Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

Heck, I might as well give Bob Mould some points.

Could you add Bob Mould's Last Dog and Pony Show to the end of my list.

I also really like the song from that album First Drag of the Day, but I can be happy with it at my #21 without getting any points.

BEST COMPILATION: VARIOUS “The Look of Love: The Burt Bacharach Collection” (#90 in my all-time list)

My favorite Spanish song of 1998: Los Planetas' "Segundo premio"

Los Planetas (“The Planets”) are the most important band coming from the 90s Spanish indie-rock scene. But while legions of bands sang in English and showed strong influences of Pixies, Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine in an often too obvious way, Los Planetas were a band with a more personal approach, with a sound of its own. A simple but effective sound based on a densely intertwined wall of guitars of Florent and J. (Television-style) on the front and the dreamy vocals of J. buried in the mix. The change of members in the band rhythm section in 1998 added an extra power to the overall sound, with the Scottish bass player Kieran Stephen and the terrific drummer Erik Jiménez (coming from Lagartija Nick and having shown his mastery in Enrique Morente’s masterpiece “Omega”).
After two previous successful albums (in Spanish indie standards) Los Planetas affronted ambitiously his third album, “Una semana en el motor de un autobús” (“A Week in the Motor of a Bus”), recording it at NYC (Zabriskie Point) with Kurt Ralske (Ultra Vivid Scene) on production. The album relied in a loose concept about a boy that immerses himself in a week of chemical excesses after a loving disappointment, realizing that the solution in inside him. The story worked quiet well but the individual songs also worked wonderfully without the story behind, reflecting quite imaginatively the drug effects (cocaine in “Cumpleaños total” “Total Birthday” or hallucinogens in “Toxicosmos”).
I’ve selected the album opener, “Segundo Premio” (“Second Prize”), Los Planetas speciality of the house, raw songs of hate à la “Idiot Wind”. This brilliant song is build around a powerful drum beat, the usual wall of guitars and an imaginative string arrangement, emerging from the noisy backing an angry vocal deliverance by J.
Joan Pons for Rockdelux: “J. turns difficult into easy: he finds the simplest way to explain the most complicated emotions. It’s almost impossible not to reflect yourself in lyrics that appeals directly to the feelings of a twenty-something generation that accumulates records, nightly experiences and loving misfortunes. A whole that makes this album an extraordinary assay about the abstinence, about the withdrawal symptoms: the anxiety of living without a lover, of living without drugs. Of living, summarizing, without the strong sensations that got lost after the adolescence”.

SEGUNDO PREMIO
Composer: J.
Performers: LOS PLANETAS

SECOND PRIZE

Sitting, waiting for your call
praying for a sign from you,
days are getting slower
and the only thing I can do is waiting
for you to say that it’s all over
to say that you don’t want to see me anymore,
it’s impossible that you’ve forgotten
the things we could do together.

And if all the things that happened
are about to happen again,
and if all has been in vain
you don’t have to come back.

Looking at the walls of this room,
praying for your comeback,
and all the things we talked about
are the things we’re going to lose.
If I never wanted to be the only one by your side,
if I was afraid it was for ending like that.
And all the time I wasted
comes back against me.

And if this can hurt you,
if I can make you suffer,
this has been useful for something
at least for me.

Muchas gracias Honorio for these translations !
Great idea !

Henrik, I'd like to ask you : why not going on after november with our favorite albums of the 2000's (and why not, after 2007, going back to the sixties, let's say 1965 ?)

P.S.:

Slight oversight; I'd like to substitute Gomez's "Get Miles" for the similarly titled "Get Myself Arrested", if possible. Not that I suppose it'll make any difference, being as I'm the only one to nominate either song.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

...and here are the albums and songs from 1998 that will be included in the best of the 90s poll in November:

Albums
1. Massive Attack - Mezzanine
2. Air - Moon Safari
3. Elliott Smith - XO
4. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Under the Sea
5. Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
6. Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
7. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of...
8. Pulp - This Is Hardcore
9. Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty
10. Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children

Songs
1. Pulp - This Is Hardcore
2. Massive Attack - Teardrop
3. Elliott Smith - Waltz #2
4. Stardust - Music Sounds Better with You
5. New Radicals - You Get What You Give
6. Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
7. Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
8. Beck - Nobody's Fault But My Own
9. Mercury Rev - Goddess on a Highway
10. Air - Sexy Boy

For the first time, an AM no. 1 song didn't make the top 10. Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Skank" reached place 13, only 7 points behind "Sexy Boy". In addition, "Praise You" was no. 12, only 2 points outside the top 10, so Norman Cook had no luck at all.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

The big surprise to me in this round is that #3 ranking for Elliot Smith. I'm really please to see so many people know and like that album as much as I do. It was certainly a well-reviewed and generally admired album at the time, but I never would have guessed it was going to be rated so highly here. I guess it's what you'd call a sleeper record.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

No way.. the best live album of all time didn't make it? Shame.

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

i'm happy too that Elliott Smith made it, especially because I underrated him a bit (I listened to it in my car this summer on a rainy day and an unknown country road in the Southwest of France with my wife and daughter speaking around me, which didn't help

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

No Beta Band

Re: Forum poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1998

I'm happy, and a little surprised, to see all the love for "This is Hardcore" - both the song and the album. Some of the best and darkest music released in the 90s. Even Scott Walker was floored.
All the votes for "You get what you give" also surprised me. An alternative pop gem if there ever was one.
