I thought I'd reverse the "Songs that are too good for their albums thread" and ask about albums that you think are significantly better that any individual track.
This exercise obviously puts any 'concept albums' on any list immediately, so I would try to eliminate any overt concept album from the list.
I tried to look at my albums and songs list and see which of my albums contain no songs in my top 100. Try it yourself if you'd like.
Here's some of mine:
Velvet Underground - Loaded
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Vs. the Pink Robots
Basement Jaxx - Remedy
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - s/t
Zombies - Oddessey and Oracle
Pixies - Doolittle
Astral Weeks and OK Computer; ditto Doolittle, I'm not sure I agree with Odessey and Oracle, in my top 5 albums, but great songs also. Come to think of it, all four of these albums are in my top five albums! I guess that's why!
Are you sure Exile is as good as the hype, considering the absence of a top 300 song in your rankigs? I've always found it to be a little overrated compared to some of the other Stones classics.
I've asked myself that same question many times, is it really that good? And I can only conclude that yes, it is indeed that good. Every song just works, and although not a single one is in the top 300, there's not a single song on there that isn't just good (or even great) either. And they all work together so well and form such a great album, one that really deserves the term "greater than the sum of its parts", that I just can't put any Stones album higher in my list than this one.
