2) The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
3) Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
4) Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
5) The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
6) Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

9) David Bowie - Life On Mars?
10) Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
11) The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
12) Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The U.K.
13) Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
14) Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

Either Buddy Holly and Little Richard dropped 5 spots during the last update, or I have no idea what just happened here..

Anyway, I agree with schleuse that songs > albums.. so here goes, quite a few obvious choices I guess:

1 The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
2 The Rolling Stones - Angie
3 Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
4 Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
5 The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
6 Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
7 Prince - Sometimes It Snows In April
8 David Bowie - Heroes
9 Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
10 Aretha Franklin - Respect
11 The Who - Baba O'Riley
12 Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen
13 Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
14 Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
15 James Brown - It's a Man's Man's Man's World
16 The Clash - London Calling
17 Nirvana - Plateau
18 U2 - One
19 The Kinks - You Really Got Me
20 Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
21 Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary
22 Madonna - Vogue
23 R.E.M. - Bad Day
24 Ray Charles - What'd I Say
25 Michael Jackson - Earth Song

Gotta say I like this top 25 more than the old one.

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

Hmm...hadn't even looked at the new list, but for the two newcomers, I'd say

Ray Charles: I've Got a Woman
Michael Jackson: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

And, sorry, Pomtidom, but I preferred the old list: it's nice to have Brother Ray in there, but Buddy Holly and Little Richard are gods.

(btw, you do realize that "Bad Day" is a recycled version of "It's the End of the World As We Know It," right? not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

how embarrassing...I posted a list twice. I had done a list, declared myself dissatisfied with it and put it aside to revise it. Apparently I must have posted my original list instead of only previewing it.

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

Wow, schleuse, you're right - "Bad Day" is just a re-written "It's The End Of The World...". It's funny; there was always something about that song that I could never quite put my finger on. Guess that's it.

Hmmm, never thought I'd say this, but I think I just lost some respect for R.E.M. And as a fan (albeit not a huge one), it sort of hurts to say that. It's one thing to rip off another band, but it's an entirely different thing to rip off yourself.

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

Hm.. I did not realise that, and after listening.. you're right. Doesn't change my opinion though, I like Bad Day.

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

You know, I went back and read what Peter Buck actually wrote about the song, and I was not entirely correct. "Bad Day" was a song written around 1987; it was scrapped but rearranged into "End of the World." Then, a few years ago, Stipe wrote some new lyrics and they re-recorded it and released it on their Warner Bros. greatest hits (a demo, I think, of the original version is on their IRS greatest hits if anyone cares to compare).

Many acts recycle riffs and even whole songs, and it doesn't bother me that Muddy Waters or the Ramones or even Britney Spears have songs which are essentially identical.

I still yield to nobody in my admiration for R.E.M.--my favorite band since 1986.

Re: Favorite songs by the top 25 artists

Well, it sure bothers me.

If I may go back to the whole “music as art” idea, it’s troubling when any artist duplicates something they’ve done before, regardless of the extent. That’s the very idea of art – to be inspired and to create something new and fresh – original.

That’s why I’m such a huge admirer of Miles Davis. He understood his responsibility as an artist to push the boundaries, creatively. He never looked backward (so to speak); he was always trying to create something new and different from what he had done before. Radiohead would be a modern-day example of such artistry.

I’ll still listen to R.E.M., and my enjoyment of an album like Automatic For The People probably won’t be tarnished, but I’ll think twice about listening to “Bad Day”again.
