Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

I think a lot of the top 20 are overrated, but the only one I don't think is at least a good album is Sex Pistols.

Sex Pistols are a big example today of shock value trumping quality, which is a problem in just about all mediums of art. (It's pretty bad in music and visual art, but it's the absolute worst in comedy.)

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Never Mind The Bollocks is definitely a classic - kickass rockn'roll - if only albums of today could be this good...

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

"Sex Pistols are a big example today of shock value trumping quality"...

Actually, there's a way to correct for that. "Shock value" is very ephemeral; what was shocking in the UK in 1977 is much less so in the US in 2007. If an artist has NOTHING to say except look-at-me-I'm-so-naughty, then the music doesn't hold up. (After all, how many Alice Cooper fans do we have here?) The Pistols' music does hold up, thirty years later. I know not everyone here agrees, but I think Bollocks is a set of brilliant pop songs, performed with exuberant noise and mess. And I don't find it shocking at all.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Could someone explain to me what's so great about the White Album and how the HELL it's ahead of OK Computer here?

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Because there's like 30 songs on the album, something for everyone to like I guess. Personally I think it's got way too much filler.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Yeah that's what I thought, with all that filler - surely a 12 song or 10 song album is a lot more solid

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Bob Dylan-Blonde on Blonde
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
The Clash - London Calling
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Radiohead - OK Computer
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The Beatles - The Beatles ("The White Album")
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols

Although I must say, my ordering of these albums would differ day by day. I've tried far too many times to set a top 100 list in stone, but by the next week, I end up scrapping the list and starting back at square one. Oh well, hopefully I'll at least be able to get my act together for the 90's poll...

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

i don't like "Bollocks" that much
Apart from "Anarchy" and "God saves", 2 briliant rock songs, I think that listening to the whole album bores me : too much noise, and i don't like the way they're throwing up their songs.
I don't dig punk because i guess I prefer construction to destruction.
This "burn the bridges" apporach to music doesn't please me.
even if there are reasons to this album (I recnetly read a very funny review in Rock'n Folk about The song remains the same saying it was probably the worst live album later, and a possible reason why the Sex Pistols entred e recording studio in 1976-77)

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

That's interesting, nicolas...I've always thought of early punk more as deconstruction than destruction--stripping away a decade of increasingly elaborate, and sometimes ponderous, ornamentation, and returning to the musical simplicity of early rock 'n' roll (albeit played loudly and with cartoonish aggressiveness).

In fact, it was the roots-rock echoes of songs by the Ramones, the Clash, and X that got me seriously interested in pre-1960 music (the music for which you're the most consistent advocate here) in the first place.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

I’d have to put myself in the “Bollocks is overrated” camp (and am probably not surprising anyone here with that statement.)

Do I own it? Of course. Do I listen to it? Nope. Like nicolas said, I’m not sure how anyone could listen to that album in one sitting. I think its legacy is, for the most part, the result of originality combined with shock value. But the songs are just not that great.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Midaso , do you know that these songs Karma Police and Paranoid Android was influenced by White Album songs like Sexy Sadie and Happiness is A Warm Gun. Paranoid Android was based on Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Thom Yorke is a big fan of the White Album. Really I found it amusing how people say negative things about the Beatles then they found out the Beatles were a influence on their favorite bands including most of the major alt- rock bands. Remember Tomorrow Never Knows is considered by many the most groudbreaking song for modern music.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

You're continuously confusing groundbreaking and innovation with actual enjoyment of the music, which is a personal thing. You might enjoy The White Album, Midaso doesn't.

Btw, I don't like Radiohead either although I never connected this to the Beatles. Maybe though.. they're the source of all evil!

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

you are right schleuse, it is more deconstruction than destruction, although the Sex Pistols say literally "I wanna destroy"
I was thinking of the Sex pistols when I thought destruction
maybe deconstruction is more accurate
but it was a sort of "tabula rasa" (i don't know if you use that latin expression in English)
I mean the grass took a long time to grow again after them
what you say of the punks going back to the spirit of early rnr is very true and I share this view. I like the Clash very much, for instance, and I don't know about X who's not so popular in France as it is in America.
But 80 % of Nevermind pisses me off, i don't take any pleasure in its listening (except the 2 most popular songs). It's also true for the Ramones : on the first album, i like "Blitzkrieg pop" or "judy is a punk" or "i wanna be your boyfriend", they are built like 50's songs, but the rest doesn't please me that much; it's the sound of the guitars and the drums; same thing with "White blood cells" : it breaks my ears, like we say in French and it just gives me a headache;

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

In the previous post, I meant nevermind the bollocks" and I was not refering to the Nirvana album, which has its share of saturation but that I quite like.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Exactly Neo - at the end of the day it doesn't really matter how innovative something is - it matters how GOOD it is,how much you enjoy it,many things that were innovative in their day sound dated and terrible now...

