Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Welcome to a spinoff of the original Survivor: Beatles Survivor! Every Monday and Thursday we will vote for the 10 songs we want to boot off the island we were abandoned on when our yellow submarine sprung a leak.

Rules:

Vote for 10 songs. Assign 5 points to two songs, 4 points to two songs, 3 points to two songs, 2 points to two more and 1 point to two more.

Leave a comment for your two 5 pointers. Feel free to leave more but you are only required to write about the top (worst?) two.

Vote until when the next cut is unveiled on Monday or Thursday. 5 songs will be eliminated each cut day.

Use the discography below for eligible songs and have fun!

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Great list, John! Well done.

This is your anal-retentive pal with just a few additions.

You’ve left out the two Carl Perkins songs from Beatles for Sale: “Honey Don’t” and “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby.”

Also missing are the two George Harrison songs on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack: “Only a Northern Song” and “It’s All Too Much.”

You’re probably a bigger Beatles fan than me, so maybe these songs were excluded for some arcane reason I don’t know. Or maybe it’s just a great big honkin’ list that’s hard to keep track of (believe me, I’ve been there).

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Nope, just missed them from copying and pasting from an online discography. I don't know why they were missing. I'll add them to the Cut #2 and hope that everyone sees them this time around. I knew I'd miss some. Thanks!

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

A couple more mistakes- Love You To is on twice. Also the single Revolution should be Revolution not Revolution 1.

Alright, I'll start this baby as a template.

5 points- You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)- It's fun(ny) but when judging against the rest this has to be #1 on the hitlist.
5 points- Devil In Her Heart- The worst of the covers and sounds like any other band at the time period, maybe worse.
4 points- When I Get Home
4 points- Dizzy Miss Lizzie
3 points- When I'm Sixty-Four
3 points- Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
2 points- Run For Your Life
2 points- Thank You Girl
1 point- Long, Long, Long
1 point- For You Blue

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 Love Me Do - Just to simple
5 She Loves You - too Simple
4 Blue Jay Way
4 Any Time At All
3 If I Fell
3 I'm Happy Just To Dance With You
2 Not A Second Time
2 Little Child
1 It Won't Be Long
1 P. S. I Love You

This is gunna be a super hard thing for me to do. I love the beatles even when they are "Too simple" Like Ive suggested. But mostly I'll try to clear up there post rubber soul days. Not that before that wasnt good. I love early beatles, just late beatles more.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

I understand that it's really hard to write about songs that you have no feelings for. That's why I'm going to change the rules to say that no comments are necessary but try to write an overall thought and always comment whenever you do have something to say about the song. There isn't anyway to make people do that but I hope you all would.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

The useless tracks, the 'nothing' tracks come first:
1)Wild Honey Pie:About as useless as a track can be - just there to make up the numbers
2)Dig It:Another 'nothing track' - too short to be useful
3)Maggie Mae
4)Her Majesty
5)Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band(Reprise)
6)Why Don't We Do It In The Road
7)Birthday
8)Baby's In Black
9)Mr. Moonlight
10)Don't Pass Me By

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

I should have put Dig It on my list (the bottom 20 are kind of interchangeable) but I really like Wild Honey Pie. It just fits perfectly where it is. It's not in the top 150 but I'll let it stay in paradise for a little bit.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Sorry - I meant to do it like this:

5: Wild Honey Pie:About as useless as a track can be - just there to make up the numbers
5: Dig It:Another 'nothing track' - too short to be useful
4: Maggie Mae
4: Her Majesty
3: Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band(Reprise)
3: Why Don't We Do It In The Road
2: Birthday
2: Baby's In Black
1: Mr. Moonlight
1: Don't Pass Me By

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Well, I can write about music I have negative feelings for. (Oh, I’ll be honest—I can’t shut up about anything today.)

5 PTS: Till There Was You
He’s a Music Man, but he doesn’t know the territory. The Beatles’ most forgettable song, from a very forgettable musical (which I only remember because we did it in high school).

