Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
"Groove Is in the Heart" just missed my top 200. It is one of the best singles of the 90s for sure, and I could go on and on about how worthy Lady Miss Kier is of massive success. She has the talent, style, and "it" factor that arguably no female artist has had since the 80s. It's really a shame that they are one-hit wonders, as they have many other solid songs.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
I'm so glad Jungleland made it. I think it's the most quintessential Springsteen song: over-done, over-emoted and over-long, which somehow just works to its advantage.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
After the disappointingly early exit of the Flips in Survivor earlier, a significant blow-softener in the big leap for Race For The Prize. Very nice indeed.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Don't you want me ! I saw this video for the first time 2 days ago while watching MTV something !
The magic of this Human League album is a mystery to me, there are everything I can't stand about 80's in it, but I can not resist to it anyway.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Henrik, Itunes links would work but you'd need Itunes installed. Rhapsody costs nothing to just stream songs but again you need the player installed and register a username. So, maybe that wouldn't be worth the hassle either. Maybe somebody could suggest an online site where you can directly link to samples without having to navigate through websites or open an app. I don't know if that exists. Probably not.
So far I'm 0 for 200. And Your Bird Can Sing was pretty close though. I need to find myself a Thunderclap Newman record. I've always liked that song but never haved listened to anything else.
Honorio: They (and Costello) invented it. Then it was called new wave, now we call it power pop. Melodies came from the sixties pop but the energy came from the punk. And the fury. Paul Weller attacked against the mass media and the nuclear and military policy of Thatcher government. “You choose your leaders and place your trust / as their lies wash you down and their promises rust / you’ll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns”.
Moonbeam: The last song Joy Division recorded, and the first New Order would release. It is this duplicity of end and beginning that renders this songs emotions so complex. I listened to this song on repeat for the entire plane ride home after my Dad died, and it never fails to strike a nerve.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
179. Joy Division- Disorder (1979)
Total points: 153.15
Place in the 2005 poll: 178
Appears on: 4 ballots
Ranked by:
Rendle (7)
Mitchell Stirling (26)
Michel (85)
Moonbeam (196)
Comments:
Moonbeam: Never did Joy Division sound so urgent- “Disorder” captures the quintessential JD sound better than any other song. “I’ve got the spirit, but lose the feeling”. Ugly and beautiful.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
I love this list although I only have 2 songs so far from my own list. The many points for songs that are really high in someone's list make this all the more interesting!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
178. The Band- The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (1969)
Total points: 155.69
Place in the 2005 poll: 274
Appears on: 4 ballots
Ranked by:
Schwah (
Honorio (29)
Rocky Raccoon (7
Slush (10
Comments:
Honorio: While its contemporaries were facing the Vietnam War, Robbie Robertson and The Band got us back to the American Civil War. And they did it with sympathy for the loser’s side, telling the story of a Confederate soldier who comes back from the front after burying his brother only to find his world and his life shattered. “They should never have taken the very best”. So they weren’t really talking about Vietnam after all?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
No way, Henrik! I borrowed many ideas from the two of you, and I really enjoyed both your poll and Anthony's! I'm lucky I had a template to follow and I'm lucky that the list is so diverse and fun!
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
I really like this cover of Hurt, gives me chills every time I see the video. A song about insanity becoming a song about life and death, it's the sincerity of this version that is fantastic.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
I'm coming back to these links. Do youtube links often get deleted or even replaced by other clips? Is it because of permission problems or what's the usual reason?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
This list is really fantastic so far.
Moonbeam, interesting take on the Bjork triumvirate, though I always include "New World" from Selmasongs along with "Isobel" and "Bachelorette" in my version of it. They all have that huge orchestral quality, which is when she shines the most I reckon.
And hopefully that wasn't it for Curtis, but I fear it likely was.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
In essence they are all disobeying copyright law. But in reality, music videos on Youtube is a small fish in a huge sea and the industry has kind of embraced it. You don't see them pulled much like TV shows get pulled and they use it as a tool as well.
