1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

could you remind us Henrik how to read the correlation coefficient ?

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Pearson's correlation reflects the degree of linear relationship between two variables (in this case two ballots). It ranges from +1 to -1. A correlation of +1 means that there is a perfect positive linear relationship between variables. A correlation of -1 means that there is a perfect negative linear relationship between variables. A correlation of 0 means there is no linear relationship between the two variables.

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

ok

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Have some of you guys really got all 100? Man,what a time and money investment that would be...

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I don't even physically have 10%, but I did listen to pretty much every album (10 a month, I started keeping track after the 1994 poll, not that much work) and definitely every song.

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

good idea otisredding !

I'm going to do it for France
Besides Dumbangel, LonseomePanda and me, are there any other French guys
I suppose Michel is French, but he might not be (Belgian, Canadian, Swiss, etc..)

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Michel's email address is xxxx.xxxx.fr
I look forward to seeing the votes from the French jury. The Spanish one looks great!

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I'm not sure if what I did is a great statistical feat, but I basically just deleted everyone but the Dutch users and it gave me a ranking. I was trying to figure out what the 2100 did in the formula but this works.. I suppose.

1) Pulp - Common People
2) R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
3) U2 - One
4) The La's - There She Goes
5) Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (XO)
6) Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
7) R.E.M. - Man on the Moon
8) Oasis - Wonderwall
9) Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
10) The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

1) R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
2) Radiohead - OK Computer
3) U2 - Achtung, Baby
4) R.E.M. - Out of Time
5) The La's - The La's
6) The Verve - Urban Hymns
7) Björk - Debut
8) Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
9) Massive Attack - Blue Lines
10) Radiohead - The Bends

I daresay, we have a great taste.

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I'm so embarrassed that I only put in 40 albums from the 90s. I should have at least put in 50 out of 100. There's nothing but 21's by my name :-(

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I'm going to deal with the French lists as soon as I can (I am busy at the moment)
I'm also waiting for answers from the voters who didn't tell about their location

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Considering there are 4 French voter (dumbangel, Nicolas, Michel and me) here are the results :

Songs :
1 - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
2 - Beck - Loser
3 - R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
3 (ex aequo) - Elliott Smith Waltz #2 (XO)
5 - U2 - One
6 - Oasis - Wonderwall
7 - Pulp - Common People
7 (ex aequo) - Radiohead - Paranoid Android
9 - Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
10 - Radiohead - Karma Police

Not much comments to do, we don't agree on many thinks, except on Smells like teen spirit (on everybody top 15) and on Motorcycle Emptiness (in everybody last 15)
Maybe you can not that the last Radiohead song, which is Let Down, would be 24th and that none of us has voted any Radiohead Song further than 59th (while E Bow the Letter would be 77th and Man on the Moon gets a 83)

Albums :
1 - Radiohead - OK Computer
2 - Jeff Buckley - Grace
3 - Portishead - Dummy
4 - Pavement - Wowee Zowee
5 - Nirvana - Nevermind
6 - Beck - Odelay
7 - Björk - Homogenic
8 - Elliott Smith - Either/Or
9 - R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
10 - Elliott Smith - XO

(that makes 3 of my top 5 in the top 10, with my n°5 coming 11th)
You can notice that Wowee Zowee reaches place 4 with only 2 voters upon 4 (the 9 other album getting votes from everybody)
Michel your n°1 in the only one not in the top 10, Tindersticks reaching the place 14.

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Merci Nassim !

I was wondering if I had time to do this...
I'm quite busy even if I took 2 weeks off : my wife's in bed with my newborn baby and I've gotta do the housekeeping for my family and take care of my daughter
Interesting result : the perfect consensus
I didn't put Wowee zowee in my list. I have the cd but hadn't the time to listen to it. But I have a good impression on it.

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

Number 1 and 2 are mine, but in reverse (I put Grace first and Radiohead 2nd)
Homogenic is a favorite of Michel's and mine.
2 Elliott Smith albums : He is popular in France (but not so much on my record player)

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I don't know if Elliott Smith is popular in France, but as he is my favourite artist I have put his albums 1 and 4.
And I've seen that you have nominated him... I'll keep an eye on you mouahahaha

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I love this result (we're only 4 so, of course, it's closer to mine ).

Didn't really expect Tindersticks in the top 10.
Actually, this album is not really my top 1;
my real top 1 of the 90's is their 2nd album unfortunately only 11th in 1995 poll .

And glad to see Wowee Zowee so high !

Re: 1990s poll - everybody's votes and the correlations

I'm very happy for Elliott Smith
But I wouldn't say "Elliott Smith is popular in France"...
Maybe he'spopular for the 4 french AMers we are but if non-french AMers knew what the french charts looks like, they'd probably all laugh at us

I'm also very happy for "wowee zowee". I guess my vote help it
Curiously, I'm not a Pavement fan at all. But I must admit that "wowee zowee" is a masterpiece. For me it's THE best Alternative/Indie US album of the 90s. I love the way the songs are built, destructed, and rebuilt.
I also think it's the more melodic and more accessible record Pavement ever did.