5 PTS: A Taste of Honey
Punster John Lennon sometimes referred to this as “A Waste of Money.” He was right. Paul sings the verses like a slow child’s first piano lesson.

4 PTS: Revolution 9
The worst song actually “written” (if that’s the right word) by a Beatle. “Avant-garde” isn’t the same thing as “aren’t I a clever boy?” Don’t turn me on, dead man.

4 PTS: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Like “Revolution 9,” a (failed) attempt by the Beatles to tackle a different music genre. It would be another decade before a band of white British guys paid proper homage to reggae, though.

3 PTS: Anna (Go to Him)
What “Till There Was You” is to Paul, this one is to John. In the years when it was unusual for a pop group to be making full-length LPs, they unfortunately felt the need to include a lot of pointless filler like this.

3 PTS: Devil in Her Heart
Stupidest call-and-response ever.

2 PTS: Run for Your Life
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Johnny the homicidal maniac.

2 PTS: Good Night
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Johnny the sentimental dad. (Unfortunately, at least half of his stuff on Double Fantasy sounds exactly like this song.)

1 PT: Maggie Mae
I’m not sure why the Beatles became enamored of song fragments on their last two albums (probably because they couldn’t be arsed to stay in the studio long enough to properly finish them), but many of them work quite well. This one doesn’t.

1 PT: P.S. I Love You
The B-side of “Love Me Do,” it makes “Love Me Do” sound like “Helter Skelter.”

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

There are too many songs we’re dealing with to debate each one, but I’ll just note a few that have already been voted on which I’m actually fond of:

Dizzy Miss Lizzy
If I Fell
It Won’t Be Long
Birthday
She Loves You – “Simple?” Are you effing kidding me?

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Wow, a lot of songs already that might make my top 50 Beatles songs: Mr. Moonlight (I love the opening), Baby's In Black and P.S. I Love You.

I don't like Good Night that much either but I do like Beautiful Boy. I'm glad you can comment Schleuse. I'm definitely going to comment as much as possible but I like the Beatles catalog so much that it's hard to write anything. I think the majority of the writing is going to come in the discussion after a list is posted and I'm fine with that.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Midaso just aint a big fan of THE WHITE ALBUM is he...lol. Im Gunna guess he doesnt like it as a whole.

Fucking thing is a brilliant work. Sure it's packed with ideas, but only ideas that THE BEATLES could fully realize.

Funny fact. Revolution #9 is my cell phone ring tone...lol..Yep, and people think im nuts.

Well...Maybe they are right

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 PTS. REVOLUTION 9: To certain ears, this is a Musique concrète masterpiece; to others, it's simply an unimpressive (and annoying) collection of unrelated sounds. The real problem though is that even diehard Beatles fans would probably put themselves in the latter group. Which means, the only useful function this song serves is to show how far into the magical land of "f**ked up" the Fab Four went -- not because they really needed to, but simply because they could.

5 PTS. ROCKY RACCOON: Fixin' for a spoken-word hillbilly piece, featuring some saloon piano and an utterly ridiculous lyrical storyline? Look no further than this piece of work - prime evidence of the musical jambalaya that is the Beatles' White Album (and not in the good way).

4 PTS. LADY MADONNA: If it's not the jaunty beat and sax that ruin it for me, it's Paul "I-was-a-saloon-piano-player-in-a-former-life" McCartney's asinine lyrics and awful piano riff that seal the deal. And it was an A-side no less! Good lod!!.

4 PTS. LOVE ME DO: It's cute and fun (which the majority of John's and Paul's early songs are), but it's more annoying than charming. The "ooo" rhymes really grate after a while (not to mention, those whiny "pleeeeeeease"'s) and grammatically, the title is, well.... effin' wrong!

3 PTS. MICHELLE: Pseudo-french fluff. It's warm and cozy (for some reason, I picture two young lovers underneath the Eiffel Tower at dusk), but as a song, it lacks any real substance. In fact, I'm hard-pressed to think of any post-Rubber Soul (and inclusive) song that is as harmless as this one.

