Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Have people heard the new R.E.M. single - i think it was streaming on Pitchfork the other day. I quite like it, slightly less polished than the Around The Sun stuff.

Moonbeam: I seem to have an almost pre-natal affection for this song- its booming synths in perfectly ominous octaves seem to map out my DNA, and coupled with Annie’s soulful vocals, it makes for one of my earliest and most influential musical memories. A true masterpiece, the song sums up the immensely creative approaches that Dave and Annie took in creating their music. Annie Lennox's biography reveals this: "For example, the clinking counterpoint audible during the title track, 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)', is not an instrument of electronic or traditional origin- Dave and Annie resourcefully filled up milk bottles with different levels of water and tapped them in time to the chorus for that song." The song seems to have had almost providential origins. According to Annie, the group nearly split the day the song was recorded. After a terrible fight, Dave simply wanted to program the drum computer. Accidentally, it came out in reverse, but Annie suddenly sat up from her fetal position on the floor to pound the main melody on the synthesizer. However, the magic continued. After recording the synth lines, Annie improvised the lyrics in one take, other than the "Hold your head up" lines which were added later.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Such a simple video, but it always makes me smile. Eric Burdon's voice seems like it belongs to someone else, and that guy in the end laughing at.. who knows.. brilliant.

120. Stan Getz with João and Astrud Gilberto- The Girl from Ipanema (1963)
Total points: 193.46
Place in the 2005 poll: 113
Appears on: 7 ballots
Ranked by:
Otisredding (9)
Honorio (4
Henrik (61)
Dumbangel (70)
Giuseppe (10
Mo (133)
John (175)
Comments:
Honorio: Vinícius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim used to go to Ipanema Beach to chat and have some drinks in the terrace of the Veloso Bar. One fine day that graceful garota (girl) passed by and right there they laid down that famous tune. It’s amazing that such a daily affair (who had not fallen immediately in love with some pretty thing walking?) gave birth to a superb song that swings and sways just like the hips of that real girl from Ipanema.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Well, with “Ipanema” we've got the first non-English song in the Top 200, although the parts sung in Portuguese by João Gilberto had been (awfully) edited in these YouTube performance. The first and (maybe) the last. Or we can expect some Gainsbourg?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Good to see CCR
Though they're nor loved so much here (out of Survivor much too soon)
I didn't vote for this song but for Lookin' out my backdoor and Travelin' Band, better musically I guess
But this one is great too
And Honorio I'm afrais we won't have any nonEnglish speaking song now
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
This list is fantastically good! Not at all just the usual suspects. How did this happen? It's like we all chose our picks thinking "I'm gonna give these amazing songs - that are acclaimed, but not acknowledged enough - an extra shot".
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Personnaly, I simply picked my favorites
Like "Stand By Me" for instance
Simple song but what a voice !
Ben E KIng is forgotten now but listen to his voice..
Forgotten, black voices from long ago : Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter, Ben E King..
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Moonbeam, you forgot to include my comment about "Let's Stay Together". Although there were quite silly, I'll copy and paste them:
"Hot. The best song for f…, well, for making love, winning this particular league to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”. The swaying rhythm, the smooth arrangements with silky guitars and “horny” horns, the lascivious backing vocals and, of course, the lustful vocal performance from Al Green are enough arguments to rise the temperature of every couple on every bedroom."
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I know what you mean, Henrik, although we'll have to see how the top 100 looks before we make any conclusions about how unconventional this list is.
I think there is a collective consciousness on the part of this forum as to what the usual top album and songs lists have, and like it or not, that discussion has shaped the way I form my lists now. I can really only think of about 2 songs that I gave high rankings that aren’t going to be too shocking to be really high.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Funny tosee those 2 songs, they are very similar, and there's even a bootleg where you can hear McCartney playing the 2 songs on the guitar joining them in a supersong
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
yeah, for me too, but those open chords Mc Ca uses are very beautiful and funny to play (and not too difficult)
The right hand picking is a little bit more difficult, but not for a country/blues (very amateurish) player like me (I'm kidding)
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Moon beam, you really don't want me to go to bed, it's the fifth of my favourites in a row
But I know it ain't gonna last (like mercury rev says)
I'm sure the next one will be Radiohead or Pixies or even Pavement
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Funny because i very seldom see any clips, so I didn't know Wilco's faces
Good faces
You wanna be their friends
Well, my friends, I stop monopolizing the thread and I go to bed, it's late for my tired old bones
I'll see the rest tomorrow morning
Bye
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Great to see B.O.B. that high (my favourite song on the top 200 so far, but I'm quite sure my #1 will make the list !)
I'm very happy to see Sabotage too, since it seems that Beastie Boys are a little disregarded sometimes in the forum !
P.S : I don't know what it is exactly but something on this thread make some trouble to my CP, when this thread is open, I can no longer watch any youtube video and my CP works very slowly
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I didn't think that so many of my songs would make the list. Of course I'm gratified that they did, but I enjoy listening to the songs that I'm not that familiar with on the list just as much.
Yesterday at work I listened to songs 200-151, today I'm planning on listening to 150-101. Very cool list.
P.S. Nicolas, I know you didn't mean anything by it, but that term is considered very offensive here in the U.S. Unless of course you meant to use it in a way that shines a light on how racist those times were in this country. I'm talking about the "Stand By Me" comment.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Wow, can't believe that The Girl from Ipanema made the list! I personally am not a fan of it, but I'm very proud to see a Brazilian song among the top 200. I know this song had great sucess abroad in the time of its release (and, I think, specially after Frank Sinatra recorded it with Tom Jobim) but would never imagine another one here than me knew this classic of our bossa nova!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Rocky: I realized he didn't realize that when I read it. When I first spoke with Americans over the web they and used that word they were highly offended too, but Europeans don't really see it as an offensive term. We don't even have a word like 'African European' or whatever, in the Netherlands black people are called 'Negers' and that's just the term, not an offensive one.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
That's all for now! I can't wait to unveil the top 100- there are definitely more surprises in store, including several songs that weren't ranked in the last poll!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Rocky,
Yes, that's what I meant by using the bad word about "Afro Americans". The Ben E King clip was so caricatural !
In French, nègre is also a racist term, reminiscent of the old times and very pejorative. It takes us back to those colonial times when you could read in the History magazines that Black people in Africa were inferior beings (well not literraly, of course, but it comes down to that.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
Well I only voted for 1 of those two probable winners, and it is my #200 (might have been in my bubblind unders but I wanted it to beat the other one so I gave a little help).
Anyway there might be a few other strong challengers, love will tear us apart, london calling, common people, Heroes...
By the way I have just realised that While my guitar gently weeps has fallen from 16th on the last poll to 337th in this one ! What a shame !
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
About "Love will tear" : Given their eviction from Survivor, I doubt that
And I didn't vote for that song that I just consider good but no more than that
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
I doubt it will be top 5 but all you really need is a handful of people to value the song highly just like in Survivor you only need a handful of people that don't value them at all.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 2)
