Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

That's a brilliant list. There were a couple of songs that popped into my mind when thinking of great long songs and at least 75% is on the list. Excellent.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I agree- this list is a good one. JT can kiss my ass, though.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

He can kiss mine too, but that song is awesome.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Oh c'mon, you both picked up the FutureSex/LoveShow DVD (exclusive at BestBuy!) You know you did.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

LMAO- hell to the naw! Timberlake makes me want to throw things at the TV whenever he defiles the screen.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I downloaded 3 songs from that album, deleted 2 and put "What Goes Around.../...Comes Around Interlude" in my top 100. Really, it's that good.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

At the risk of turning this into a JT thread, I can't resist this: Moonbeam, I'm sure you've probably heard this already, but last year Prince was performing at a post-Emmys party in front of a crowd that included JT and his then-girlfriend Cameron Diaz and his stage banter included a remark to this effect: "Some people are claiming that they're bringing sexy back ... sexy never left!"

Ah, I like the guy just fine, though. And this RS list is exceptional, for a change. As you can probably guess, they had me at "Oh, Comely".

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Yeah, after I saw JT's show this past August, I had a different opinion of him. (Just for the record, I didn't choose to go to the concert - my girlfriend dragged me there, kicking and screaming I might add.)

Anyways, good list. And Harold, that was the first song that I noticed too.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

This should count on the Acclaimed music lists?

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

"And this RS list is exceptional, for a change."

They didn't have enough material to screw it up.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

"At the risk of turning this into a JT thread, I can't resist this: Moonbeam, I'm sure you've probably heard this already, but last year Prince was performing at a post-Emmys party in front of a crowd that included JT and his then-girlfriend Cameron Diaz and his stage banter included a remark to this effect: "Some people are claiming that they're bringing sexy back ... sexy never left!""

And JT rebutted in "Give It To Me", which is another failure but that's another story:

Could you speak up and stop mu-mumbling, I don't think you came in clear
When you're sittin' on the top, it's hard to hear you from way up here
I saw you tryin' to act cute on TV, "Just let me clear the air..."
We missed you on the charts last week, damn, that's right you wasn't there
If se-sexy never left, then why's everybody on my shi-it-it
Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it
So if you see us in the club, go on and walk the other way
Cause our run will never be over, not at least until we say

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Wow, I almost came off as a fan there. Let me just add that Prince is by far the better artist and WCAGA is pretty much the only JT song I like.

Lets get back to the list.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

What about My Love? I'm a big fan of pop music but My Love is the only JT song I can stand.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

That really is surprisingly good for a Rolling Stone list, with Timberlake being the most obvious of a few exceptions. Songs I would have liked to see included are Mercury Rev's 'Frittering',Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' and, most of all, Slint's 'Good Morning Captain'. Also, 'Mother Sky' is a greater Can epic than 'Bel Air' to my mind.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

An interesting list, although I would have chosen different songs by Dylan ("Desolation Row") and Springsteen ("Incident on 57th Street").

I actually got to liking "What Goes Around..." on a trip to Europe last spring, when the song seemed to be on the radio every 20 minutes. I think the real turkey on this ranch is "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." I don't actually hate Billy Joel, but my god, is that awful.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I'd choose some other songs by artists mentioned in the list as well.

Can's "Yoo Doo Right" deserves the nod, as does The Doors' "Riders on the Storm". I'd give Prince's choice to "Crystal Ball" as well.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Out of all the seven minute songs which song went number one in America? A certain band from Liverpool it just figures. I still respect them though.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

do like me, never watch tv or listen to the radio
You won't even know who's JT

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Are you sure that it is a Rolling Stone magazine list?
Schleuse, I like your choice for Springsteen. But agree this time with RS. "Jungleland" would be my election too. Awesome song!

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

For me, it is New York City Serenade
In the last scene of my novel, the character goes to bed and listens to this song and it eases his pain, just for the night
Jungleland is great too

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

what about Deacon Blues by Steely Dan !!!!? Unbelievable, but then again oh of course I forgot its a poll by the Rolling Stone so its gotta be Rooock n Roll with guitars hasn't it, never mind musical songwriting genius ! Unbelievable

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

This list seems more like "First 50 songs over 7 mins Rolling Stone can think of".

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Yes, yes, good song a little overrated, yes, yes...

Justin Timberlake?

*stops reading*

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Have you even heard the song?

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

No Alice's Restaurant? Justin is a glorified female version of Will Smith. How he's getting all this acclaim and even street cred with the likes of 50 Cent is beyond me. Richard Roeper even praised him as a cereal killer. Man I miss Ebert. He keeps trying build a more urban audience by playing thugs in his videos and in movies and it just makes him look like a total pussy. He would have gotten his ass handed to him during the height of gangsta rap. He tries to hard. Compared to Justin I actually miss Vanilla Ice.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Huh????
Is Blur-Tender really over 7 minutes? I'm shocked
it has been a good few years since I've heard it but I really didn't remember it being that long...

