Favorite Compilation of 1993: ABBA “Abba Gold. Greatest Hits”

Fermín Muguruza is the main figure of “rock radical vasco” (Basque radical rock) in his successive incarnations as the front-man of Kortatu and Negu Gorriak and as a solo artist. His incorruptible and combative attitude had gained him numerous problems as legal accusations and concert cancellations. And his strong political convictions (aligned with left-wing Basque nationalism favourable to Basque Country independence from Spain and related with terrorist organization ETA) had taken away the focus from the music and had alienated some possible listeners.
“Borreroak baditu milaka aurpegi” (“The Executioner Is the Man of the Thousand Faces”) was the third album of Negu Gorriak (“Harsh Winters”) and it’s considered by many its masterpiece. It’s a double album filled with “combat rock” songs, deeply rooted on punk, hardcore and hip-hop but displaying a wide range of styles including ska, soul, reggae and even latin. Echoes of The Clash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Public Enemy, Rollins Band or Fugazi can be heard through the record. “Bi Doberman beltz” (“Two Black Doberman”) is the album opener and sets the scene immediately with its raging mixture of hardcore and hip-hop.
Some words from Xavier Cervantes in Rockdelux 166 about “Borreroak…”: “Very few records have the emotional depth of Negu Gorriak’s black album. Beyond the political connection, here they go deeply in painful feelings. When hope is lost, you realize that organizing the hate supposes a high price you must pay to continue resisting. (…) As in the second album of Kortatu, impotence is burning in his blood, but now the desperation takes him to the darkness, to a self-destructive violence generated by a sick, cynical and hypocrite society”.
