OK, I promised a reward, and here it is (a little early, even).

You know those songs and artists you can’t believe aren’t in the tournament anymore?

Well, no, I can’t bring them back, but hey, there’s no reason YOU have to abandon them.

What I’m going to do on this thread is to list the songs picked by each voter ranked in the top 20—everybody gets his or her own top 64 (or however many you voted for). Sweet memories for each of us (if anyone else wants their results, I'll gladly look them up).

Apart from just seeing how everyone did, the cool thing you can do with this is to run your own tournament on the side (I’m going to). You want to advance “Subterranean Homesick Blues” or “That’ll Be the Day” to your Sweet 16? Go right ahead. Each week’s winners make one bracket in the second round.

(If you missed any weeks, it should be pretty easy to find the brackets on the Bracketology Central thread and reconstruct how you would have voted, but that’s your lookout.)

I’m not going to do this after each round, but if you care to run your own tournament, it should be pretty simple to take it from here. And if you do, I hope you’ll keep everyone updated on your personal results (and if you don’t, I hope you enjoy this anyway).

Awesome! I'm just not sure I understand. Are we supposed to take this away, run our own bracketology and then post what we came up with?

Hmmm. Good question, jonmarck.

The intent is that you can do whatever you like with it. I'll tell you what I'm gonna do: I'm going to run my own tourney concurrently with the "real" one. So, this week I'll vote on the four brackets that came out of weeks 1-4 in both, then I'll do the next four next week, and so on. I'll mention any differences between the real deal and my own picks somewhere--probably on my own ballot.

I suppose if anybody wanted to blow through the whole thing in a few minutes and crown their own champion, they could, but that would take a lot of the fun out of it for me--as we all know, the choices get a lot harder in later rounds (especially for one's own picks, I imagine) and I'd be uncomfortable rushing it. Plus, I listen to all the songs before voting on them, so that takes some time.

That's just my suggestion, though--and, of course, nobody is required to run their own tourney at all. You can do anything you want with your list: ignore it, use it as a playlist (maybe a set list in your case...don't know if you cover songs), whatever.

However, let me add one thing: I guess I'd prefer it if we didn't all post our Final Fours ahead of time--seems like it might take some of the steam out. I mean, I actually LIKE that I have no idea what's going to win bracketology, and I would like to maintain the suspense as long as possible (even if it's only another six or seven weeks).

(I appreciate that your question made me think that out, btw--I was so focused yesterday on the relatively brainless activity of compiling lists that I didn't consider how this would work in practice.)

schleuse, I like your suggestion of taking your time and first listen to the songs before voting. I used to do that too for the "best albums and songs of the 90s poll". Makes it more fun too!

Although newcomer to this game and not having voted in the first round, it seems interesting to redo the first round for myself all the way up to the Fab Four and see what comes out by the end of the year. Cool, hope to be able to find all that quality listening time ...

I couldn't put my finger on it then, but looking back over things I realize that the exercise has really helped me to think critically (in a good way) about the music I listen to. It has been a blast and I can't wait for the second round to begin.

Schwah, your comment about week one has inspred me to finally reveal a behind-the-scenes dirty secret of bracketology: I could have organized the schedule to start with virtually any week; I chose Week 1 partly because I thought the choices were particularly varied and enticing, and I was trying to lure voters. Now you know.

I just a ran a tournament based on my picks and ran across a serious dilemma. By the semi-finals I was finding it harder and harder to eliminate songs and I couldn't even complete the final round.