3 PTS. WORDS OF LOVE: A dull three-chorder, and enough with that godforsaken 16th-note clapping.

2 PTS. HONEY DON'T: The Beatles forays into country were few, but when they did, the end products sounded more like parodies than homages.

2 PTS. THINGS WE SAID TODAY: The worst song from "A Hard Day's Night". The chord progression is unappealing and the vocal melody - the best that can be put to those chords - makes for an overall lackluster result.

1 PT. OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA: An ob-li-gatory vote in a way; it's one of the silliest things the Beatles ever put to tape. (John - apparently the only one with any sense of taste - hated it). Pop music should be fun, not stupid.

1 PT. ACROSS THE UNIVERSE: Great imagery in the verses, but the music is bland and the "Jai guru deva om" line - whatever it means - is the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Man, I love a lot of those songs Mr. Coolpants but your comments are great!

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Schleuse wrote: "5 PTS: A Taste of Honey"

I love that song.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Keep you in mind, the Beatles are my all-time favourite group, but I will admit, there are songs of theirs that I do not take a lot of pleasure in listening to:

5 points
"Bad Boy" - No wonder they didn't release this on a UK album. Sorry, this song really gets on my nerves.
"Dizzy Miss Lizzy" - I think Help! would have been a perfect album had this song not (in my opinion) ruined it. "Yesterday" really would have been such a perfect ending. I really think the Beatles should have stayed away from Larry Williams covers.

4 points
"I Call Your Name" - Seems like quite a throwaway
"Rock and Roll Music" - I probably wouldn't rank this so high if I didn't feel like this was robbing previous radio time from many overlooked classic songs the Beatles wrote themselves. It's a decent cover, but how this managed to become a #1 hit in so many countries (thankfully, not the U.S. or the U.K., thus disqualifying it from the 'Beatles 1' album) is beyond me.

3 points
"Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey" - I might as well say it now...there aren't many cover songs the Beatles did that I actually enjoy
"When I Get Home" - A forgotten song, what I think is for a good reason.

2 points
"Matchbox" - How did this manage to become a top 40 hit single?!
"Honey Don't"

1 point
"Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby"
"You Can't Do That" - this was a tough call...the first 9 were easy...tenth place was pretty much a tie between 10 other songs.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 points:
Love Me Do
P.S. I Love You
The Beatles first single, it was released three days before I was born, after which both they and myself got better and better over the years. (with exceptions, of course)

4 points:
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Drive My Car

3 points:
Please Please Me
Matchbox

2 points:
Misery
Roll Over Beethoven

1 point:
If I Fell
No Reply

I haven't included various songs that I'm less familiar with. I'll listen to them over the next few days and decide which if any should go on my list.

I predict we'll be having some interesting discussions about some of the songs. Maxwell's Silver Hammer is awful.
I love Revolution 9 and You Know My Name - and among my fave Beatles albums are Love and the Christmas album, so what do I know?

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

This is going to be fun. You may - or may not - have noticed that I stopped contributing to the main Survivor game early on; I just couldn't rouse myself to write negatively about that many artists on a regular basis. This, however, is something altogether different.

5 pts: Maggie Mae
5 pts: Dig It
Not much more to say about these. Gotta clear out the jetsam of these fragments before the real game can start.
4 pts: Revolution 9
4 pts: Devil in Her Heart
3 pts: You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)
3 pts: Bad Boy
2 pts: Mr. Moonlight
2 pts: Anna (Go to Him)
1 pt: Chains
1 pt: The Inner Light

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

I noticed, Harold. Survivor misses you, but I understand how you feel. I think you may like my next contraption better.

Good to see you here!