Moonbeam: Prince has done a lot of social commentary songs, with varied levels of success. This minimal message captures the fears of the 1980s and delivers it with a delectable slice of funk.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Good to see some Prince love, although "Sign o' the Times" didn't make my list. I wonder if I voted for more Prince songs(9)than anyone else? Just kidding of course.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Anthony: I doubt nicolas thought that message through, and I seriously doubt he meant any offense to you. That the results in the songs poll have more variety is neither your fault nor a surprise.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Well crackpot is relative. I had a few proverbial "guilty pleasures" (not many at all, but a few, mostly in my bubbling under list). But even those I have a degree of intrigue about what they are trying to acheive and how they are trying to acheive it. And an intriguing song is one that could be loved.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
400 . Walker Brothers - The Electrician
399 . Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun
398 . Marlena Shaw - California Soul
397 . Nick Drake - Pink Moon
396 . PJ Harvey - Down by the Water
What an amazing little run! Who else voted for California Soul, I wonder?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Outstanding work, Moonbeam. You and Anthony have permanently raised the bar for those of us who do survey-type thingies on this forum. Neoptolemos and I have some catching up to do...
Now I have to figure out a way to top this in my next project (it's cooler than bracketology and Survivor put together...and that's all the info you're getting on it until this summer).
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Thanks schleuse, but I don't deserve any credit - I shamelessly ripped off Henrik's ideas. The only thing I did was a few minor typeface changes.
And let me be the first to say, I'm stoked about your latest idea! I have absolutely no clue what it is mind you, but it's exciting to know you've got something in the works.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
JUst when I posted that comment I said -oops, anthony's ego is not gonna like it-.
Anthony my man I meant no harm.
Neo summed it up : I commented on the result, on the content, not on the presentation !
You did a great job, and God knows I had waited for this albums list to unravel and was delighted when it did.
I didn't want to hurt you and I never criticized the great job you've done.
What I meant is that the songs results hold more genre variety, which is something I appreciate
OK ?
If you still want to come to Farnce to strangle me, I'm waiting for you with a few bottles of red wine
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Oh nicolas, my friend - I was just playing around. I knew what you meant by your comments, and my schoolyard insults "weiner" and "stupid dummy-head" weren't meant as anything but a joke. Sorry about that man.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
ok Anthony
Me Français
Me don't understand all language levels
me don't get when you talk kiddy
A weiner's a kind of sausage, no ?
Sometimes I wish I could post in my mother language
You don't know how frustrating it is to express yourself with a limited number of tools, especially for a writing lover like me
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Rocky, I understand what you mean when you say that punk starts right here, but to me it is a non sense.
Punk started to exist when the word was invented, at the mid-end of the '70s.
it is the same with rockn'roll
Nowadays, as soon as something is rebellious, agressive and deviant, it is labelled as "punk".
I even read an article in the very serious newspaper "Le monde" stating that Johnny Cash was punk !
of course the Who influenced the Jam and a bunch of other hard rock, punk and pop bands.
And there are similarities with punk bands in "my generation" (the Sex Pistols too)
But now "punk" is the magic word. Say "punk" and you're cool, say "punk" and you're modern.
But it is true, My Generation is a fucking good all-in-your-face song.
The rest is just words
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Yeah, Ashlee Simpson used to see herself as a punk... but I understand the point Rocky was trying to make- while it may not be "punk", "My Generation" does seem to share a bit of the punk ethos, so to speak.
Honorio: Dance, music, sex, romance. Dancing under the cherry moon. Swaying with an irresistible funk rhythm. Embracing under blankets of synthesizers and wah-wahs. Whispering sensual verses with a provocative falsetto. Nobody as Prince to turn seduction, desire and sex into music. “I just need your body, baby, from dusk till dawn”. It can be said louder but not clearer.
No Youtube video!
I kinda figured this would happen- Prince has gotten his legal cronies to take down lots of videos with his music. I'm actually surprised that I found one for "Sign o' the Times". In any case, you can still listen to the song by clicking on the image below.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Wow, the biggest surprise for me there so far. And what a surprise it is! Really pleased to see it get so many of your votes.