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

What album in 1966-67 does not sound a little dated.
I have Aftermath, Blonde on Blonde and Fifth Dimension sound so dated compared to something like Taxman. You go play Tomorrow Never Knows to a kid full blasted, they would not know it was the Beatles. I have heard the song on some alternative rock stations. Revolution and Helter Skelter don't really sound dated. I also never understand the dated stuff excuse, something recorded in 1966 is going to sound dated. Ok no big deal, it would like someone trying to convince me why I should like Frank Zappa.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Neoptolemos
Because there's like 30 songs on the album, something for everyone to like I guess. Personally I think it's got way too much filler.

I agree that the amount of filler (or skipped) songs in an album has probative value in judging the merit of the album. But, if you start with 30 songs, you can tolerate a little filler. For me the songs I typically skip when listening the White Album include: Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9. The other songs are listenable to me. Therefore, I find the "filler" argument against the White Album far from dispositive.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

01. The Beatles- The Beatles (The White Album)
02. Bob Dylan- Blonde on Blonde
03. The Velvet Underground- Velvet Underground & Nico
04. The Rolling Stones- Exile on Main Street
05. The Beach Boys- Pet Sounds

15. Jimi Hendrix Experience- Electric Ladyland
16. Public Enemy- It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
17. Jimi Hendrix Experience- Are You Experienced?
18. Marvin Gaye- What's Going On (I always felt like this album was one idea hammered to death. Still has a few great songs though.)
19. Pink Floyd- Darkside of The Moon (a very corporate take on experimental rock. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is so much better.)
20. Sex Pistols- Never Mind the Bollocks

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Your description is the first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon as "corporate." Interesting take. Why?

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

I didn’t do this one the first time out, so here you go.

(Interesting that we’re still dealing with the same 20 albums.)

1. London Calling
2. Revolver
3. OK Computer
4. The Velvet Underground & Nico
5. Highway 61 Revisited
6. Nevermind
7. Ziggy Stardust
8. Exile on Main St.
9. Pet Sounds
10. It Takes a Nation of Millions
11. Sgt. Pepper
12. Blonde on Blonde
13. Are You Experienced
14. Never Mind the Bollocks
15. Horses
16. Dark Side of the Moon
17. Astral Weeks
18. The White Album
19. Born to Run
20. What’s Going On

#1-6 would make my personal top 20. #16-20 would not make my top 100.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

It appears that you added Horses to the top 20 and deleted Electric Ladyland. This is somewhat curious

3. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?

5. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

18. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

19. The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols
20. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

That makes sense. I don't think that I would place the Horses album any higher than 15 on my list.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

From the ones I've heard:

LOVE'EM!:
1) The Beatles - The Beatles ("The White Album")
2) Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

Perfect albums, but not ones I come to so often:
3) The Beatles - Revolver
4) Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Nice ones, gratifying auditions:
5) Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
6) Radiohead - OK Computer
7) The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
8) The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

Good, but I'm always lazy to listen to them:
9) The Clash - London Calling
10) The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
11) Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
12) The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Weak:
13) Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Maybe I need to listen to them more times:
14) Nirvana - Nevermind
15) Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

HATE IT!
16) David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Henry
Your description is the first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon as "corporate." Interesting take. Why?

It's the slick arena rock version of psychedelic music to me. I don't think it's a BAD album, but it's not in my top 100.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Thanks for clarifying your position. The album is definitely slick. I don't find this characteristic objectionable and see a small correlation with such slickness and "corporateness." When I think of "corporate" rock, I think of Journey and Toto and others who cater to their labels to improve their contracts; or other like Christopher Cross who are wildly successful with a single foray and then stumble for the rest of their career. In my view, neither of these scenarios was in play with Dark Side of the Moon. But, certainly other "corporate" scenarios can be postulated. For example, according to wikipedia - "Much of the album's early State-side success is attributed to the efforts of Pink Floyd's US record company, Capitol Records." This sort of treatment by the record label could indicate that your "corporate" tag is reasonably founded. Nonetheless, almost four decades later Dark Side of the Moon remains one of my top five and I don't see that changing anytime soon Viva la difference - and to each their own.

Re: Re-order the top 20 albums

Since we dug these threads up, and I wasn't a member when they were started, I would particpate.

1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
3. The Beatles - Revolver
4. Radiohead - OK Computer
5. The Clash - London Calling
6. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
7. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
8. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
9. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
10. Nirvana - Nevermind
11. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
12. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
13. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.
14. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
15. Public Enemy - It takes a Nation of Millions
16. The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album)
17. Patti Smith - Horses
18. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
19. The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
20. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

If Electric Ladyland was permitted, it would be in the 3rd position. Those t13 albums are all in my T20, but after that there's a bit of a drop.
