Disappointments of 2007

What album really was a letdown for you? Looking through the 2007 list I totally forgot about how bad Proof of Youth was by The Go! Team. That was a big disappointment considering how much I loved their first one.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

A Weekend In The City by Bloc Party. I thought Silent Alarm was a standout album a coupla years back, something genuinely different and exciting. But AWITC was just limp, very little to latch onto. Good lyrics, if relentlessly cynical, but not really enough on their own.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

I agree John, "proof of youth" by The Go! Team is the biggest disappointment of 2007. I had loved the first album so much.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Our Love to Admire by Interpol- I really enjoyed their first two albums, but can't get into their third at all.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

There are way less disappointments this year than last year. Practically the only two albums I really liked last year by bands that had already made albums I really liked were Modern Times and Ys.

Interpol's one, Fountains of Wayne is one, Rilo Kiley is a HUGE one.

"How was he supposed to know...she was only fifteeeen!"
*bleach*

Armchair Apocrypha is good but strongly inferior to Mysterious Production of Eggs. Challengers, ditto.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

I totally agree with that. I haven't even listened to it all the way through because I get so bored with it. It even has one of the most boring album covers ever.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

I second the sentiment about Proof of Youth. Only listened to it once, and I usually need to play it a second time to make definitive conclusions, but the album just repeated the same sound over and over. Thunder Lightning Strike really exploded with potential. I bet their live show is still good though.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Now way was this year better than 06. Belle and Sebastian had one of their best releases and their friends Camera Obscura released another masterpiece, the Gossip had an underrated gem as did the Guillemots and the Long Blondes. Women dominated last year and so did new bands. People wanted to see familiar bands with male lead singer so that's why everyone claims 06 was such a terrible year. YS sucked balls though. It only got all that acclaim because it came out late in the year and it was fresh on everyone's minds, plus it was produced by Steve Albini. Cat Power and Neko Case had far better albums than that pretentious joke of an album. Tori Amos may not have been as artsy fartsy as Newsom but she's still the much better Kate Bush knockoff.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

My biggest disappointment has been Cross by Justice. After 2 awesome songs (D.A.N.C.E and Jesus of Nazareth) and a great mix of Simian's song, I was waiting for the next big electronic album, a strong challenger to OK Cowboy for the title of my favourite electronic album ever.
But if the album begins with 1 good track and 2 really great tracks, everything that follows really suck, sounding at some moment like the soundtrack of a cheap porn movie( Valentine), at others like an annoying summer hit of an average DJ (DVNO) and the few songs with good ideas sounds unfinished (the party).
Even the version of Jesus of Nazareth is weeker than the old one !

Many of the new albums by bands I like have disappointed me.
Sometimes just a little, like Era Vulgaris or Neon Bible which are not bad but far less impressive than former albums (even if "I wanna make it wit' chu" and "no cars go" are two of the best songs of the year)
Sometimes it has been a real deception, as for arctic monkeys or Kanye West
And sometimes it totally sucked, especially Bloc Party as said before, but also Foo Fighters which I keep on listening to every new album but start wondering why ! And let's not forget the Rakes !

I had also been at first disappointed by "Places like this" but well, it's still full of fun even if it is far less exciting than "In case we die"

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Bloc Party has ALWAYS been disappointing to me period. Their debut was so bland and predictable.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Panda, is the Justice album really that bad? It was on my list of albums to pick up, and like you, I was thinking the next OK Cowboy. But the song that got me excited about the record was an mp3 of DVNO that I found. If I like that song, will I like the rest of the record?

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Well I must recognize that some songs are totally different to what you might except to here, like DVNO, Valentine, Stress or Party which are all totally different from one another but which I don't like at all (except as I said Party which has some good ideas)
Part of the other songs sounds too much like copies of Daft Punk, the transitions between songs sounds like cut parts of Discovery.
And Phantom and New Jack sounds like failed attempts to do a "Waters of Nazareth 2".
There only remains Waters and D.A.N.C.E which are great songs and Let there be light which rhythm is really amazing.

Re: Disappointments of 2007

Ys is a great album. Probably my second or third favorite of 2006. It's just got all the markers for hype backlash. Eight minute songs, eclectic voice, big words.

You know, the sort of things that if you like will sound amazing, but if you don't will make you say "Wow, that's so pretentious!" and accuse everybody who likes it of just trying to sound cool.
