for sure. “Veneno en la piel”, album and song, were from 1990.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

Thanks Honorio. It wasn't released until 1989, 1990, or 1993 depending on which Amazon source you believe. I was hoping "Veneno" would be an 80s song cause it would make my top 5 of almost any year...oh well.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

What style of music is Yazoo? I've been running into it on the top 3000 songs chart and they aren't available on Rhapsody.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1982

I was never able to track down Ornette Coleman's Of Human Feelings. Good chance it would be on my list if I'd been able to hear it. Numbers 6, 7, and 8 below are essentially in three-way tie. My serious side tells me I should move Crenshaw and Dexys Midnight Runners out of the top five, but my fun side says don't move them; my fun side obviously won out.

1) Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
2) Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
3) Lou Reed - The Blue Mask
4) Marshall Crenshaw - Marshall Crenshaw
5) Dexys Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay
6) Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights
7) Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
8) The Clash - Combat Rock