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I just realized "You Can't Always Get What You Want" is over 7 minutes too, much better than "Can't You Hear Me Knocking".

And yes, Tender is 7:41.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

My guess is that they limited one song per artist, thus missing out on some great songs...the ones that stand out to me the most are "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin (as well as "Kashmir"), "Light My Fire" by the Doors, "No Woman No Cry" by Bob Marley, "Good Times" by Chic, Don McLean's "American Pie," and the songs they ignored in favour of Pink Floyd's "Sheep" ("Time," "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," etc.)

here are the songs I think are deserving of a spot (listed alphabetically by artist)...

Planet Rock - Afrika Bambaataa
Jessica - Allman Brothers Band
I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
Foreplay/Long Time - Boston
Stay (Just a Little Bit Longer) - Jackson Browne
River of Tears - Eric Clapton
Good Times - Chic
So What - Miles Davis
L.A. Woman - The Doors
Light My Fire - The Doors
Riders on the Storm - The Doors
Desolation Row - Bob Dylan
Hurricane - Bob Dylan
Stuck Inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again - Bob Dylan
Visions of Johanna - Bob Dylan
The Last Resort - The Eagles
Do You Feel Like I Do? - Peter Frampton
I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home) - Grand Funk Railroad
November Rain - Guns N Roses
Captain Jack - Billy Joel
Goodnight Saigon - Billy Joel
Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
No Quarter - Led Zeppelin
The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Canadian Railroad Trilogy - Gordon Lightfoot
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band
No Woman No Cry - Bob Marley
American Pie - Don McLean
Careful with That Axe, Eugene - Pink Floyd
Dogs - Pink Floyd
Echoes - Pink Floyd
Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
Pigs (Three Different Ones) - Pink Floyd
Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
Time - Pink Floyd
Us and Them - Pink Floyd
Welcome to the Machine - Pink Floyd
The Prophet Song - Queen
You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - The Temptations
Born Slippy (NUXX) - Underworld
Life's Been Good - Joe Walsh
Living for the City - Stevie Wonder
Roundabout - Yes
Cowgirl in the Sand - Neil Young
Like a Hurricane - Neil Young

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Excellent list, Daniel !

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Just a question here: Can someone please tell me on THEIR copy of Blur(s/t) what is the length of Essex Dogs(for me 8:08) - supposed to be longer. Actually, all those Black Sabbath albums, they've changed the order of the tracks, and cut off one or two of the tracks - cheap copies of them, bloody annoying...

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I'm listening to Lou Reed's "The kids" on Berlin
7'53''
Excellent song, although it's one of the most pessimistic I've never heard
The ending with the children crying is a torture
I prefer not to thinkl of what they had to do to the kids for the recordings

-The Beatles : Final of Abbey road (from Golden Slumbers to The End)
Hendrix : 1983 and the following track

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

Great lists, David and Nicolas (I like particularly the two Stevie Wonder tunes).
And here is mine. Going back to my all-time songs list (that soon I will modify for the Moonbeam poll):
31. WILLIE COLON & RUBEN BLADES “Pedro Navaja” (7’21”)
43. DEREK & THE DOMINOS “Layla” (7’03”)
85. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH “St. Matthew Passion No. 1” (9’05”)
103. AZTEC CAMERA “Walk Out to Winter (Extended)” (7’42”)
132. KING CRIMSON “Starless” (12’18”)
154. THE DOORS “Riders on the Storm” (7’09”)
174. JOHN COLTRANE “My Favorite Things” (13’43”)
217. FRANK ZAPPA “The Torture Never Stops” (9’45”)
225. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN “Eroica: Marcia funebre” (17’10”)
233. THE THE “Uncertain Smile (Extended)” (9’54”)
244. NEIL YOUNG “Like a Hurricane” (8’16”)
248. MILES DAVIS “Sanctuary” (10’53”)

Yes, I know, I’m cheating… If I remove the classical works, the jazz tunes and the extended 12” versions the only pop songs of > 7’ are the ones from Blades, Clapton, Fripp, Morrison, Zappa and Young. Please check out (if you don’t know it by now) the awesome Blades and Crimson ones.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

oh yes I forgot about "My Favorite Things"
and a song which is on the Rs list : "One" by Metallica

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I would add like 15 Van Morrison songs, but they probably excluded him because he would completely outshine the others.

Re: Rolling Stone Magazine 50 greatest songs over seven minutes

I would add :
The Mars Volta - Cicatriz Esp
I'm not much a fan of that band, but that song reminds me of the best tracks of Relationship of Command, which is one of my favourite album of the '00s

And my favourite more than 7 minutes song would be DJ Shadow - Blood on the Motorway
And it is fun to me to see that my favourite more than 7 minutes song is made by the same artist as my favourite less than 2 minutes song !