Btw, it doesn't seem a little strange that Prince was willing to give his album away wih the Sunday papers here in the UK, but takes down videos of his older (better) songs from YouTube?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
164. Bob Marley and the Wailers- No Woman No Cry (1974)
Total points: 162.54
Place in the 2005 poll: 268
Appears on: 6 ballots
Ranked by:
Rocky Raccoon (15)
Ozphoenix (3
Neoptolemos (86)
Rendle (86)
Andre (103)
Eduard (19
Comments:
Rocky Raccoon: Romance blooms even in the dire situation of Jamaica's shanty towns. Love is universal, and Marley found the melody and had the voice to express that.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Prince is a twisted fuck. One thing being a fan- it's never boring! On one of his fansites, it has become a bit of a saying that "Prince absolutely hates his fans, and they love him for it!"
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
The Stooges ?
I think "Raw Power" (maybe more than Fun house" who still wears traces of psychedelia) can be considered as a pre-punk album, just as "Rocket 88" was a pre-rock'n roll single.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
and I had forgotten to include Sign O The Times !
It was still in my waiting list
holy f&"@ck, I love that song
i'm happy because with the '80s polls coming, I'll have to listen to all his great '80s albums (I just discovered "Dirty Mind" and it's excellent !)
I've put it at # 178 of my updated top 200.
The competition is hard, cause i've got a lot of old time material in my list + some French music.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Cool, we're up and running again. It's 2:40 a.m. here, so not sure how long I'll be able to hang, but I'll be here awhile. What's your favorite song on 'Dirty Mind' Nicolas?
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Good to hear some discussion of Dirty Mind! It's raw, rocking and fun. At barely 30 minutes, it's such a short burst of energy and really got the ball rolling for Prince's artistic development.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Earlier evidence of Prince's pop/rock fusion is contained in his first two albums as well. While mostly folk and disco, For You ends with the rocker "I'm Yours", while Prince boasts the brilliant "Bambi" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad".
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
WOW! This is great. The list looks really good so far. And the presentation is superb. Nice work, Moonbeam! I'm having a great time looking though the videos.
Like John I need to get my hands on a Thunderclap Newman album. What a fantastic song "Something In The Air" is. And thanks to those who voteed for "Disorder". You made me pull out Unknown Pleasures for the first time in years.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
A lot of mine started showing up in the 400-300 range, but less from 300-current. I think I voted for a lot of the stragglers that only a few other people would think of, and some of the less popular songs by the greats.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Well, boys, what a list so far!! I know that it sounds silly but I’m really PROUD of participating in all the awesome polls of AM Forum. Yes, and I mean ALL, Henrik, Jacek, Sonofsamiam, Schleuse and Anthony. And of course including the upcoming polls, Neoptolemos and Lonesomepanda.
I’m really glad to see “Spanish Bombs”, “Going Underground”, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” or “Kiss” on the list, although for me are obviously Top 50 material.
And, Nicolas, now I regret voting for “paumés” instead “Amsterdam” (I was doubting until the last moment). Being my #52 it could have reached the Top 200.
Now I’m working to introduce my list on Rate Your Music. When Moonbeam post the individual list I will make “public” my list and I’ll post the link.
P.S. Anthony: I voted for "Games Without Frontiers".
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
honorio, it's a pity for Brel, but never mind, "les paumés" is a beautiful song too
my favorite line : "l'amour leur déchire le foie"
"Love breaks their livers" (it's a song about rich youing alcoholics)
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Well, that explains it Neoptolemos – "Solsbury" was #11 on mine.
Believe it or not, I’ve been known to perform a great, stripped-down acoustic cover of "Bette Davis Eyes" (well, I’ve received some positive feedback anyway.) Instead of the rising notes on “Harlowe gold” and “home” etc, I sing them using the same tone as the line (as you can tell, Carnes sings each line monotone, and then inflects on the ending word.) I leave out the inflection and do other melodic variations within the song as well. With my version, I think it adds a bit of sorrow to it.
Re: 2008 Acclaimed Music Songs Poll: The Results (Part 1)
Sorry, Moonbeam, but the link for The Smiths song is not for "Bigmouth..." but for "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side". Another great one, by the way.