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

By the way, I certainly wouldn't defend "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)," but I just listened to it for the first time in years, and it reminded me that the Beatles' last year was also Monty Python's first. I can't feel too hostile to a song in which John sings like:

-The Goons
-Richard Cheese
-a parody of himself

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

That's right Kevin - I think the White Album is packed with filler(but of course it has enough great songs to cover up the patches). I was going through all the songs on the White Album and I reckon I'd rate about 13 songs 3 stars,13 songs 4 stars and maybe 4 5 stars...

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

A few songs were picked out that make me shake my head.

One is the cover of Words Of Love if that does not
sound like the future Byrds with that clean jangle sound. One of their earlier songs was based just on that sound.

The second is She Loves You with an early power-pop sound including using chords common in jazz.

Things We Said Today- the song is very mndal and where talking how most rock groups at this time were either very blues influenced or pop music influenced

1. Dig It
2. Taste Of Honey
3. Wild Honey- though its a weird fusion of avant and acoustic blues
4. Maxwell Silver Hammer- progressive music hall nonsense
5. For You Blue

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

I think I'll wait a few weeks before I participate in this, too many songs I hardly know to choose from. I just tried to play a few songs people here 'recommended' and there's way too much bad songs to choose from right now. I'll let the people with the more extensive Beatles knowledge weed out the really bad ones first.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 Revolution 9 - The obvious choice.
5 You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)- Pure filler
4 Matchbox
4 All Together Now
3 Flying
3 Chains
2 Please Mister Postman
2 Til There Was You
1 A Taste Of Honey
1 Anna (Go To Him)

Personally, I hope most of the early covers make an early exit off the island. This little exercise should become very interesting in a few weeks.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 Revolution No. 9
5 You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
4 Inner Light, The
4 Long And Winding Road (Official LP Version)
3 Please Mister Postman (Motown did it better)
3 You Really Got A Hold On Me (ditto)
2 Mr. Moonlight
2 Till There Was You (I kinda like The Music Man)
1 Within You Without You (I like George's pop better)
1 Love You To

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

Just to let you guys know and this will be added to the next cuts intro: 2PM (CST) deadline on both days.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

1. “Maggie Mae”
2. “Dig It”
Well, let’s begin with the two throwaways that Phil Spector introduced in the final version of “Let It Be”. Really we can’t consider it properly Beatles songs, the sense of including them was to point to the improvised and disjointed idiosincracy of the “Get Back” sessions, and, in this sense, they suceeded.
3. “Revolution 9”
One of advantages of the CDs over vynil is that you can skip the song that you don’t like. I think someone invented this specially for “Revolution 9”.
4. “Matchbox”
5. “You Really Got a Hold on Me”
6. “Dizzy Miss Lizzy”
I’m going to vote some rock&roll and soul covers from now on. I mean, they’re good covers and showed the Beatles roots, but their own material was so good that they really didn’t need to include so many.
7. “Your Mother Should Know”
I like a lot the McCartney pastiche songs of music-hall and cabaret, but simply he wasn’t so inspired this time.
8. “When I Get Home”
9. “You Like Me Too Much”
Some routine Lennon and Harrison songs basically conceived to fill the two sides of a given album.
10. “Flying”
The only Beatles instrumental song isn’t very special but anyway gets only one point for the movie scene. “If you look to your left the view is not very inviting. Ah, but if you look to your right...” Probably the quote is inexact, but... have you seen it?.

Re: Beatles Survivor : 1st Cut

5 Points

"Boys" - Bap-Shuab-Bap,Bap-Shuab... 'Nuff said!

"Money" - So, it was their intent to record a clone "Boys" that is as annoying as?

4 Points

"Kansas City/Hey,Hey,Hey,Hey"

"I'm happy just to dance with you"

3 Points

"Dizzy Miss Lizzy"

"Flying"

2 Points

"It's all too much"

"Dig it"

1 Points

"The word"

"Good day sunshine"

I tried not to focus on one album or their early years only, so I took only one song maximum of each album. Obvious choices are the instrumental bits and the cover versions, the rest will be very, very hard to judge...
