My favorite Spanish song of 1999: Andrés Calamaro's "No son horas"

Confessional albums are a thorny affair. Quoting Eduardo Guillot for Rockdelux: “Giving yourself in the desperate and spontaneous way that he gives himself in this record is similar to selling your body or killing someone: it could seem easy but not everyone can do it”. The Spanish-Argentinean singer-songwriter Andrés Calamaro travelled a long way till the release of his masterpiece “Honestidad brutal” (“Brutal Honesty”) in 1999, 37 songs recorded when the singer was 37-years old.
Calamaro began his career twenty years before, achieving his first success in 1981 as part of the pioneer Argentinean rock band Los Abuelos de la Nada. After three albums with the band and four solo albums, he left Argentina in the middle of the inflationist hell of the early 90s to start from scratch in Spain. He formed a band, Los Rodríguez, with ex-members of Tequila (a successful Spanish-Argentinean band), publishing 5 albums during the 90s to notable critical and public acclaim. After the disbanding of Los Rodríguez, Calamaro started again his solo career with the succesful “Alta suciedad” (“High Dirtiness”, 1997), but nobody was prepared for his 1999 double album. An album recorded between Madrid, Buenos Aires and New York during almost a long year and deeply marked by a painful breaking of a relationship. It’s an album full of excesses (just like The Magnetic Fields “69 Love Songs”, my other favourite album of that year). Of chemical and sentimental excess (numerous references to drugs and lost love filled the album), of musical and creativity excess (this time the 140 minutes length is justified, with almost no weak songs and nice stylish variety) and, of course, of honesty excess.
I’ve selected “No son horas” (“It’s No Time”), a song of disturbing beauty, with a ¾ rhythm rooted in South-American folk and a melody with some debts to traditional Argentinean song “Alfonsina y el mar” (later covered by Calamaro). Conveniently placed in the latter third of the album, it’s a song about the hope of recovery after the fall: “Don’t you feel sorry for me more than a second / cause I’m going to get up”.
Some quotes now. Juan Cervera for Rockdelux: “It’s an album with and about friends, cities, football, women, cocaine and love. A love that spreads on every note of the album.” Iván Adaime for AMG: “The album contains 37 songs selected from more of a thousand recorded during this period – a result of the split-up with his Spanish girlfriend, sleepless nights and plane travels. Most of the songs are about regret and lost-love panic”. And Andrés Calamaro itself: “To me it’s violent, even cruel, to listen an album like that one. So I don’t listen to it at all. There are some songs on it that I don’t even want to think about. I was probably crazy when I decided to release that album. I could have spared this to me. Next time I don’t want to be the main protagonist of my record”. Sadly. The next works of Calamaro didn’t come even close to this masterpiece, one of the best five Spanish albums ever in my opinion.

NO SON HORAS
Composer and performer: ANDRÉS CALAMARO
First release: 1999 (“Honestidad brutal” double album)
Length: 4’13”

IT’S NO TIME

If they told you I fell down,
and it’s true, and it’s true,
don’t feel sorry for me more than a second
cause I’m going to get up.
And if you need an image please remember me like this,
with the wind in the sails.

If they told you I sleep at daytime,
it’s true, and it’s true,
don’t forget that I’m big cause there’s crowds
waiting for me outside.
And if you missed some tenderness, or life made you tough,
I want your forgiveness.

I’m not down to earth, I lost reality,
I forgot the friends, forgot the others,
I admit we’ve been out of tune sometimes
but never stopped loving you.
I’m still a tender male who wants to stand up
but I’ll wait for you.

It’s no time for laughing, no time for forgetting,
you did what you wanted, really,
don’t feel sorry for me more than a second
cause I’m going to get up.
And if you need an image please remember me like this,
with the wind in the sails.
And if you need an image please remember me like this,
with the wind in the sails.

They told you I sleep at daytime,

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

forgot to say : most hated album of the year : Moby - Play

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

I've found ordering this list harder than most other years. Also, there are some 1999 albums I for whatever reason have never gotten around to that might rank highly if I had. For example, I've still not heard either of Brad Mehldau's 1999 albums, but given that he's recorded some of my favorite music, there's a good chance that they would bump a few of the following down a notch or two. Oh well, since only Nicolas has included Brad Mehldau in his list, my mentioning him or not wouldn't put him anywhere near the top 10, anyway.

