Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

I really liked the topic "Top 10 Non-Acclaimed Albums: Our Individual Lists" started by Captain For Dark Mornings, so I thought it would be nice to start one of our favourite songs that were not included on Acclaimed Music...but I figured there would be a lot more songs that we would be able to think of than albums, so why not make it top 25?

So, like the other topic, this list is for our favourite songs, minus the acclaimed ones, even songs bubbling under! Also disqualified is any song released after 2006.

So post your top 25! (or as many as you would like, if you can't come up with 25, but I doubt it will be that hard)

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

Being the iconoclastic music taste innovator that I am with only 17 of my favorite songs in the AM user’s song poll, this might be kind of redundant, but still interesting to me.

1. Frank Zappa – Yo’ Mama
2. Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien
3. Frank Zappa – Inca Roads
4. Smashing Pumpkins – Hummer
5. The Cars – Bye Bye Love
6. The Who – Bargain
7. The Beta Band – It’s Not Too Beautiful
8. Deerhoof – Milk Man
9. Beck – Nicotine + Gravy
10. Flaming Lips – Moth’s Head in the Incubator
11. Sonic Youth – Unmade Bed
12. Postal Service – We Will Become Silhouettes
13. Fela Kuti – Zombie
14. IQU – Puka
15. Wilco – Heavy Metal Drummer
16. Sonic Youth – Theresa’s Soundworld
17. Vitalic – My Friend Dario
18. Arcade Fire – Wake Up
19. Flaming Lips – Bad Days
20. Sufjan Stevens – Cashimir Pulaski Day
21. Beach Boys – Till I Die
22. Fiery Furnaces – Blueberry Boat
23. The Who – A Quick One, While He’s Away
24. Belle and Sebastian – Lazy Lane Painter Jane
25. Talking Heads – The Great Curve

Numbers 18 and 21 ended up being surprise favorites in the user’s poll.

I’m kind of surprised that songs like Bye Bye Love and Bargain aren’t even bubbling under. I thing the overall song list might be a little distorted, since I’m sure there are a ton more end-of-year song lists coming out than lists of all-time songs.

I also don’t think there are a lot of critics looking back and giving some credit to songs that are on great albums but are otherwise the third or fourth most essential tracks from the record. I bet when “best songs of all time” lists are made, critics and editors are also very reluctant to put half or more of an albums individual tracks on their lists, which is too bad.

Has any album come close to having half or more of its songs universally acclaimed?

Some intrepid poster could take on the tedious task of making a list of best song-filled albums. Scheulse’ best years list comes close to that.

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

I have an idea.

I suggest we mention a certain number of songs that we want to subtract from the original top 200 list. Say 10-20?

Then we may replace those songs with the ones that wins the race in this thread?

Any takers? I can compile the list of those songs that has "no-acclaim".

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

2. "Le Gorille" Georges Brassens (1952)

I think that's the only Brassens song I've heard. It's funny, but is it really his best? Is it representative of the rest of his catalogue?

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

It is my favorite Brassens song not only because it's funny but also because it's a protest song against death penalty.

It is not really representative of all his catalogue, because Brassens wrote songs about a lot of subjects (death, love, anti-establishment were his favorites)There are plenty of other great Brassens songs.

Honorio once asked me for a recommendation, but I am such a big fan that I couldn't pick a compilation because none of them were good enough for me (most of the time they were not in chronological order).
But if you don't mind these details, a good 2cd compilation may be a good start.

If you want to go further, the "guitar making series" is great because it consists of the original LPs with good bonuses.

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

For those who don't know it, here's a (decent) translation of "Le Gorille" by British singer Jake Thackray

Through the bars of a large enclosure
The village ladies intently stared,
Where a gorilla with massive composure
Was impassively combing his hair.
They were shamelessly interested,
Eyeing devoutly a certain spot,
But my mother's especially requested
I refrain from telling you what.
Brother Gorilla!

The door of the circus lock-up,
Where the noble brute had been put,
By an administrational cock-up
Was unwisely left unshut
"I'm going to lose it at last," he cried,
Swinging lissomely out of his cage,
Referring, of course, to his chastity:
He was just at the difficult age
Brother Gorilla!

Those self-same ladies who previously
Had been licking their lips from afar
Did a bunk, which shows how devious
And whimsical women are.
In the path of the lovesick monkey
There were two who wouldn't budge:
A little old lady, all shrunken,
And a petty sessions judge.
Brother Gorilla!

The old girl said "It would be surprising
And unlikely in the extreme
If anyone found me appetising,
And beyond my wildest dreams!"
The judge intoned with tranquillity:
"To take me for a female ape
Would be the height of improbability".
Even judges make mistakes.
Brother Gorilla!

It would be curious and uncanny,
Say, if the choice were up to you
To ravish a judge or a granny
And you didn't know which to do.
If I were in such a position
And the choice had got to be mine,
I'd beg the old lady's permission
But go for grandma every time.
Brother Gorilla!

Though the gorilla is very proficient
In the role of a paramour
His mental equipment's deficient
And his eyesight's awfully poor.
With a Palaeolithic leer
He gave the old lady the miss
And, grabbing the judge by the ear,
Gave him an introductory kiss.
Brother Gorilla!

In time the gorilla's desires
Were more or less gratified.
The judge, being rather biased,
Couldn't see the funny side.
He was kicking and screaming and wailing
When his moment of truth had come,
Like those wretches he orders daily
To be taken away and hung.
Brother Gorilla!

Re: Top 25 Non-Acclaimed Songs: Our Individual Lists

Wow, I didn't know it was a protest song. I recently searched for George Brassens somewhere on the web and the only song I found was "Le Gorille". I only played it quietly through my poor laptop speakers and the only thing I heard was Le Goriiiiiille every 30 sec or so. I laughed a bit and thought it was just some non-serious stuff he had thrown into his career.
