earliest albums

The oldest album I see on this site is Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads from way back in 1940. What format was this, and other early albums, released on?
Is anything older included on Acclaimed Music?

Re: earliest albums

Woody Guthrie recorded the songs for Dust Bowl Ballads in 1940, and they were released on two three-disc albums of 78s by RCA Victor Records.
this was the only way to put long playing materials on records at the time, so that's why nothing older is included in the AM album lists
But if you go to the song lists, you'll find older recordings

Re: earliest albums

The industry didn't really become album based until the Beatles.

Re: earliest albums

That's a very "rock-only" view.
Jazz for instance -and blues in the'50s and '60s to a lesser extent- was used to the LP since the 50's.
Folk music -you've got the example with Guthrie- was very fond of LP's.
In France, a lot of great singers from the '50s and early '60s released albums quite early (Brel, Brassens, Vian, Piaf).