1) Shelby Lynne - I Am Shelby Lynne (I think of this as a 2000 album, but I guess it was originally released in Great Britain in 1999, so here it is)
2) Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
3) Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
4) Pavement - Terror Twilight
5) Randy Newman - Bad Love
6) Diana Krall - When I Look in Your Eyes
7) Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
8) Moby - Play (almost exclusively for the country blues and gospel samples)
9) Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun (though this might be much lower if I understood Icelandic)
10) Wilco - Summerteeth
11) Tom Waits - Mule Variations
12) Sleater-Kinney - The Hot Rock
13) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
14) Dixie Chicks - Fly
15) White Stripes - White Stripes

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

Why?

I hear the little boy who has come up with a bunch of beautiful tunes, crossed with the grown-up musician who's been digging in the blues archive. Great stuff.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

About Moby

What I don't like in his album is not the blues-oriented songs (they are good)
In fact I quite like Honey, Find my baby and Natural Blues.
It's just that the album is way too long, and there are so many fillers to my mind, useless tunes, soapy music.
Electro in general is not (apart from Portishead, Massive Attack, maybe Aphex Twin and other major artists) an album genre
Singles are great most of the time but some albums are filled with fillers
The Basement Jaxx album is a very good example of this.
For me, every song has to be good in an album. There's got to be cohesion.
The Flaming Lips album to me is a very good song (Race for the prize) surronded by lesser material

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

Nicolas, that's how I initially felt about "Play" too (I thought it was too long, I didn't hate it (far from it)).

But then, during a whole month or so, I woke up every morning to a reading from a book on the radio. And every morning a couple of the last songs from "Play" played in the background to the reading (most notably "Inside") and created a wonderful atmosphere. It's the best "wake-up calls" I've ever had, and since then "Play" is a huge favorite of mine.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

I acknowledge the word "hate" might be excessive.
In fact I listened to the album only once this month (I listened to a lot of albums from 1999 but for some of them it was some discovery listenings.
I'm not very familiar with 90's music (i am more fond of oldies, and I realize that in 99 I listened to a lot of other musics : jazz, world, french singers, and it shows in my lists) and this poll is interesting for me because I discovered a lot of good stuff (Outkast, Eminem, Lucinda Williams, but also good indie records like The Magnetic Fields. i can't say I love this kind of music but I found it very funny and musical.

I just found that among the 1999 albums Play was the one who got one of the worst marks.
It is not the worst though because I managed to listened to it all the way through which was not the case for all of them.
So I'll try to give it another listen but the fact is I just erased all the album (except the 3 songs mentionned) from my computer (i had borrowed it in the library)

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

on emore thing : it is really interesting to read every list
In fact this is what I find the most interesting.
The final list will only consist of indie rock, which is the favorite genre here in this thread. The result will be consensual.
I just deeply regret there is not more variety in your choices.
What's intersting is wthe hidden and less known names that you see in these lists.
I really invite everybody here to listen to Brad Mehldau's version of Exit Music, especially Mike Kelly who quoted the pianist.
I guess you won't be disappointed

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

Nicolas, I wish I had sought out Brad Mehldau's 1999 albums. I know his version of Exit Music on his Art of the Trio Volume 3, and like very much his other versions of Radiohead songs (though my favorite piece by him of all is his version of Martha My Dear, from Day is Done; have you heard it?). Anyway, I'll take your recommendation and seek out his Back at the Vanguard version.

I think Acclaimed Music is a great resource--thank you Henrik for it!--but I do regret, once we get to the Beatles era, that jazz is poorly represented. That of course is largely because of a shift of critical attention to being almost solely focused on rock and related popular music. I'm fairly new to this site and this forum (I discovered it about a half a year ago), and perhaps there have been some discussions that I've missed on how to incorporate jazz publications' year-end lists and so on. And perhaps such lists would be incommensurable with the more mainstream, rock and hip hop focused lists. I don't know. But, though I'm quite sincerely a huge fan of this site--and I get the sense Nicolas is, too-- I do share some of Nicolas's concerns.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1999

Gahh, I forgot about Don't Falter being on On The Ropes and being a '99. Missed a top ten vote from me there!

Good to see nothing from RHCP in either top ten.
